Its call Detonation, Its either a problem with Ign Timing or Tune or Both.
What are you using for a tune

im using a stock ecu...i did my hg myself but I am not a mechanic... during the process of trying to start my car after the hg my exhaust cam broke...what are my options? is this piston no good? the car started fine but did not run very well...the timing seemed to be fine...

so you did the H/G swap then broke the cam and pulled the head again?
Your Cam probably snapped due to incorrect installation of the Cam Journals.
they have to go in a certain order or direction or the cam will bind. Caps are not all the same

I had the same exact thing happen except my motor was a completely unmolested untouched stock sr20det. But when I pulled the head there was a bunch of little dings in the side .
not trying to thread jack but what are my options here?
my piston looks almost exactly the same. but again it is all stock.

Replace the piston with a stock one. Determine what caused the lean condition in the first place. I'd suspect the injector if the other cylinders were okay.
