View Full Version : your thoughts about my motor build-up

hey yall, i was wondering what your reactions would be to me building my sohc ka. i was planing on getting DeviousKa's mazda pistons and having him conect them to my rods. along with that i want the pdm c404.h cam, and of course having my motor bored 91.1 mm to make it a 2.5 litre. new gaskets and a timing chain, and maybe a s-afc. thats all the stuff that i was definnetly going to get for the whole build. i've thought about nismo motor mounts but i'm not sure if they're a great deal of difference. Lsd is coming soon build or no build so yeah. don't say anything about an sr because a friend and i are building a coupe strictly for drifting or autocross with an sr. so basicly, in this car i'm keeping the ka. thanks.

is boring it 2.1 mm going to be safe, its not getting close to the water jacket is it?

deviouska bored his motor to 91.1 mm and he says its safe... so i guess so

boring to 91mm, for na application, is safe. Machine work should be done by good machinist. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after examining many blocks and talking with my machinist i decided to do it. I have been running the same pistons in my personal car for about 5 months, and running the piss out the of the engine to make sure it will hold up. Boost situation is different as hotspots could possibly arise (just like stock ka bore). It is perfectly safe for na i would not sell them if it wasnt. I have built up a few 2.5l shortblocks for trucks and the customers have been more than happy.

Nismo240sx-
I have basically the same setup as you mentioned minus the safc. It is an absolute monster.

btw: the mexico cast truck blocks actually have thicker walls for the bore. These blocks are better suited for the setup but lack the bellhousing girdle on the block. you would have to use a truck starter and bolts with nuts to attach.

Any ideas on 1/4 mile times with an N/A SOHC setup like that?

so i take it a .2 mm overbore would be fine for high boost applications

deviousKa, devine montser... will i be satisfied? how much HP are we talking about here? thanks once again.

.2mm overbore from 89mm is nothing, yes it would be safe. standard overbores are .5 and 1mm.

nismo240sx-
you will be more than satisfied with the above mentioned setup. for a while anyway because you will always want more even if you had 200hp. All my ricer friends who drive h22 accords and civics after riding in my car are afraid to pull up next to me, or even ride in my car again. seriously, ka24e na should never be underestimated.

btw. i have no local dyno, im not going to guestimate hp increase

so, basiclly, considering i have an intake, cat-back, header, and no cat, is it possible that i could hit the 200hp mark? would a 50 shot of nitrous be safe after the rebuild? nitrous would be down the road, but if i do, it will be a dry system. thanks once again, i should be needing the pistons in a bit. btw, how hard will it be to swap out blocks?... i have a spare i could get bored while i can still drive my car. or maybe i could send it to you and you have it prepped, either way...

i've read posts from Bill Roberts... quiet an individual. haha. but getting back to deviousKa, pm me, and we'll discuss about ordering and payment and such. thanks once again.

I've never heard of using mazda pistons.. do they change compression? are they cast? Do they require different Rods?

did bill ever post his dyno results? ???

he said he would did i miss the thread or he never did! wheres billy-boy!!

I never saw them, and I think he may be out of the country??

Nismo240SX

sykikchimp, the pistons are machined down, and then the rods are honed to fit a 22mm pin. the pistons are just from a mazda b2600, deviousKA just stirred up the idea and did the math.

sykikchimp

does it change compression at all? When you say "machine the pistons" do you mean he is shaving them down so that the wrist pin to piston top distance is the same as stock?

I guess if it's cheap then go for it, but I would think you could get custom forged pistons made for about the same money as modifying mazda pistons, and stock rods to work together, and you could get whatever compression ratio you want out of it.. ?

There's generaly more power to be had from a compression increase, than a bore increase..

the overbore is just a positive side effect of the kit. the compression ht. is ~2mm taller than stock and the tops of the pistons are machined to clear the combustion chamber with proper clearance. The pistons yeild 10.5:1 compression ratio considering 65cc ka24e combustion chamber. Price of kit is $300 and includes a very high quality head gasket (best you can get without oringing). The rods have to be sent to me for necessary modification. Pistons come with either cast rings or hastings chr.moly for bit extra

Ahh.. I understand now. makes much more sense. Does this "kit" have a way to adjust fuel management to handle the increase in compression? How are you handling fuel? additional fuel pressure? What octane fuel are you using? Did you make adjustments to timing?

deviousKA

It is just a piston kit as of now. Comes with high quality head gasket as well as other things for low additional cost, i can even offer it as a complete rebuild kit (bearings, gasket kit, timing kit, etc..) at very good prices considering parts are higher quality than most.

At base ka24e 240sx timing i can run 92 octane fuel. For better performance/possible advance higher octane fuel should be run.

Is there any more info that you can send me on this kit?

I have a spare KAE that I may build up soon and am interested in what you can offer. My only concerns are reliability with a turbo setup. I understand you made some comments on turbo being not a great option but since my plans are on going KA-T... I figured I should build some bottom end too.

Im a bit of a noob so please make things easy to comprehend. :D

Thanks...

Beatjunky, isn't your spare motor inactive at the moment?:p I thought the old one took a giant crap?

yeah...lol...it pooped on me...

BUT...

My friend and I will pick it up and if it's buildable we make a UsDeeEhm TyT3 mofo beast out of it the best we can!:D

If it's still crap when we tear it apart then I'll do what everyone else does and get an SR...bwahahaha!

peace!

Ill be able to answer your questions later today, i just realized this thread was revived. I have -20 degree temperatures and plumbing issues i need to take care of first.
