Hi Everyone,

I recently swapped out my throw out bearing in my 91 240sx, I had a Spec stage 3 clutch with the Spec throw out bearing that came with it and a resurfaced flywheel. The Spec throw out was no good, was making lots of noise and would go away when I would press down on the clutch. So I ordered a OEM one from Nissan and put it in. I also realized at the time of the Spec clutch swap I had used GL-5 Gear oil instead of GL-4, when I drained it, the oil stank.

After putting in the OEM TOB, I was only able to find 75w-140 GL-4 Gear oil and put that in. Put everything back together started the car up, TOB noise was gone, but a new whirring screeching noise started up as I pressed down on the clutch, also the rpms dropped pretty hard when I pressed on the clutch. Drove it around the neighborhood, the shifting was much much smoother than before, but the noises were still there.

It was getting late so I decided to call it a night and as I was pulling the car out of the driveway in reverse to park the other cars, the car stalled hard, I restarted the car and noticed a drop in pressure on the clutch pedal, and the noises were still there even in neutral so I shut the car off and rolled it up the driveway.

I don't know whats the cause of this or if anyone else has experienced this, any help would be great, I plan on taking down the transmission again and reinspecting what we did. Could it be the gear oil? I read that I should be using 75w-90 GL-4 gear oil. Maybe I put the TOB backwards? could that cause this? I applied some lithium based grease around the input shaft, could it be that?

a had real bad chatter on my 5.0L mustang and it was the fingers in the clutch and idk maybe the screethching you speak of is a bearing problem

*UPDATE*

Ok day 2, we dropped the transmission down again to reinspect our work. Turns out we did a foolish thing of putting the throw out bearing on backwards. Brand new bearing from the dealer gone to waste. Drained out the questionable 75w-140 Gear oil and got my hands on some Redline 75w-90 MT-90 Gear oil. Went out looking for a aftermarket throw out bearing from any local parts shop, only thing i was able to find that was of similar design of the OEM one was a bearing from Kragen from a single cam tranny. Installed the new bearing, put in the new gear oil, mounted the tranny back into place, started the car up.

Results are that the car started up fine, the screeching noises are gone, there are idle fluctuations, but I think they are due the ecu being reset from unplugging the battery. Clutch pressure is still lower than before, bled the clutch, there was little improvement. I am also back to square one where you would hear the traditional throw out bearing grinding from a bad throw out bearing, press on the clutch and it goes away. On a side note my stereo does not power on, I believe that is due to me putting the ground wire back on incorrectly. Also fixed an exhaust leak.

Next step, I believe since i have installed 3 new throw out bearings now, that the so called throw out bearing noise is not it. It could be the main bearing in the transmission, as for the cause of the lower pressure on the clutch pedal, it may be that the single cam bearing is a lot thinner in design than the one that came with the spec clutch and pressure plate, even the OEM one was thinner and I noticed a drop in pressure on the pedal with that. I may have to get one of similar design, though they all work, I guess its best to use a Spec bearing with a Spec clutch.

I plan to hit the junkyards this weekend since it is a long weekend and they will be doing 50% off everything deals, hopefully I can come across another transmission. Also about a week ago I came across 3 complete VH45DE Q45 V8 Motors, I plan on pulling those out if they are all still there this weekend, so if anyone is interested PM me for a update on those.

The 75-140 was in the system for about half a day before I drained it, on the other hand the gl-5 was in the system all 3,000 miles since ive put the new clutch kit in. I dont know what kind of oil the previous owner had used but it stank very bad when I drained it. As it stands now I am driving the car, but with the typical bad "throw out bearing noise". I think the tranny was in bad shape to begin with when I bought the car, considering it wasn't even on the car correctly when I bought it, the top half of the bell housing had a open gap. The car was clearly abused by the previous owner, but I plan to restore it and give it plenty of love.

The 75-140 isnt as bad as using GL-5. Gl-5 can lead to very large damage since theyre are not soft metal friendly. The clutch master and slave cylinders could be bad if theres no feel to them, try re bleeding. also spec isnt known for creating the best quality out there so there may be something wrong with the clutch. Try replacing the TOB once again with the OEM nissan one and install it the correct way this time?

The OEM nissan one is destroyed, there is no spin on it at all. The clutch master, Spec clutch and pressure plate are practically new, the slave master on the other hand I dont recall ever replacing it, I did notice a small amount of smoke coming from its direction when I 1st started the car when I had put the OEM nissan bearing on backwards. Ill look into the slave master tomorrow after I go to the junkyard. Ive re bled the system twice and there hasnt been an improvement on the pedal feel.
