Ok ive got 2 12" inch flex-a-lite fans on my car. To power them ive got them wired right to the battery (didnt know where else) then ive got a switch on the power wire i use to turn them on.

For some reason, whenever i turn the fans on for 5+ minutes, the switch and connectors gets HOT AS HELL. Im on my 4th switch...i the first one i figured was a defect, so i got another of the same type..that one blew too so i got a differently designed one, finally that one blew so i just bought another one.

Doing this means i can only use my fans at stop lights, which seems safe to me...

Weird thing is, ive got a 25 amp fuse on the line and the fans are rated for 25 amps...so i dunno why the fuse isnt blowing instead of the switch. Also i blew one 25A switch while using a 20amp fuse.

do you have a diagram of how you wired it? What size wires did you use? What style switch is it also?

Sounds like too much power going through the wires. Electricity will heat up wires, and if it's too much, they will burn.

Solutions:

1) Switch to thicker power wiring and a switch designed to handle it
2) Set up a relay with thicker wiring going through the relay to the fans and your current wiring and switch to activate the relay.
3) Switch to thicker power wiring and a thermostat.

run at least a 40AMP relay with some thicker wire to the fans. then you don't have 25 amps getting pulled through your wiring/switch. if it gets hot at all then it's a rolling fire hazard. the relay isolates the high amp draw devices and shortens the path for the power to flow to them. basically to run a relay you have power into your switch (switched 12v or constant 12v depending on if you want to be able to run the fans with the ignition off), wire from your switch to the relay, a relay ground, and then power in/out of the relay.

it's very basic wiring so you should be able to figure it out. a relay just a remote switch more or less.

Heh, good luck finding a 40amp switch. 25 is as high as i could find, they had ONe 30 amp but it was the size of a dildo.

the problem with the relay idea is that i dont want it to shut itself off as im at a stoplight :/

diagram would be simple, one ground wire from fans to chassis, other wire from battery right to switch, right to fuse, right to fans, theres one break in the wire by the battery where i had to cut it, i dont see how that could hurt (i re-hooked it up with a male-female connector).

All the heat originates from the switch. The wire did get a little chewed up when it got pinched under the clutch pedal a few times...that might be causing some trouble.. I guess ill cut that section out tomorrow.

you only need a tiny little siwtch. you need a 40 amp RELAY, not a 40 amp switch.
I don't know what you are talkinga bout with a relay turning the fans off at stop lights. I don't think you know what you are talking about either.
I'm talking about a RELAY.
its a switch controlled by a switch, so that you can mount a small switch with 18 gauge wire in your dash and use that switch to remotely turn on and off a relay, which is the remote mounted piece that handles all the real current.
And you can find 40 amp relays all day at your local radio shack if no where else.

Thanks, its too bad radio shack hires fucking monkeys to do the job there, or id have had this figured out weeks ago.
