So I rented the hub puller and go to work on friday at about 1pm. I grinded down about 1/4 of an inch off of the JDM five bolt shafts (I fucked them up hammering them out) until the axle nut would thread on nicely. Removing the open differential was simple, but took a while since i was by myself (thank god for liquid wrench)...but i ran into problems dropping in the 180sx vlsd. I installed the axle shafts and for hours could not get the damned LSD lined up. I tried countless times lowering the LSD, jacking it up, shoving it, getting under it and trying to guide it- nothing seemed to work. It seemed that the drivers side axle shaft was just in the way and wouldnt let the LSD bolt up correctly. It is now about 1am  I had to work the next day at around 3pm, and knew if i went to sleep now that I would never get it done and since I didnt want to skip work, i kept working. Anyhoo I took out the drivers side axle and of course the LSD mounts perfectly. Then I tried to install the axle shaft (double  ) as the axle shaft was no where close to fitting. I squeezed so hard on the damned thing that i popped the cover off and got axle grease all over my exhaust etc....It is now 3 am. I unbolt the LSD and it pops into my head- What if the axle shafts are different sizes? I let out obscenities at 330 when I figured out that one axle shaft is about 1.5" shorter than the other...Needless to say the LSD installed perfectly after this discovery...I didnt finish all up till 5 am!!

I am very happy with the install though, but I think i am now 300% more likely to get a moving violation :p

Congratulations!! I did the exact same thing. x) damned different length axles!! :p Also glad to hear that it works (apparently). Good job! After this you should be able to swap out diffs in under 40 minutes by yourself...

So you flipped them to different sides and it worked, is that what you're saying? (I'mma DIY guy too) I might be doing this soon, so I wanna get all the shortcuts I can up front. Good job dood, congrats.

Now did you swap guts s-13 to s-13, or s-14 to s-13? Or did you swap the whole pumpkin? Thanks man.

:hammer: Probably how you felt around 3:45AM? I've played that game.

it was a 180sx differential, those have 5 bolt outputs instead of six...just swapped the whole pumpkin and axle shafts, changed oil etc. also I put in two quarts, i was waiting for it to overflow but it never did. also when i drained it only a few drops of oil came out...im going to ask the seller if he drained it previous to sale but afaik it works fine. Short shaft on drivers side!

Wow... well, think of it as taking one for the team! This post cleared some things up...
Especially because I found some one selling a JDM 5bolt LSD too. But I dont know if he has the half shafts too. $350, too cheap for VLSD and shafts huh?
Also, hows life with VLSD? Been doin the Dorifto?
