Hi, Just wondering if anyone has tried to paint the inside reflectors on the s14 LED tail lights to orange for a more OEM look? I think it would make the lamps look way better.

Interesting concept. I can see how this might cause controversy among Kouki purists. If you like it, then do it. You might be the first one to complete it (jus' guessin').

I think it would look better all red. The clear signal is the main thing that makes these lights ugly IMO so either could work.

That's a terrible idea. Why would someone want to make their LED Tails look like they were made in the 80's.

I know that's a euro spec bumper. I think that bottom lip was called the optional z spoiler or some shit.
On topic, I'm on the fence about it my self. Some cars might be able to pull it off, but I like how they look on my car as is. Plus, It wouldn't be easy to open those lights. I've tried and my plastic got reaaaallly brittle.

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I'm thinking you could use the same stuff people use to orange they're corner lights and stuff. I'm guessing its that vinyl as well.

Brentbohn, The 3M adhesive tinting film would be tinted a light gray to match my gunmetal paint choice to subdue the contrast of the taillights against the color. I'd fix the color of the corner blinkers to be a matching red with the brake lights.
No red tinting for me and spray-on tint is out of the question. If I decide to sell the tails, I can simply remove the film and they should appear like new for its future recipient. Voila

The problem with these taillights is you can't apply the transparent film or candy coating on the outer lens as it won't look correct. there is a clear lens over the face of the entire lamp and individual colored lenses underneath (red for brake/tail and red for reflector). The best option is to convert the oem taillights to led which is a very labor intensive and tedious process that very few people could do properly. And even then, the fluted primary and secondary lens would obscure the pattern of light emitted by the leds (especially wide angle 'automotive' leds). the primary could be removed but the secondary outer lens could not.

Thanks silviaks2nr for the tech. Can't really forsee too much of an issue applying the film over the outer clear plastic, but I haven't got a set of these tails just yet. We'll see.
I have thought about LED treatments to the Kouki tails, but yes, that would seem to be labor intensive....but so worth the effort, especially if you decide to keep the S14 for a long time. BTW, I'll never sell mine!

Thinking about this some more... there might be a way to remove the outer lens on the aftermarket lights (here- I don't know if they are permanently sealed or use grey or black thermoset sealant) and spray a candy coat on either the chrome blinker reflector or perhaps if there is an inner clear lens over the blinker portion spray that instead. I've never really looked at the lights that carefully in person to know what can be done.
Either way I would not use a craft/hobby store bought "candy apple" spray as they are dull in finish and not suited for long term use. Your best bet is to mix in a candy dye powder (i.e, HOK) with automotive clearcoat and spray a few coats of that. High quality transparent vinyl film works on exterior lens applications but I don't know about use inside of the lamp. Here is an example of my kouki tails with red vinyl with over 7 years of exposure to the elements. Obviously since this was a red/magenta film and not a red/orange it doesn't completely match the brake/tail lens; however the difference is hardly noticeable.

I can obviously attest to the durability of the product I used but can no longer find it for sale. It could be had through a custom sign shop perhaps. This is a similar product which I don't have experience with but I know other people use with good results:

Yes they are a million times better than anything out there, that is a fact.... of course $1400 tailights are going to outperform and look wayyy nicer than $200 ones. I'd still rock the cheap aftermarket garbage though - I just want a more modern LED style light without looking ricey. I mean, of course I want clear corners, but I can't justify blowing that kind of money on optics.
Brb.. lol'ing at $700 turn signals, and a $500 3rd brake light. God damn.

the high costs is due to them being hand built. thats not the point though. the point i am trying to make is, that stock lights are more classy looking then the cheap aftermarket lights which typically fit like crap, have water leakage issues, and poor lighting performance since they rarely have to meet any lighting standards.
im not saying that the clearcorners product is worth it, by any means or stretch of imagination. what i am saying is, is that a set of nice clean stock lights is better than most if not all aftermarket products ive seen.
i cant think of ONE product ive purchased for my car that has been low cost and high quality, unless its super mass produced (ie: stock nissan part). most of the market parts cost me 2-3 times that of stock.

You know what also looks really nice? The zenki tails with a clear lens instead of the amber lens... Wish I had a picture of that one car years ago that did it.
The amber blinker looks ok. not quite sure how it'll look but I really like having amber lenses because it adds color contrast.
Guess what, I found it.
