If you are going to remove the tail lights, do I need to disconnect the battery?

thats a very politically correct answer. for safety reasons, you know.. in case you stick a wet finger in a light socket, right? dont wanna get shocked by that massive 12v bite

many things on our cars dont require the battery being disconnected. tail lights are one of them.

I make it a habit to disconnect the negative terminal any time I work on something electrical. You'll be less likely to forget to disconnect the battery when its actually required.
That way we won't have to worry about seeing a thread such as... "So I was changing out my fuel pump and forgot to disconnect my battery..."

I've actually changed a fuel pump without disconnecting the battery.
whoops.

Turn the lights off. With them off, there's no electricity going to the lights anyway.
Short answer, no.
Same goes for fuel pumps, honestly. Not to mention you unplug it long before you pull it out anyway.
