So recently I traded one of my cars for a motorcycle and when I go to register it, the DMV tells me that the title I was given with the motorcycle is invalid because a replacement title had been ordered. When I contacted the seller he said he would contact the previous owner, as it was the previous owners father whos name is on the title I was given -__- So when I traded I was given an invalid title with a forged signature. The seller isn't cooperating with me as far as putting me in contact with the previous owner. Im thinking about taking the issue to state police as I'm sure they would take forging a title quite seriously but I'm not sure if it would do me any good as far as getting the bike in my name. Opinions on this?

I say do wutcha gotta do, report to the police. Walk into your local court house, and discuss it with them, maybe call a criminal lawyer and get their opinion as well.

I would be careful... If you knowingly accepted a title where the signature was forged you could also get into some trouble from what I understand. I actually had the EXACT same situation that you described with my most recent 240, down to every little detail. For the time being, I would recommend just staying on the guy that you traded with about getting the situation taken care of. The title should have the address of the original owner of the bike, so you could try contacting them to get it sorted out... Took me over 5 months to get my situation sorted out, sucked big time. Good luck.

Talk to the cops about it.

whether you took the title knowing it was forged or not knowing that it was wont be used against you. They athorities will bring the person whos name is on the title and the person who gave you the title to your attention and then youll be able to sort out the issue. If the persons do not cooperate then they are in contempt to grand theft auto and the record will show that you tried to title the vehical at a government building but were unable to. As long as the title place did their work rite. Went through the same shit with an s13 and the guy i got it from ended up in jail and paying for a lost/stolen title. The person who handed over the title is in deep shit if you take it to the police. Especially if the actual owner doesnt cooperate with the transfer. Thats how it worked for me.
good luck

Definitely report it. Sounds like a theft happened somewhere along the line.

Yeah I had no idea the guy I got it from wasnt the person listed on the title. Seller isnt cooperating with me at all, and ignores my requests to give me contact info for the previous owner. I suppose Ill just write a letter to the name and address on the title, if I dont get a reply I'll go to the police.

Yeah if you accepted the title "in good faith", basically meaning that you took the title with no assumptions of any wrong doing or any issues with it then I would definitely go to the police if something can't be handled. Wasn't trying to scare you, just wanted you to be aware of some other possible issues you might have to deal with.

Yeah, I hear that, just mailed a letter to the seller listed on the title explaining the situation and asking him to contact me. Hopefully no one has to go to jail. Thanks for the input everyone.
