if you wanted your 240 to sound like a bmw form the inside, what would you have to do? I realize we have sound deadening, but how effective is it? and is that what makes our cars loud from the inside?. After installing coilovers, my car is a LOT louder, and if it is possible to add sound deadening? or take out the old stuff, and put in higher quality lightweight stuff :-D i'm just curious about this. I get sick of cranking my system up like whoa on road trips :-D thanks!,, and all creative thoughts are welcome.. Except when you tell me, who cares, take all the sound deadeneing out!.. (which is what i might end up doing if i can't make it better.. its one or the other..)
thanks!

how the hell does a car get louder by adding coilovers?

See Booousan63, by adding coilovers you change the sound dynamics of the vehicle, in this case, the 240sx. An S13 hatch is a unique example, see.. they have 3 zones of noise, first being the abnormal malfunction system of the car with the added coilovers this zone increase in DB , now can be heard by human hears otherwise undetected only by K-9 ears, these sound waves can also be fatal.

2nd zone factor can be an example of radiation, transfer of heat by waves or light, well this is sound radiation, works the same way on another level.

3rd zone factor is the car's ability to produced an echo affect, before only heard by dolphins .. are now registered by the human ear.

Ok, but I would assume by adding coilovers, you hear more road noise and feel more vibration due to the added stiffness.

AJ, I too plan to take off the stock SD material and install some kind of new/better/light weight SD material, which one .. not sure yet, but I have an idea.

maybe he has pillow ball mounts and crap

"Oh NO A BUMPY ROAD!!"

Maybe more tire noise is vibrated due to the firmer suspension (mounts and whatnot)

i can see road noise and mabye after a few days stuff vibratse more

but when i changed, besides the stiff ride, it was same noise level inside

maybe my ears are bad.

Since FLT-A2, interior noise increased, will secure things down and see if it chills out ..but road noise would increase, how much, depends .. remember my 3 factors .. haha

Booousan65

Can we say when adding coilovers, the car becomes stiffer and you can feel vibrations ?

So, with vibration you WILL hear noise, increased noise, becuase virbration is motion, when the equilbrium is distrubed, particles of air trasmit sound to the ear, so more stiff, more vibration = increased noise, say to say .. que no?

Example, you got this dood... black top of the line range rover, windows tinted, leather seats, tv's DVD's, biatch in the front, biatch in the back, BIG DRUM & BASS .. bass, noise, vibration BOOM BOOM BOOM .. is he a rapper or a dealer ? consdering he aint never picked up a MIC in his life

true true

maybe i just didnt notice it that much. i guess i expect when you modify a car there are some cons....well, to some its a con. to me pro! :)

use earplugs when you drive, barely hear anything.

AJ
11-19-2003, 07:48 PM
yeah, barely hear anything.. like a semi honking before running you over.. :-D

What types of sound deadening are there out there? and where are the important parts of the car to have it? I have a lot more noise due to the pillow ball mounts.. maybe if i put more sound deadening up next to the firewall?. I rode in a buddys m3, and i was just so amazed at how serene the whole experience was.. windows up = omg i'm in a coffin. It was amazing. Plus it makes music sound nicer, etc.

What would happen if i ripped out all the sound deadening and extreme dynomatted the WHOLE floor etc. Everywhere where sounddeadening used to me. This would cost a pretty penny... (cringe) but would that actually work? or does that not really deaden the sound, but reflect it. And in that case, would it reflect out the bad road noise?... ahh,, who knows.. keep ideas comming :-D

aj...theres a company that makes this stuff called dynamat (that may be the name of the company as well..i forget). but its sound deadening material. it looks like a big sheet of foam with sticky stuff on the bottom to attach to the material thas alrady there iirc. its used mostly for car audio guys who want super sound (cause it also makes the sound inside sound alot better cause things arent vibratiing and stuff). check it out. i dont know how much it costs, or how heavy it is but its worth a shot. look into it

All three of y'all are n00bs, so zippit! :P

Dynamat would do pretty well for you, but it is expensive stuff. There is some cheaper sound deadening material available at hardware stores, somebody posted a thread about it a few months back. . .

You pansies love spending money.

If you've ever taken apart a BMW, you'de notice they put sound deadening fabric-like material behind the panels. Its not about removing the shit thats on the chassis, its simply about ADDING stuff ontop of your panels. That should be sufficient in killing most of the resonating noises, since most of them echo behind the panels.

All car manufacturers are now designing thier cars with interior noise in mind, mostly they are concerned with wind noise. This is what most drivers complain about. I used to work for Cooper Tire & Rubber Co,in the Body Sealing Div, as a engineering tech, and I can tell you they spend millions of dollars in SD research. When you Mod your car you change the noise charecteristics as designed by Nissan, GM etc. So you may never get it your 240 as quiet as a BMW, but many of it's design features are also to reduce noise, not just stuff they add as they make the car. All car design is a compromise between form and function.

Personally I like to hear the air rushing past as I drive.

Just my 2 cents

go to a sound off, you will find guys competing in the sound quality competition with cars like 1988 honda CRX, and when the door closes it sounds like a vault door slamming shut.

Just a matter of sound deadening everything.
This mean taking out the seats, carpet, dash, side panels, and headliner, and covering everything in multiple layers of sound deadening.
And when you put it all back together you use rubber grommets or spacers on teh panels so that they don't rub together.

I have actually heard of people stuffing their car with regular household insulation. They stuff them in whatever pockets the can find in the side panels of the car, im guessing pockets in rear quarter and trunk sides, etc...

Try FATMAT, much cheaper then Dynamat and there line of products - but uses similar material. Works really good for reducing cabin noise. Basically $90 gets you enough to do your ENTIRE car, and have some left over

Ive put Fatmat thru my entire interior (doors, floor, rear panels, trunk) even just one layer and I noticed a huge diffrence. Exactly what I was looking for. When I slam my doors, it sounds solid, road noise reduced a lot, and the freeway noise is a night and day difference. Its funny because people always comment when im on the cell and i say im on the freeway, because you cant tell whatsoever - even going 80+ completely silent on the phone

EDIT: check out the thread over on FA (http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB7&Number=392148&Forum=All_Forums&Words=fatmat&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=392148&Search=true#Post392148)

or raammat, which you can find at www.elitecaraudio.com, its all over the forums.

to be honest though, its all overpriced when you compare it to an asphalt based roofing liner you can get at lowes for dirtcheap, its called "peel and seal," and its the same stuff only a lot cheaper.

parts express has some excellent stuff that is not asphalt based and is more expensive, but still cheaper than the name brands.

Here is my install of B-Quite Brown Bread. One of the best out there if not the best.

Link (http://members.linkopp.com/promo/surfingmoney/sdpictures.html)

I put it everywhere, on the roof, doors, and inside the rear fenders.

Check out the independent review here.

http://www.b-quiet.com/test.pdf

Website and more information.

http://www.b-quiet.com/brownbread.html

This stuff makes such a difference. I put it over top the factory sound deading material and two layers around the doors and under where the seats would be.

It's cheaper that dynamat, better and lighter.

i bought a carpet load of sound deadening from parts express when i was into car audio before. just adding sound deadening on the door panels wouldnt yeild much difference, its when you apply it all over the interior of your car that will yeild an audiable difference.

oh, and kid zelda, when discussing the 3 factors, you forgot about particle waves and how they are nonuniformily bimodulated.
