Hey guys,

I bought my 14 without a sound system lol, the previous owner took the deck out of it before the sale. I was wondering if anyone could help me put a cost effective sound system together....I'm clueless. I honestly think a stock S2000 sound system is like gods gift to man lol, so I'm not really looking for anything fancy. No subs either. I was thinking just a pair of hybrid audio imagines + amp + headunit? I have the speakers already...trying to keep the rest under 4-500$. If anyone could help, that'd be great!

few months ago i completely redid sound system in my s14. here's the parts list:

Hifonics Zeus ZXi80.4 (4 channel amp, 80W RMS / channel)
Sony MEX-BT3900U (headunit w/ cd, am/fm, aux, bluetooth phone & a2dp)
Alpine SPS-600 speakers x 4 (80W RMS)
20' 6-channel RCA snake (fronts, rears, & subs)
8AWG power wire 23'x2 (battery-to-amp, twisted pair)
12AWG power wire 18'x2 (amp-to-headunit, twisted pair)
16AWG speaker wires, 18'x4 & 2'x4 (amp-to-fronts & amp-to-rears, twisted pairs)
30A fuse in engine bay

total cost was $525 (shipping included) and labor was free since i did all myself. the sound system sounds MINT! both highs and mids are perfect and bass isn't too shabby either. tho since i listen to mostly electronic music at ear-bleeding volumes i plan to invest in a 12" x 2 subs + box to handle the massive basslines without ripping apart the current Alpines =D

for the money i spend the quality and power are unmatched. i'm also a dj so sound quality matters A LOT to me and so far i'm VERY happy with the system :D

ps: i ran all power cables on the driver's side and since my near-stock s14 had 0 wires on the passenger side i ran the RCA cables there. that + twisted pairs are why my sound system sounds great and is 100% noise/static free, even with headunit being ungrounded :coolugh:

I guess a generic headunit would work(pioneer, etc), but not many people are running the imagines in their car....was wondering whats a budget decent amp that will work with these speakers....

Since when is Pioneer considered a "generic" head unit? Yeah its not a premium brand unless you go to their Elite and Premier lines, but its nowhere near generic.

If you are really on a budget, then you could do the new Hybrid Mirius. They are almost half the price of the Imagines. However, if you are wanting to run an amplifier to them, then I would recommend staying with the Imagines or better. And of course I can't possibly recommend anything but Hybrids. NOTHING can touch them for the money. Hell, nothing can touch them for more money. As for amplifiers, I have not come across anything better than the ARC XDi's for the money. They are also a REALLY small chassis amplifier to boot! I have done dozens of these things in the last couple months and am floored with the sound quality and overall performance. Keep in mind, I have been doing this for 20 years and have sold pretty much every high-end brand under the sun... these are the real deal. As for head units I prefer the Alpine units. The CDE-121 is around $99, so nothing really competes with that with the same quality and features. Send me a PM if you need some pricing on gear. Also, I offer additional discounts for multi-item purchases.

To answer your question OP I would just buy a decent deck and amp. Pioneer, Alpine, etc, anything off the shelf from your local Best Buy will sound great as long as you dont cheap out completely. If you are not wanting a sub....get some of the 6x9 or 5x7 adapter plate inserts for your doors and rear panels so you will have some adequate bass. Just my opinion....as well as what Broadfield says. He knows what he is talking about!
