how to tell if u have blown turbo???

how can u tell with out running it???
(this tread is actually for 2 turbos a T28 from an S14 and a T3 from a merkur)

other then shaft play ....what else can u do to see if it leaky or somethin???


also on the T3...ok i got it off the merkur (in running condition) and i took it home and did a kind of leak down test: put oil in the center section stood it up on its exhaust side let it set over nite and the oil seeped out the exhaust side.(ultra slow..still had oil in center section) now after rebuildin the T3 (cuz i thought it was leaky) it still does the same thing. i replaced everything (rebuild wise)....so...am i screwed?? or does this magically seal up under pressure?? (y would it seal...idk):wtc: :confused:

with some amount of heat the seals should expand, and seal properly. remember that the center section is directly connected to the exhaust, and will see pretty much as much heat as the engine can dish out. just be careful with that rebuilt turbo (hope you locktite-ed the nut holding the compressor wheel to the center shaft and had everything marked to re-assemble in as close to "spec" as possible).

Im not like some people who will tell you to search on this board...but SEARCH! I know this has been covered before. Decides the usual shaft play and free-turning (which could be hindered by not being attached to its oil supply) YOU MAY WANT to check the actuator, all lines and hoses, and so on.

I have a turbocharger sitting in my garage right now (not going on the 240) and i keep looking for ways to check it before I try and sell it.
