Hi all i installed my apexi boost controller and is wasn't working properly,so being that i work a lot i have no time to fiddle with the thing,so i brought my car to the local mechanic who owns a sr20 himself and is pretty knowledgable with performance parts.turns out stupid me let JGY customs do my wire harness biggest mistake of my life they charged me 300 to do the service which isn't all that bad.But these fucking assholes took three months to do my harness and the fucked it up!!!so low and behold this guy the mechanic charged me 1200 dollars to trouble shoot the wiring does that sound rite even though he charges 75 an hour but he told me he had two mechs on my car and that 75 per is he fucking me or what please give me some input thanks

If it is 1200USD, just buy new replacement harness from WS...

If your paying $1200 they better be doing a whole new standalone harness for the whole car.

Nobody does it right. The only way to do it properly is to do it yourself.

↑ QFMFT. I wouldn't trust anyone touching my car besides me, "certified" mechanic or not. Even if I break or screw up something, at least it's not as bad because it's my own fault. Hell I cringe a little when I have to take my car in for alignments and getting tires on and such.

But yes, for $1,200 you may as well pull your pants down and have them bend you over the counter. The Wiring Specialties pre-made harness is like $400-$500 depending on what you need.

short answer imo: theyre fucking you.

most stand-up, good shops, will discuss price point etc. with the customer to get a feel for them. i know for a fact my shop would never do $1200 worth of work, diagnosis or not, unless the car owner dropped it off and said "fix it, i dont care how much it costs, fix it."

sounds to me like you took it there and basically said "hey, im having some issues with this harness, can you take a look at it for me?" and they got "2" techs on it, at 75/hr. thats 8hrs between two guys to troubleshoot some wiring which is mostly bullshit anyways, especially if the guy knows his sr shit.

regardless, im not 100% sure how it is where you are, but up here, unless you signed something authorizing them to diagnose the car for 8hrs you dont have to pay shit

Sound like you are getting ripped. Did you discuss and agree on a price before hand? If not you probaly looked like a dumbshit to them and the took you for a ride. Pay it or expect a lien on your car. I eassume they fixed it right?

I basically gave him a list and to find out why the avcr wasnt working,i never said fix it no matter what the cost!i even told him i was going to have to work out a payment plan becasue i have bill rent etc like everyone else.when he originaly told me it was 1200 for 8 hours of diagnostic i flipped the fuck out.i said dude you charge 75 an hour and he tried to explain he charges 75 per mechanic with wiring issues. And i dealt with him before and he was reasonable on the price

I spent a month and a half hunting down shops locally and out of state (I live in Tampa, Fl.). The cheapest I found on a shop was 1100.00 and on the web from a complete stranger. 700.00 and all i wanted was to repin my back Usdm chassis harness to match the jdm chassis smj. After all that and everyone on my threads giving me the "do it yourself" responses, I just downloaded the FSMs and learned how to do it myself. I got it done and did it well. Actually have a chart for it that I plan to post up for future Rhd wiring conversions.

Just suck it up and go through the FSM and make it happen. You know its done by someone you trust and it is very gratifying once it is done.

Just my 2c's.

if you previously mentioned a payment plan (ie: explaining your broke like most people) theres no way in hell they should have done 1200 worth of diagnostics work. especially to just figure out the avcr. theres only so many wires that can go into a plug.

either way, theyre screwing you, id complain. unless you signed something authorizing them to do the work you dont have ot pay

If they think you couldn't pay, then you were an easy mark for taking your car with a lien. Seen it happen many times before. I left a shop I worked for because the did this to people all the time. Fixed or troubleshot, it costs the same in labour.

Jusk suck it up. Chalk as lesson learned. Now you know why most people do it themselves . If you don't have the time or money don't do it. Lucky its only 1200 bucks not 5000 or more.

if you told him not to fix it then he has to take the loss. Did you sign any paperwork?

From shop to shop They are fucking you real hard....Who really charges per mechanic. If one mechanic doesn't know how to fix it then it should go to the one that does...Not have one working and one watching, this isn't state work...

And I'm still curious as to how we fucked your harness up...Did the car run before you took it to the shop that reamed you? Cause if so then it wasn't fucked up...And why were you in the harness installing a boost controller???

And dude i could have made you 3 harnesses from scratch for $1200 and not of hurt your asshole so much

which shop is this?

also what did they fix on your car?

I had a harness issue at one point I paid about $1000 which included diagnosis, brand new sr harness, brand new cas, fixing chassis harness, installation, and aligning my coilovers and suspension arms

Forget WS.. $1200 will get you a mil spec harness from chasebays!

Either way wiring does usually run more expensive than mechanic work. Either buy a harness from a pro or DIY and follow the FSM. Period.

They don't have to put shit back together.Tell them to stop working on it immediatly. Pay what you owe them and find a friend that can help you fix it.

^^^^+2 to that.. Tell them to stop touching your car, pay what you had to pay (if you signed the estimate stating you wanted them to work on the car), and get it done elsewhere!

WOW - we do all raychem DR25 harnesses with txl wire for 900 - tefzel is slightly more - but TXL wire is gangster enough...

to spend 1200 on just electrical diag is ridiculous.

Charging per mechanic is standard. I tried to chase down a short in my miata once. Couldn't find it to save my life. I pulled the dash and still couldn't find it. I had way more than 10 hours in trying to find one stupid short. Shit like that happens. But for a shop to not stop and make a single phone call when they are about to go over $500 in labor makes them a shitty shop, but I don't think going to a shitty shop entitiles you to not pay them for the work they did.

So its finally resolved,me and the guy went back and forth we came to the conclusion of me just giving him 800 for the work he did and get my car the fuck out of there!!!!
