i just rebuilt my s14 sr cause i dropped a valve. after i rebuilt it the rattle came along with the rebuild. i redid the whole head valve springs retainers, new lifters along with rockers except for cams. and when i first started the engine it ran fine but after a few hundred miles it started rattling, but only right when you get on the throttle. but the weird thing is that it only comes on when the car is in gear. if its not in gear there is no rattle at all. but if the you put the car in gear and keep the clutch in and give it gas the rattle comes on. and it does it throughout the whole rpm range. but only right when you open the throttle, after that it stops. it does it wheather if im driving or not. it also doesnt effect the performance of the car at all. any help would be greatly appreciated.

the rattle sounds like its coming from the top of the engine. and when its in neutral it doesnt rattle at all. i had a friend that works on cars also that works for lexus look at it and he says it could be the cas cause he says the the rattle is coming from there, but he is not sure because he is not familiar with the sr20. ill try and get a video up

worn timing chain guides?

I figured it wasn't the timing chain guides cause it doesn't rattle when it's in neutral. Only when you put it in gear. My buddy says it could be the cam angle sensor cause when you engage the clutch and put it in gear. It is already putting a load onto the clutch so when that happens it prob sends a signal to the cas and the cas then spins even if the clutch is till engaged. I don't know though. Technical stuff. That's why I'm asking on here. I'm at work right now will get a vid of it later up

CAS always spins.. I was told nissans tend to have a chattery or loud valvetrain when i was listening to my SR but maybe its because i didnt check valve lash :/ Lookin to see if the vid shows its like mine

It's your vtc gear rattling. If you have stiffer springs in your car you are putting more tension on the gear. My car does the same thing.

Quoted for the truth. Either deal with it, or buy a new VTC sprocket...

One of these days I'm going to buy an new s15 gear. I hear they are slightly revised, but for right now I have a spare non-rattly s14 sr one if mine decides to crap out.
