there is about a half an inch of gap between my motor and transmission what am i doing wrong? clutch alignment tool slides in fine, is it possible my pilot bushing isnt pushed in far enough to cause that gap?

Splines prob aren't aligned.

You have to kinda rotate/clock the trans into place... it helps if your engine is tilted back some. Get a friend or two to help.
Is this an auto to manual swap?

yeah the motor was off an auto because mine was toast, but if the splines arent aligned wouldn't it have gotten stuck at the very begging? its getting stuck like right before its about to touch the engine

You have to remove something from the back of the auto crank before you attempt to put the manual trans in. There's a bushing or something that the manual engines don't have but the autos do for the torque converter.

This make sure you remove the auto pilot bushing and install the manual one other wise your going to have to drop the engine and trans again and swap them out. I found that out the hard way. It blows. Big time.

wiggle the tranny and push in harder at the same time and tilting the motor helps even more by loosening up the motor mounts and take the upper radiator hose off.

Had a customers car do this once.
The Splines on the clutch plate got a little mushroomed and had to file them a little.
take off the clutch disk and see if it will slide on to the input shaft

It'll go together. It might not seem like it but it will. My car did this same thing everytime I've dropped the trans. Reach your fingers in the back of the trans where the drive shaft goes in at, and twist it while you wiggle the trans back and forth and push it in. Helps if you have another guy in the front tilting the motor. Also you could get a piece of wood and hit the back of the trans in, that's what I had to do once. Mine never just slid in easy.

I'd refrain from trying to force it in. You can and will bend your clutch disk. Back it off some, spin the input shaft and try restabbing it. If you have too, put the trans in gear and turn it clockwise/counter clockwise to aid in lining the splines up. Use some force but don't just say fuck it and squeeze it together with the trans bolts. I suspect youre not splined correctly.

how did u install the pilot bearing u may have bent the pilot bearing. grind it the inside of it but not to much. remove the clutch and flywheel so u dont get any metal shavings

This, to can get a file at any parts store there like 2-3 bucks. I'm not looking forward to taking mine apart and putting it back together again just bc of this right here.

Like everyone said its an allignment problem or if you had an automatic the torque converter isn't fully seated

To get the engine to tilt back you can also put a jack under the oil pan with a piece of wood between them to protect the pan, lossen the motor mounts, and then jack the motor up until the back of it it hits the firewall ;)

That won't work if he's having alignment problems. File down the teeth on the clutch disk and see if it will slide onto the input shaft afterwards.

haha i read this the day after figuring this out on my own >:/ but yes the combo of c clamps and longer bolts did the trick.
