Ok search junkies, I have a job for you. I want an aftermarket bumper that's about the same size as the stock bumper, but I need more ports for air to get through. I've looked but haven't found anything. I didn't know what to put under search to I just did it this way. Anyway, post pictures or links please, I need some help.

1.) remove your front bumper
2.) cut out rectangle type shape in middle of bumper
3.) do same shape/size on the bumper support
4.) remove lower bumper vents
problem should much much closer to being solved

Halo that looks good. But how do you plan on doing that? ABS doesn't bend like that. When you figure out how, please let me know.
I haven't figured out how getting around to do it, but I do have one spare bumper lying in my garage to try it. :)
I thought about cutting and bending. Filling the sides with fiberglass... worst come to worse, i'll simply cut it open and try to fix in in place at the desired angle and smooth everything up with fiberglass.

Update! More air flow that isn't visible. You can't see the holes unless you look under the bumper. What do you guys think? It will look beter when painted.

i think i'm going to just cut the stock mouth out larger and hack the bumper core to nothing to get some more air.
but what kind of air are you looking for? do you need it for more air to the intercooler, or are you trying to get more through the radiator? or are you adding an oil cooler or something? there's so many different ways you can go but it all depends on what you really need that air to do;)
240silvia
11-07-2003, 07:41 PM
I did it to get more air to the radiator. I was having issues with my car over heating. And I didn't want to take out the running lights, or the FMIC. So I did this today, and good news, the car doesn't overheat anymore. I also raised the rear of the hood up, by placing washers between the bolt and the bracket. I plan on fixing up the holes tomorrow.

Bah. You are doing nothing with this. Since that is a high pressure area of your cars airflow, raising it up, makes the air coming over your hood go BACK into your engine bay. I explained it on numerous other threads. If you dont have a vented hood, the air will get trapped under your hood. blah blah blha blah blha blah. So dont do that. Seriously just trust me that its not doing anything the way you do it. (the proper way is with the use of an air deflector along that back edge and/or a vented hood).

What did you mean use a wind deflector? What kind of deflector can you put on your hood? I figured that it was letting hot air out. So if I remove them it will have the same effect? Any suggestions man? I'll post pictures of the finished product either Saturday or Sunday.

How about let's say, maybe everyone doesn't have $450 for a bumper. Even if I did, I wouldn't just get a front bumper and have the front of the car lower than the rest of it. I don't want a whole kit so Bomex is out of the question for me. This thread was to find ways around spending a huge amount of money. And that's what I did. Next time you post why don't you try to add some info.:D

Why would you want fresh, cold air? Liek the purity of air cools your engine? No. Air FLOW cools the enginebay. IE, air that moves over the hotmetal and KEEPS moving in one direction and is allowed to escape from the confines of your engine bay. This DOES happen, since the air cant go up, it exits underneath your car (how it was designed).
If you have this "cold fresh air" rushing TOWARDS the front of the car, and then you have the air coming through your radiator (and in this case FMIC), they will converge at one point and cause a lot of turbulance, then disperse to random parts of your engine bay, until they find a way out (still on the bottom, since the pressure outside the car at the trailing edge of you hood is greater than the pressure forcing the air out of your engine bay.
For the most efficient set up, a vented hood is best. It allows the airflow coming through the radiator to diverge up and find a route outside quicker, where it is carried out and over the car with the other air.
Whatever... i have learned that no matter how hard i try to convince people on the internet, they will still do what they are set out to do.

Ok, I knew there were going to be some people that disagreed with me. I knew that Dousan was going to be one of them. But, I like the running lights. I haven't seen another 240 around that has them, so I wasn't about to take them out. You can't even see them unless you kneel down and look under the car. Plus, I changed my thermostat and bled the car for an hour, so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. The thermostat was pretty much rusted shut. I should of changed it whenever I did the swap. Just so you guys know, I tried taking out the running lights to see if it would help, and it didn't.
And plus my girlfriend loves the running lights. And that's coming from a die hard Corvette fan (herself). :D
And Dousan, what do you think about the "raising up the back of the hood deal"? Do you think that it works

I garantee he agrees with me. Why? We talk about it all the time. Maybe you wont be so lucky... He usually makes fun of people who do that...
But the real question is whya re you building your car around what douasn thinks? Hmm. insecure, or just a sheep? Baaaaaaaaahhhh.

I'm not building my car around anyone but myself. I wanted input from another perspective. That's what this board is about right??? If you are questioning something, you ask, and you shall receive. So don't criticize me about my questions. Assumptions are a bad thing to make. No one is insecure here.

What's the point of that? What are you gaining by venting your intercooler pipes? Do as stated above and get a vented hood if you really want air flow. The amount of air coming in is only as good as the amount of air leaving. If you got a vented hood and a nice lip, your "problems" should be solved.

I don't understand why you guys don't like the running lights. I see posts all the time about them. And about how everyone likes them. Nissan_Convert, this wasn't to vent the IC pipes. READ the post. It was to get air into the engine bay, and ever since I did this, I haven't had any air problems. Also, if you want to send me $500 for a vented CF hood, then send it the hell on. This didn't cost me but about $6 and guess what, it works. I love cheap solutions.

best way for cooling (imho):
rad shrouds
NO daytime running lights (keep those spots open)
cut out on front bumper (as i first posted)
car undercarriage piece (the one that most pepole have taken off/fallen off)
rad flow director thingie (like Yashio Factory or Garage Defend)
water wetter or something like that
push fans (if you keep your clutch fan)
vented hood
um...that's all i can think of right now

is it just me or does that look a lot like a pignose bumper? you could probably modify one to make it flow a lot more air than the chuki bumper. having the lip (is it lower that the chuki bumper, or is that just when you add the zenki lip to the chuki bumper?) would also help create a low pressure zone under the car, pulling more air through the radiator.
i'd be willing to bet a lot of money that replacing the thermostat and bleeding the system fixed your problems. there are lots of guys running an SR with a stock bumper that don't have overheating problems. those holes and the DRLs won't change anything, they don't lead to the radiator, and going into the engine bay won't really help much.
if you are still having problems, water wetter is only $8 from summit and it works.

you guys are killing me. There is a simple solution..V configured set up. You'll be able to cool both the radiator and the intercooler at the same time. It's mearly a matter of making mounting brackets and some new hosing. You guys have plenty of room compared to me, so leave that excuse in McDonald Land with the plastic balls you have. ;)

Hmm that hole is kinda fugly, your car will look like an alien from far. Its got 3 holes on each side, and they are all diff colors, plus its all funky and uneven.
Make those holes work like brake ducts, hit the track and put em to use :D.
You are better off making a hacked up vented hood, check 240sx.org there was a right up on it.

I appreciate the idea of the brake ducts, but, what we have here is another victim of not reading the post. You can't see the holes unless you bend down and look under the bumper. yup, i'm lazy, I started following it early on, then I skipped to the pics and read some replies, not all.
Anyways don't take any of our opinions as offensful, its just something some of us would not do for the fact that we would do. If it didn't cost you too much and there is no negatives for you (since looks don't bother you), then more power to ya.
And I'd like to see how it looks when I see the car as a whole.
The reason why Brake ducts would work best with that hole is cuz its really low and would have more benefits to the brakes than the engine, a few people that I have talked to that did it were real happy with the outcome, but they were hardcore track whores.

Was there a specific reason why you didn't use one continuous piece of that black molding/stripping? :nono:
It's sloppy-looking in that respect. Otherwise, nice ingenuity.

You are still not listening, I care a lot about looks. But you can't see the holes when you just look at the car. So they aren't even really a "looks" factor.

I couldn't find a piece that was long enough, I do have to say that is the only thing I don't like about it, but there isn't anything I can do. Maybe I'll try forming the rubber to where you can't see where it ends.
And Dousan, I wasn't ragging his car, I was just saying that sometimes, people that run their mouth on here don't have anything done to their car. I didn't know who he was, so I was making sure he wasn't one of those people.

i run my mouth and i got a POS car. i aint ashamed of it!
jspec.com has a gp sports bumpa for sale
http://www.jspec.com/gpspor180typ.html
but youd need some sweet sides and rear to make it match up. GP sports will sit QUITE low over stock sides and such.

You should send me your DRFT bumper.. :boink: :p I'll give you $2 and some envelopes!! :D
Are you getting a lip for the Kouki bumper? Lipless Kouki bumper = I agree the OEM sides are a little too subtle..

Yes I sure do, but, if I wouldn't of told you, you wouldn't of known it was there. See, that's the point.
Thanks for the info Dousan, about the bumper, but I like having the stock look and being a sleeper. I just don't want anything that looks fast, not yet anyway.

"Isn't it ironic? Dontcha think? A little tooooooo ironic... yes I really do think. Its like Raaaaiaiiaaaiaiaiiin on your wedding day. Some gooood adviiiiiiiiieeeeeiiiiiice that you just cant take."
haha anyway i just thought its funny you said that yet the only thing i see when i look at your car is a HUGE (Way too big) shiny polished FMIC. Haha. Sleeper?

HAHAH wow im an ass... AHAHAHAHAH that rocks :-D
Im not an ass, im just logical, cutting a hole in your bumper and making it look shitty when you could take out a ricey f-ing light, thats not logical, thats stupid. Cut the whole in your bumper that looks alright (like the pick that dousan posted the 2 holes) and you wont have to get rid of your wonderfuly ghetto cand. lights (looks ok on some S13s, but only a few, not yours)
Also I like the sleeper comment, sleeper is an aftermarket Sidemount, and a Zenki bumper (JDM one with the SMIC whole). Thats fucking sleeper..
