View Full Version : Pansies wanting HID

Just incase some of you were sitting at home watching porn and at the same time, happened to think about the lighting on their S13 and how much it sucks -- take a look at this:

http://orderxenarc.sylvania.com/orderxenarc/productthumbnails.asp?CId=%7BF8E8B61B%2DAABC%2D446 B%2D91AB%2DDE053C24A6D2%7D&NC=10292003114625

Your friendly neighborhood old_s13 wanted to let you guys know of a special with Sylvania headlamps. These are true-HID with a fully DOT-compliant lighting pattern. If street legal HID is what you want, here is your opportunity. At $300/kit, its really not a bad price.. considering they USED to run 800 or so.

One of the cool moderators on here recently ordered a set, I hope he will post a review.. maybe he will swing by my office next time he is in LA so that I can inspect them and let you guys know what *I* think of them. From what I've read, most people say they are pretty decent for HID.. but bottom of the barrel HID when compared to some of the higher-end projector retrofits we lighting dudes are accustomed to working with. I wouldnt say that is a bad thing though guys, because we are just lighting nuts.. and want the craziest shit that gives us stiffies. Bottom line is, that this is the easiest form of HID with the best performance for the buck. Being street legal helps, and it should be about 3 billion times better than the sealed-beam crap most of you are flying through the canyons with. (As for those of you who dont live near any canyons, you suck).

Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood old_s13 -- the really Really REALLY annoying bastard on this forum (more annoying than Mr Mespsjtotphles). :)

I have some questions....

If use HELLA projectors designed for Xenon, can I also use an aftermarket HID kit?

I'm asking this because the optics in my halogen(sp?) projectors were not designed for Xenon lighting (HID), while these HELLA projectors (H9 I believe) are designed for Xenon lighting.

Dum question: what would happen if I use halogen blubs with Xenon projectors?

<=== be nice to this guy :p

Just buy the XENON version of that lamp. There are two versions H9 and D2S, buy the one that supports the D2S bulb and comes with the bulb and ballast.

Ok, because I was thinking of retrofitting these projectors into my Kouki S14 headlights and using a "kit" for the bulbs and ballast. However i think its just better to buy the unit as a whole.

I don't think any HID is legal on the street other than if it came from factory. The reason being is for auto-leveling. All factory HID systems have auto-leveling installed, thus, you won't blind people infront of you say going through a hill or a bump. That's one reason that the HID sales has been illegal in the US and if you are caught you will be fined $5,000. Just a word of warning from your local lighting friend (me :D )

old_s13: I don't really care to much for an HID system, but I would like better lighting. What wattage would be safe for my s13, yet provide better lighting. I would prefer to leave the original wiring alone.

I know i'm not old_s13, but i've worked with lights for some time now. And from my experience, your stock halogens are the way to go. Some of the after market ones will run too hot and melt your wiring. And the others "blue tinted ones" often put less light to the road.

I wish I would have known about this about a week and a half ago... I ordered the H4 conversion through PDM, and just got it, plan to put it on tomorrow or Sat.

First of all, you are not the local lighting friend, *I* am. What you are, is a gay pussy-cat from pokemon. I dunno what to tell you, pal.. but even Star Scream's gay ass from the transformers had more balls than Meowth. You're part of TEAM ROCKET, how lame is that? I'm done with you -- change your nickname on this forum if you want to step to me. :) :) :)

Oh, and to counter your misinformation -- you CAN retrofit to HID, as long as its done CORRECTLY. The word "HID retrofit" is over-used.. just like the word "sportscar." For instance, if you take a set of Lexus IS HID headlamps and mold them to your car, that would be considered an HID RETROFIT. You can also take DOT-compliant HID projectors, like the 90mm's and put them on your car -- that is permitted. What ISNT allowed are modified XENON bulbs in halogen assemblies.

Auto-leveling systems are not mandatory in the US, however.. they are needed in Europe, in addition to high-pressure headlight washers. This is needed on cars with high-intensity headlamps. FYI, the auto-leveling systems found in certain model BMW's arent even real-time, they take time to adjust. For instance, the INFINITI QX4 has manual adjustment headlamp adjustment INSIDE the vehicle.. a nice trinket, but not required by law. Most people dont even use this feature, they load the back of their SUV up and dont even know that their lights are blinding people -- they probably dont even know about the adjustment.

Again, the *sales* of HID retrofit kits are illegal and companies responsible for selling these components are liable and subject to penalties. Consumers COUGHT for having non DOT-compliant lighting on their vehicle are ONLY given citations (if cought) -- they are not fined. The only risk the consumer has is any possible law suit, that is.. if they are responsible and cought for causing an accident.

That appears to be a good purchase, enjoy it. What makes you think you just wasted your money? For the price, you just picked up a pretty good set of headlamps.

Damn, I didnt know Bob Marley had an S13.. bigups! Respect rastafari! :)

Oh, to answer your question.. I think the wiring on the S13 is capable of running 80-90W bulbs. BUT, regardless of what you bulb you run.. it would be WISE to create a relay harness for your headlamps -- this will give you the most possible power going to your nice headlamps. Running relays is just the smart way to do things, period.

My bad, I didn't know I was messing with the "Star Scream's gay ass from the transformers" :o Ha ha, i'm just messing with you man. I didn't know it was the great mike of clearcorners, sorry for my ignorance. But as for the point you made about the QX4 with manual adjustment headlamp from the inside, E36 did similar in europe. My bad for the misinformation, you can retrofit another HID headlight unto any car. My ignorance forgot the fact that you can fabricate another headlight's HID "system" onto one's own and yet be legal. But as for these HID headlights you are selling, are the approved to be on another car? or approved by DOT? Or will they be mighty illegal?

how so?

I thought they were for single bulb units (low/high beam combo).

Looks like I will tackle this retrofit AFTER I work on the body, suspension and performance of my car. :) By that time there should be plenty of cars in the junkyard or part on e-bay. Now I need to do some research. Does anyone have any other links I can look at.....besides the ones that are on previous threads? j/w

tell me more about this retrofit thing... it sounds TASTY!

ESPECIALLY on how one would go about doing it to an S14... How does the wiring work? o.O I'm assuming the power to project some good light (ala retrofitting HIDs) would need some nice wires?

EDIT: after doing some research... how would making the beam pattern work? o.O I'm assuming jamming some BMW lights into the S14 housing wouldnt work... :D

i'm thinking of just going with the raybrig dual lamps (fog and driving light in one)...

I really need MORE LIGHT.... I'd like to atleast see the canyon edge before I drive off of it...
