[B]anyone ever try this? removing the suede looking inserts on the inner door panels? Are they glued on or clipped on, or is there any way to remove them somehow? I want to upholster over them in grey leather to match my seats.

I was just going to post the same thing, I just got done installing my s14 seats and seatbelts and want to get rid of the nasty fabric on the door panels.

Aubrey did a writup for the seat stuff and had a quick note on what he did with the door inserts. Take a look at the URL below.

I guess you can slowly pull the tweed or suade off and it will reveal a thin viynl. I want to see better pictures of what it actually looks like before I go ahead and do this. So if anyone has pics PLEASE POST THEM! :)

I've got the same suede / fake suede. .whatever it is. . on the door inserts in my S14. .
wouldn't mind recovering in normal tan leather, to match the seats.

A lot of people have removed the fabric from their door planels. I think it's glued on but you can rip it off pretty easily. Supposedly it's black vinyl underneath and looks pretty good.

If your not sure what to do, you may want to find a door planel from a junk yard and experiment.

Best wishes,
Matt

thats probably best, I dont want to screw up the door, although that suede is nasty and I found some nice grey leather that matches the seats..I want to stitch 240SX into them and put them in the door.

I went ahead and took mine off today. Finished installing the rear s14 seats and figured if it looked bad after I took it off I could just get some better fabric for it.

I might get some time tonight to download some pictures. I will post them whenever I download them.

It came off really easy, without heat. I took about 5 min to get the passenger side off, the driver side I ripped off in 1 min. Not hard to do at all. As for the results, I think it looks really good, its the same vinyl as the rest of the doors. Id recommend everyone do this, tweed sux.

I only have pics of it without any cleaning. Im curious to what other people have done to get some of the adhesive off? Im thinking goo gone, but dont want to damange anything. Any suggestions would help :)

Hondaholic: Did you remove the Glove box tweed as well? It dosent look like it will come off as nice.

west, is the material set in a certain shape, and stiff when you remove it? or is it just like cloth glued into that space? I need to make a mold from the peice i remove.....i hope my leather isnt too thick.

Hey West,

I was actually thinking of doing this and Goo-Gone'ing it this Thanksgiving. I am converting my interior to be black. My door panels and glove are blue which was what my car came in, so what I do to these I do not care.

I will let you know if you wanna wait hopefully during the middle of Thursday. Other than that I am sure you can do the inconspicuous test to see if the Goo Gone is too strong.

It is a certian shape, I will post pictures of it. Its flexible without a doubt. However I would have to say leather in freezeing weather would be the same as the tweed I removed. You can make a Mold without a problem, its what I was going to do if I didnt like the results of pulling the suade off.

Irena said she knew someone who had a 92 or something (not sure) and they took theirs off and it was nasty looking yellow. Maybe from them taking it off wrong. Even though I took mine off real fast. I saw the vinyl did stetch but I didnt feel it would have been harmed if I was wreckless.

I highly doubt the Goo Gone could harm anything since its vinyl, like the rest of the door. I will try cleaning it with whatever stuff I have in my garage (viynlex, not a cleaner) and see what the results are.

Anyways, id still like to know how goo gone works. So let us know, I feel Paint thiner would be ok without doing any damage... Irena thinks the Goo Gone would harm it :coolugh: So let us know what you find please.

I will post pics with before and after pics of after removal and after cleaning with a harsh cleaner.

The goo-gone should work fine. I did the exact same thing on my wrx. I ripped the fabric off and there was vinyl underneath. There was also a lot of adhesive stuck there. I used the goo-gone to remove all the adhesive and everything looked really nice and clean. I'm going to try and do this on my s14 this weekend.

West, what I did was rip the tweed of the glovebox. After doing that it left this yellow foam residue. So I took a harsh cleaner, goo gone, and scrubbed all the foam off. Then I sanded it down and painted it with black trim spray. It looks really good and the black theme flows much better with that tweed gone.

im still not clear on a few things, if you have time could you let me know...

- if i put the leather material over the old inserts and glued them back on would it work or can the material only be so thick? (like how much room is there to play with...its just glued on right?)

-how do you get the holy shit handle and pw switch thinghy off, or do you need to (do you just pull it off over these plastic parts?)

thanks...i cant wait to see what it will look like, i have a grey leather shift boot, e-brake boot is on the way, and the door panels stitched with 240SX or the nissan logo or something

ill post pics too

1. You can put leather or whatever you want back on with some 3M adheasive, not sure what kind. All you would need to do is stretch the material back on and cut out the holes wherever needed. The outside will tuck a bit into the door. So you can just cut it out once its tucked in there.

2. Just look at it, 1 screw on the oh shit handle. 1 screw holding the switch panels on. Just need screwdrivers.

Okay, I think that godawful VLSD sticker is pointless, I was curious twitchy how much HP did that add to your car. Looks like a lot to me. I am not trying to be a jerk, but that sig is so pointless its like just a big ad for something stupid in my opinion. I also think that west explained everything quite well and if you have questions you should go to a junkyard and find a panel and experiment or just lift up your skirt and mess around with your own door. These are my opinions, and I don't mean to cause a fight or anything. Peace

okay then thanks for nothing

Im going to start a thread called "leave your opinions on my sticker" in the chat area and hope there might be more relevant information left in this one. I like the sticker. Other people i know like the sticker. So i dont care what some people on the internet think of it. I appreciate criticism in a constructive sense but this has been covered a million times.

wow, this thread went from being informitive to bashing someone...

since all of you would rather bash someone, id apprecieate it if any of you could answer my question and putforth 1/8th the effort into the question...

i dont get it, why do all topics turn into off topic, and then into bashing someone...if you dont like something, then who the fuck cares...im pretty sure there are tons of things that i have seen that i dont like at all, but do you see me being a post whore in saying that shits nasty or something all the time? is all of this just turning into a post whore competition? i enjoy getting more info from the forum, but im sick and tired of bullshit like this...

So to try and get back on-topic...does anyone know if this holds true in regards to the S14 door panels as well? I hate the damn pattern it has and it takes away from the "all black" theme I'm going for in the interior....

Anyone tried it yet on thier S14??

Id do it in 2 seconds but I always have trouble trying to get off the plastic panels (around the lock, door handle, etc)

truthfully there have been 2 or 3 times ive tried to remove them and I have never been able to. Dont know how much they can take without snapping and I dont want that!
