View Full Version : Just an FYI, my sr20det running power FC passed the sniffer/smog test (LOL)

My smog guy for the hell of it tested the 240 to see its carbon levels. The funny thing is that it ran cleaner than most of the newer cars that run through his smog hut. The only thing I would have a hard time with would have been the visual inspection. I wonder if a stock manifold and airbox would have passed a different inspector.

That's not surprising. A Power fc can be manipulated better than a factory ecu if all ur trying to do is pass a sniffer. The argument has NEVER been "can an sr20 run clean enough to pass a smog functional test" it only has to do with legality.
Hell my SR runs way fucking cleaner than my '90 4-runner, my SR gets 25-27 mpg while the 'yota gets 15 on it's best days.

Sr20 passing the sniffer has been known for a long time. I've tested sr's and ka-t's for the fun of it and they passed.

the nv paperwork doesnt show the actual test results anymore as everything is all electronic now. the tune is my own untill I can have the car actually just dyno tuned properly.

My car passed all inspections in VA. The law might be different there. I have a '98 s13 sr20det blacktop. I dropped the car at the inspection station without telling them anything about the engine. It failed the first time becuase the O2 sensor was bad. I asked them to change it. They did change the O2 sensor, and they called me later to let me know that my car was ready for pick up. After two years, I went back to the same place for my inspection, and the car passed the first time.

Stock turbo manifold, egr, carbon cans??? I have none of the above. We just wanted to see what it would actually run like with the sniffer hooked up and it shocked the heck out of us. Luckily mine is a last year obd1 as the obd2 cars in vegas cannot be "passed" anymore ever since the big BUST of last year where over 73 smog techs were arrested in 1 day. The actual obd2 port was providing the DMV the actual cars VIN that was being smog'd even though the tech's were manually inputing the vin numbers of the car which needed the smog. LOL Sucks to have cars newer than 95's in vegas now.
I think next up will be a sleeper setup with full emissions equipment just to see if I can honestly pass visual out here.

Bump this thread. Can anybody help me on this. I just bought a 240 with a RB swap From Cali and Nevada has a vin inspection. I tried to get it smog first but the smog guy said, get a vin check then come back. So I'm worried about getting it register. Because what if they Denied me? Am I screwed? I've been googling and not really found a straight answer on what to expect when I get to the DMV vin inspection. I know this thread is old but anybody has a update on this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

i talked to a few smog technicians and they said when they do a visual they mainly look for aftermarket modifications and disconnected vacuum lines, etc. I'd put money down on a smog tech who isn't very knowledgeable on nissan motors passing you lol
