I have everything off (manifolds, cams, bolts, etc) but when i try to pull the head off the block the chain guide seems to keep it in place. I didnt see this on any writes up but do i need to remove the chain cover and take that off in order to get the head off or what am i missing? is it possible to pull it off, and i just need to shimmy it off

Take a look at this write up. This helped my complete car idiot friend take his off with no problems if you follow it step by step.

you don't need to remove the front cover, that I know for sure. What I can't remember is the exact technique. I seem to remember if the chain drops into the cover, it prevents the guide from moving far enough. it helps to have another set of hands, sorting the chain and guides, while you lift the head.
Here is a write up I did a year or so ago. Might be helpful.
