hey guys my goal this winter is to get together a turbo setup for my dual cam KA
here are my plans
thunderbird t3
1g DSM sidemount
Cartech fmu
1g dsm bov
homemade mani
homemade charge pipes
home made down pipe
id like to describe possible setups, possible HP numbers etc, what other turbo options there are and as you can tell this is a really low budget setup, lets hear ur 2 cents

Why does everyone want to keep using those T-Bird T3's? The nissan ones are good for 15psi and efficiently to 10psi intercooled. They have a .60 compressor and can be found on tons of nissans 84-86 300zx turbo- 80-82 280zx turbo. Or go on Zcar.com there are tons of people selling them on there. Good Luck!

I so stupid! I am sorry that I said .60 compressor....because that is incorrect LOL! Anyway I looked at my NISSAN T3 and it doesnt say .60 but my T3/T4 does hehe, the NISSAN one is a better turbo still in my opinion. My friend has a turbo coupe and it has eaten many junkyard turbos! My friend Turbo Tommy has a Junkyard NISSAN T3 on his sand rail SR20 pushing 12psi and hasnt had to rebuild it yet. Again sorry for the confusion....too many BONG hits earlier...T3/T4 NISSAN T3 they all look the same LOL!

Z31 T3, mark III ct26, Tbired T3 (avoid IHI, 87&88), pot luck tiny T3'd volvos from the past couple decades.
everyonce in a while you get lucky, I found a mark III supra that was modified in florida with what looked like a T04E or larger single turbo on it. It had caught fire, and I passed it over.

man i hate the junkyard. i just got back from there and i found many turbos. the problem is i cant get any of them off! i found one from a s12 ca18et, i couldnt get 1 damn nut off so i gave up after and hour. moved onto a z31 and haggled with that for 30minutes and gave up. found a turbo saab that was halfway removed, the last bolt is impossible to get off. then there was a turbo subaru i just looked at it then walked away. im not mechanically declined or anything but fuck there was no kinda room on any of those cars. if you go there be prepared. just drop the motor and make everything 100x easier.

I think the Mk3 CT26 is the best of the junk yard turbos. Not sure what kind of flange it has though.
Ford ones are okay, but you need to make sure you get the right one (not ihi) preferably .63 a/r exhaust and 60 trim compressor.

damn blue240sx..you're weak..or you need WD-40 and a breaker bar.
i dont have that prob. i either break the bolt/nut or bust out some WD-40 on it and wait.
andrave: what is wrong with those turbos?? prone to blowing??

what turbos?
the ihi's?
they just suck..
they are small, not so reliable, and ... not so efficient.

Guys on the mr2 board ( http://board.mr2faq.com/ ) sometimes sell their CT26's for around $100 (there is one guy selling for $40)
or you can try Xcars.com

don't worry about it, its common knowledge that pulling off turbos sucks ass.
they have been on there for a decade or more, for 100,000 miles, getting all hot and rusty.
lol
they don't come off easy.
might wanna bring a can of PB blaster and soak the fuckers in it the night before you are gonna pull em.

andrave: you just mean those 2 right?? not IHI as a whole cuz i know the ones apex puts out are pretty efficient and nice

I'm talking specifically about the IHI's off the T birds (and hell most of the IHI's you might find in a junkyard).
their aftermarket shit is pretty good, apparently, though I have no experience with it.

No! Yet again I ask why the CT26? You would have better look sourcing a used diesel turbocharger from your local "big rig" wrecking yards like FMI. Than getting a CT26 to last and bolt up, they use that round opening. Not good for further horspower development. If you go with something that has a T3 flange it will work perfect. Someone on here mentioned a TURBO volvo, that is an excellent choice and quite prevelant! The unfortunate part is almost always in my experience the turbos have excessive play in the shaft. Like I said I would have to say NO! on the CT26, the TOYOTA boys dont even like em. If your really looking for a good Junkyard TURBO look at finding the earliest year of turbo 2 RX-7's. These things have a really close flange to the T3, the later models had kind of a weird design but could be adapted with some drilling mods!

Also those RX-7 turbos are good (supossedly) to 22psi intercooled efficiently and feature a ball bearing center cartridge!

about the diesel turbo wouldent the exhaust side be a monster and about the turbo2 FC. any specs on this turbo i have a feeling its really small

Most big rigs dont run a turbo larger than a to4, sure the flange is bigger but its real easy to weld on or bolt on one for a to4 to the t3 flange. Im mostly talking about Izuzu NPR's and Nissan Dieselwork rigs, nothing to huge there. The FC turbo is not small, after all its on a rotary. Why would you put a small turbo on a rotary? You would create more heat than power! It is realtively the same size as a T3 turbocharger but has so many features that the T3 does not. I didnt say this was a direct bolt on but I wouldnt mind attempting it.

yeah but diesel turbos run gigantic turbine housings with relatively small compressor housings, compared to smaller turbine housings and larger compressors that most of the import turbos use...
(t3/t4 hybrid, t28/t3 hybrid, etc).

andrave got what i was sayimg, the compressor might be a good size for the ka but will the KA have trouble turning the turbine side of something made for a truck, anyone have some specs on the turbo2 turbo?

Ok I am not saying that Diesel turbos are the best choice! I am just listing options that I know of. Last time I looked under the hood of a big diesel rig, was about four months ago, it had a monstrous straight six and a TO4 that had the same size turbine housing on that of a Cummins Turbo Diesel. It looked like the same To4's you see on E-bay all day long. A to4 would probably be too large for your stock application, all I am saying is you should probably stick with something that has a t3 flange or similar. The reason I say this is for further horsepower development later down the road when you want to upgrade your turbocharger. Basically just stick with a Volvo T3, they are the most prevelant and easiest to get too. I am unsure of compressor maps and things such as that for the RX-7 Hitachi turbo but, I do know it would spool hella fast do to its unique turbine housing. Search for a pic on E-bay if your unsure about it. Anyway, good luck dude!

This guy didnt take the best photo but at least you can see what I am talking about far as the flange and the size of the unit being close to that of a T3. Not a bad price on this unit either!

They have a couple of good pics on the forums where they were discussing DOHC on a SOHC block. Just use the search button to look for the thread.
Just curious but what material are you going to use and how thick?
Are you gonna use a dremel or have it CNC'd?
