View Full Version : I CAN NOT get my rear hubs off... any advice?

So I took my car to a shop about 5 weeks ago to switch out the hubs. They took off my old five lugs and put different five lugs on.
I now need to replace my axel and for the life of me can not get the four bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle off... I HAVE TRIED: rachet, air rachet, and attempted to get an air impact wrench in there but I can't fit even a small one.
I don't know what the #$_% they did to these bolts to get them in so tight, but how can I get them out?!?!???? Because of where these bolts are, it's hard to get much leverage in there between all the suspension bits...
Any advice or tips? I actually don't know what else to do. The rear end of the car is no apart and I can't even get it towed to a shop to get it done (nevermind that I can't afford that right now)....

You dont have to take off the hub to take off the axle. 36mm nut and it should slip off.
But if you really want to take the hub off try a breaker bar. They probably used heavy duty loctite.

This.
Remove the 36mm nut and the bolts on the differential output shaft that connect to the axle, then pull it out.

Ya, That would work, but I need to have extended lugs installed as well so I need to take the hub off unless anyone knows how to press in new lugs while the hub is on the car... :S

Take the axle nut off then undo some of the suspension links and bust the bolts off. An impact gun would definetely fit with the links and axel off.

punch out the old studs, then put the new ones in and install wheel and use a impact ont he lug nuts and zap them, should suck them in good then check and use a breaker bar to tighten. finish.

1) WD40 and I mean soak the hell out of it
2) torch heat it up
3) impact gun
once done that wont be it, a shock hammer with a fitting to yank the hub out
dont freak if the hub and bearing comes just get a press a put it back together.

I used a break over bar to get them undone. They are supposed to be tight, don't want your hub to fall off.
You'll have to get creative on getting the break over bar in there but it can me done.

1 you dont need to remove the hub to take out the axles
2 you dont need to remove the hub to take out the studs
3 you dont need to remove the hub to install the studs.

yep but if you are going that route, you can reach the 4 bolts on the back of the hub with an extension + breaker bar and by rotating the axle until your socket can go over the bolt. The angles are going to be odd so try and jack the car up as much as you can
-just replaced a wheel bearing last week.. used lots of pb blaster also
