Hey,

OK, before you guys come at me with pitchforks, I have been searching the forums about removing the upper timing chain guide.

I see there is a "how to" right here:

Fix Your 240sx Timing Chain Rattle (http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/fix-your-timing-chain-rattle.html)

Now, I want to change my valve cover gasket and alot of the posts I am seeing say go ahead and just remove your upper guide while you are changing your valve cover gasket. Ok, so does that mean I don't have to do the beginning part of that write up? They say it takes only 10 minutes to do (taking off the cover gasket and installing a new one) and I am assuming they don't include the part about the TDC stroke in that write up.

So, my question is, can I just open the hood of my car and remove the spark plug wires, undo the valve cover, change gasket, and just remove the two bolts holding that tensioner on, remove the tensioner, put the gasket on and be done with it? Thanks.

Yes it is that simple. Pull the plug wires. Take off the valve cover, unbolt the tensioner, change gasket, and put everything back on.

Ok. So I guess that guide that I listed above just allowed you to remove the second guide as well right? Can I just leave the second guide there right?

Thanks.

No, it's not that simple. Remove the front cover and remove the second guide that is inside. Clean the cover and use grey gasket maker, use a nice clean bead, too much is not good.
Don't be lazy to remove the 2nd guide, I see many people pulling the top one only. You do this for a reason, as stated by Nissan if the plastics break they will cause engine damage, and they do break over period time. So remove the 2 guides and be done with it.
If people do it it half way like waxball does, then there's really no point in doing it at all, because you still have another guide that could break apart and cause damage.

Thanks for asking the same question as I was just wondering the same thing myself.
I actually lost both upper guides, so I win!

also download a FSM from www.240SXTECHDVDS.org Home Page (http://www.240sxtechdvds.org) and look up timing in 'engine mechanical'. Its all there on how to do your timing if you take out your dizzy and remove the 2nd guide.

question Being I'm building my engine ground up, is there anything besides timing guides, and the o-ring that is attached to the block intake side that needs to be attached before placing the lower timing cover on? I mean besides the obvious oil pump and items that I left attached to the lower timing cover?

(sorry for thread jacking btw)
