Were is your battery located? is it still under the hood? and i dont' think that the air coming off the fan is causing the motor to shut off it has to be electrical problem try closing your hood slowly and then look under the hood as you close it and have one person in the car watching gauges and lights for any flickering. if you have more problems pm me your number and ill talk you through some trouble shooting

sounds like your hood is touching your battery posts and creating a short. If you have the wrong size battery where it's too tall it could cause such a problem.

Did you do anything, or did anything happen to the car before this issue started? Like did you get an alarm installed? Maybe they installed one of those switches that are supposed to trigger the alarm when the hood is opened, but they wired it in correctly? Did you replace the battery or do any sort of work related to it? If so, then your battery is the culprit like previously stated. Did you mess around with the intake or something? Check whatever it is you did last, for example, if you installed a new intake or MAF maybe closing the hood causes it to contact the hood and disconnects it?

You should really get your temp gauge in order 1st.

I actually swapped in a Dual Cam.. my Car is a 1989,, i just swapped in a Dual Cam Motor off a 1993.... The car Idles Fine.... i didnt notice this until i would attempt to close the Hood
when i Say 'ATTEMPT"" i mean, i dont even have to close it all the way...
I SWEAR it has something to do with the air blowing off the Fan
becuase the car stalls even if i put my hand in front of the air that hits the engine..
wish i could get a video of this.. its weird.......

as for the temp guage, i want to fix it.. but im not sure how since did the dual cam swap.... would i need to swap in a Dual Cam Guage Cluster? or could my Temp sensor be bad....
-_- i know, i Know,, i should use the Search button... BUT,,, I have never seen or heard anything like this... car turns off because of the Air that is hitting the Engine????? im going to try my best and get a Video of this

Wow this problem sounds crazy... I'm gonna take a stab at it though.
I know that on the dual cam motors there is a harness that is routed right in front of the motor where the upper timing cover is. I believe it is the wires for the MAF and dizzy. I have heard that this harness often rubs on the timing cover enough to go down to the wire strands and short out.
In your situation, maybe the air from the fan may be moving the harness enough to keep it from shorting out. Check the harness. Sounds like a long shot but worth checking.
Good luck!

This is nuts. Lol. I say its a short. And as far as your coolant goes u either don't have it plugged in or the temp sensor is bad.

working condition? as in. does it move/blow air to the motor?
Yes, its constantly blowing air to the motor, it never really loosens up like i noticed other 240sx do.
I will try and get a Video up..
Do you have battery terminal covers?

no, the car infact Dies before the hood gets closed...
as soon as i lower the hood it starts to shake as if it wants to die... then when i Lift it back up.. it idles smooth
then when i lower it again (half way) it starts to Bog down and want to die and eventually does if i hold the hood half way
IT has to be something with the Air flow from the Clutch Fan or something related to heat? or a sensor

this actually wouldnt make sense because it seems as though the AIR HITTING THE ENGINE is whats keeping it alive
when i Block the air it just starts to die
I will get a Video so everyone can see this in Detail.....

any wiring running along the hood hinge itself? maybe ur car just wants to be free and let it all hang out

so by your response, your clutch fan is stuck... dont you think that fan would hit the hood n get stuck, then stall the motor since its attached to the waterpump.... its a theory but i have actually seen it happen..

you need to learn how to read. What he said was...the air is preventing the short....when you block the air...it may move a "wire" and create a short.
I'm also positive you are getting a short somewhere. obviously moving your hand in front of your fan would not turn off the car. that is irrelevent. Since your hood doesn't move in front of the fan. Does it rev past 3k?

^^ LoL, why you gota be so Rough???
anyway... the car Idles fine, and Rev's past 3k.... the only issue is when its at Idle..
i have moved the wires/ touched them in every way possible.. sprayed some Break Cleaner to test for leaks.. the only thing that makes my car Turn off is by Blocking the air from hitting the engine...
its kind hard to explain....
you dont need to close the hood all the way for the call to stall out... i think while the hood is lowered half way it moved the air in a different direction or something... then it stalls out on me.....
im at work so i will get this Vid up as soon as i get home...

Something has to be shorting out, It could have something to do with the harness. If its bogging down like you say it is. It could be fuel related, especially since it only happens while low on the RPM's. My guess would be to check the wiring near the MAF/AFM.

could a bad temp sensor and seized fan clutch be causing this? my fan never disengages ...so im guessing thats bad...
and my Temp Guage doesnt work, I have an S14 Intake Manifold, but i never put in the s13 Temp sensor....

The chassis cannot handle your awesomeness. When you touch the hood, awesome flows from your arms & overpowers the motor.

im in the South Bay area... hawthorne...
THE CAR RUNS FINE WITHOUT THE HOOD.
the only time i experience any rough idle is when i block the air coming from the clutch fan that hits the motor...
if i block it all the way.. the car dies..
i have a feeling this has something to do with my Temp Sensor being from an S14
and not an s13

Lay a piece of cardboard or plywood over the engine, if it cuts out? then looking for said short could be easier.:cj:

It's a wiring problem...you are grounding out a wire when you attempt to close your hood...get your temp sensor fixed or be in trouble...get a new cluster and cts (coolant temp sensor) can be had for like 30 bucks for both...

The air from the clutch fan is not what is keeping the motor running...
weissguy
06-11-2011, 01:38 PM
the air from the clutch fan might be blowing on a wire somewhere in the area, or even pulling on a wire if its on the other side of the radiator and keeping it from making contact with anything metal. When you slow that airflow or change its pattern by closing the hood its possible (but not probable) that a wire is then grounding out. Check for any wiring in the area of your fan. both in front of the condensor as well behind and same for radiator.

Ya look over you harness. a buddy of mine had this prob on his 1st gen eclipse it would kill the motor from time to time if we where driving it his car would back fire then shut down ha ha ha turned out to be something loose on the harness the hood would move the plug just right and kill it

Remove the clutch fan. Run a house fan in front of the radiator and start wiggling wires. It's a wiring issue for sure

This. Air outside the engine has nothing to do with it running or dying.

I got my Car running Guys, Thanks for all your Input...
I am not %100 sure what the problem was, tightened all of the ends on the intake, i rewired the maf and other wires that i saw that had some sketchy looking pieces.. and i noticed a few other wires that were hanging loose so i cut them and put some electric tape..
She's running perfectly smooth now, all i need is a New Fan Clutch, or some Electric fans.....
Mine is Seized =(
So you have or made all these mickey mouse wiring connections with loose wires, electrical tape and seized clutch fan (that you dont mention originally)...then you post a thread for someone to help you? WTF
I cant believe someone was actually going to drive out to help you.....Threads like this is why people "Really" needing help get flamed on....I would say just go to a damn mechanic that KNOWS WTF their doing but damn I guess I would be imbarassed to take a shitty car to a mechanic too...

I guess ill be the better Man and stop responding to your nonsense
his point is that numerous people told you it was wiring but you refused to believe them. So instead of actually looking for a wiring problem or taking it to someone that can help you chose to post on zilvia asking for help.
And the repeatedly chose to ignore the input given and insist that it had something to do with the air going to your engine. And then chose to blame it on the original owner instead of CHECKING YOUR WIRING like everyone told you to do.
Your not the better man for anything you did in this thread.
