Picked up a 240 and drove it back home. It'll shift from first to second and second to third. Sadly, downshifting from third to second gives out some grinding and it don't wanna shift. Thoughts?

Couldn't tell you off the top of my head. Previous owner diagnosed it as a slave cylinder but if it was, wouldn't it not shift? I'm thinking that changing the old gunk out may do the trick but I wanted to measure first before I cut in, if that maked sense

Dumb question, what'd be the fix for a bad synchro?

Rebuilding your tranny.

rebuilt transmission

Dont use redline gear oil if you plan to change it out

You would have to tear down tne trans to find that out. If you are not looking to spend a lot, I would recommend doing small things first (changing fluid etc..) Then if it does not work, You can get a used trans. Replacing a syncro will cost you more than a used trans fot sure.

What'd you recommend fluid wise?

With this being the first actual Nissan I've had, I wanna take care of it.

i had a tranny in my s14 which grinded pretty bad, i used GM-syncromesh fluid, and it solved my grinding issues.. but if there is acutal mechanical failure and not just wear, then fluid will change the way it shifts.

Why did you use a GM brand?

I'm having grinding issues also, even getting it into 1st gear. I'm looking into getting another tranny, but would like to try this first.

I'ma end up changing fluid out this weekend and see if that works. I've got my fingers crossed that this'll work.
