Just wanted to start a thread to see other factory double din headunit conversion our fellow Zilvian would share. My project right now need a headunit and since I didn't feel like putting in aftermarket radio for the reasons below..
~ Like the Clean OE look setup..
~ Avoid unwanted attention from the you know what..
~ I need it to be cheap so some DIY will be involve.
Initially when I was doing some research I found this online which to me was nice enough..

For mine since I wanted something with an AUX and be able to complete the conversion for under $50. I will be using an 06 Dodge Magnum unit which I picked up for $25 at my local CL listing..

Anyways.. Please share your conversion, How you liked it and how much it cost you. Post only OE equipped headunit from any car installed to your S-Chassis car. Thanks!

Wow this sounds like an awesome idea.. I always hated the look of aftermarket radios and wished someone would come out with something that looked more oem (no stupid blue lights).. I never thought of actually using an oem radio though...

I actually found a jdm double din cassette and cd changer. I've been trying to convince the seller to part it out to me. But damn. 3K for a sr front clip with some other goodies to it man... I've been eating cup of noodles saving up for that clip so I could just have the oem double din. haha

Haha.. forget JDM and cassette. Get something you can read and nice. Hit up CL someone there is selling 05 350z stock double din for 60. You could prolly offer lower. This way you only need to eat cup of noodles for few days. GL!

Kind of pointless to me unless it has an AUX input. I can understand wanting a more modern look, but why if you can't even play from an iPod?

does anyone know if 350z has aux and mp3 cd player?? if so this would be a sweet conversion!
I also agree, this is a stupid conversion if there is no beneficial gain from it. It doesnt play MP3 or have an AUX. I believe Alpine head units are the best looking ones, and if you can get one that has an AUX port in the back of it, you can set up your Ipod cord in a very clean and functional way, and still have the second bin for storing your ipod and other accessories.

Then you should go to your local Best Buy and pickup those nice units if that's what you wish. As for me I just want a modern look for cheap and listen to my talk radio and fm stations. Everyone value things differently than others.

Certain things are not for everyone. Just because it cant play mp3 or have Aux makes it stupid. This is primarly a DIY thread making out something that some people would trash for newer units to something usable and decent than what came with the S13 stock. It could be a permanent or temporary rig till you get your prefered setup it doesn't matter.

I want a clean look. So sick of my old alpine with the tiny buttons and face plate that rattles at 3k rpm.

Just make sure your new radio doesnt require specific amplifier like bose or infinity and also you will need a security code if so equipped and good luck with finding the factory pig tail harness plugs.... hey anyone have a non bose 98 240sx factory radio? send it to me lol =) serioiusly:hsdance:

Plenty of adapter harness and reverse harness for sale on eBay for any factory OE radio. I believe they're like less the $10. Or maybe you'll find them at your local Junkyard for free :coolugh:

OEM units are great. I thought about doing a conversion once, but I like my Pioneer unit. If I do change it up I'll do a "carputer" type setup with a 6.5-7" touch screen.

I have this exact same set up I love it. Make sure all your wires are legit and not all ghetto rigged, it would sound amazing especially with speaker bracket adapters so it traps in the air behind the speakers. I would love to see a write up to add AUXILIARY output to these OEM decks, I hate having to use a tape adapter.

They actually don't look too bad. But then again I love the look of my alpine double din

Not a write up, but in keeping with swapping in later generation double-DINs, there are adapters on the market to do just that.
Granted, it's another $150ish, and you can't use it with XM, but it is still an option.

If you really want ALL the options though, nothing beats aftermarket.
If you really want seamless looking integration, nothing beats OEM retrofit.
The choice is yours.
Maybe someone can talk to Broadfield, and see what his input is on the situation. I'm sure if anyone knows the best solution, it would be him.

I have a new setup. OEM JDM 180SX Optional Navigation. The navi stuff was included but doesn't work in the USA but the audio hook up does, I'm currently using the iPhone for music since the radio (tape deck) is from japan and needs a band expander to work on US stations.

I have a 6-disc radio/changer from a Nissan Titan in my S14. No auxillary input, but it does play mp3 CDs.
The surround finisher was broken when I bought my 240, but I will make the radio flush mounted behind the finisher when I redo the interior next year.

Thank you so much, that is just what I was looking for, Money isin't a big issue for some thing as seamless as OEM design :) I don't like the aftermarket decks it attracts a lot of unwanted attention and does not have that smooth flow with my interior, Thank you again!

Wow nice find I would personally go with that if money wasn't involved I bet that was pricey

I am headed to the junkyard to explore my oem options. Do most of the oem head units have a built in amplifier or are they seperate? Just want to make sure all i need is the radio itself (with the harness).
I am kinda liking the bmw stock radios

Sounds like a cool idea. Something i havent seen personally yet. So use to seeing 240's with the 100 dollar head units from walmart lol.
I do have a Factory double din unit out of my old 350z however. It was an 03. Its sitting in my garage somewhere. I bought the car and took it out the same day as i had an alpine double din laying around.
If anyone wants its lmk. Pretty sure it does read mp3 discs.
