View Full Version : SR20 f*cked after compression test? Please check with me
Long story short:
After last weekends dragevent the car gave some white smoke when hitting gas or letting go. Sparkplugs are white btw with black innercore.
So drove around the block tonight and did compressiontest:
- warm up
- disconnect fuelpump
- take plugs out
- open throttle
etc.
50/52/42/50 psi..... :eek2:
after the oilspoon I've got 156/160/90/158 across.
Ok, fine. #3 is bad. Build stuff back together and started to get the oil out... white smoke..... more white smoke... entire block is white now and the car wants to stall. Vacuum is dropping off.
My conclusion: bad pistonrings and a blown headgasket?
Please guys, let me know what you think before i pull the engine out.
Thanx,
Daniel
Edit: Coolant looks murcy with brownish sealant in the expansionreservoir => blown headgasket.

sounds like a strong possibility.

Sounds like a HG, but drop the oil pan and see if you can see any shavings

just do a leak down test.

I hear you man i had the exact same thing happen to me .... 3 times in a row... Basically its a blown head gasket maybe you over heated the block or pushed to much boost on a stock tune and POP goes the head gasket..... Heres what i did to finally get it running perfect
- first did a compression test.
- then did a leak down test.
- found out that it was a blown head gasket. ( but could also be bad rings)
- take motor to machine shop have them check.
- new rings, resurface block and head, have them check to see if its warped
- arp head studs and cometic head gasket
- make sure everything is torqued down correctly
- and make sure there are no air bubbles in the coolant lines
thats just my experience hope could be of some help

according to your post... all the cylinders are fuked..
" 50/52/42/50 Dry?
156/160/90/158 wet?

thats kinda how my experience was except i didnt have that big of psi jumps from being dry to wet like 60 psi jumps
@95Zenki: Your list is exactly my idea of things to do. Will take the engine out this weekend.
@Chris: Yep, sounds like it haha. New rings are gonna be in when stuff is apart, so should do the job icw new headgasket.
Update:
Did another compression test to rule out a faulty gauge and this time the numbers were all around 90 psi... checked my neighbours fresly rebuild engine with known 150psi comp and the gauge read another 93 psi....
Not the best measurements but a good indication bottom end seems to be ok.
Took the engine apart and found out
- Oil + coolant on all 4 cilinders/exhaust ports
- Headgasket looks fine
- Pistons look fine, no damage
- Rings are there (feeler-tested around piston)
- Walls are perfect
I think i lifted my head?!
What else could pour oil and coolant into ALL cilinders?
Ideas are appreciated guys :bigok:

hmmm how much boost running?
1.3/1.4ish bar = 21 psi on a warm day...
This is all on an unopend stock block (as far as I know, since two small outher headbolts were missing when taking the head off, OEM hg inside).

stock tune im guessing?
JWT ecu tuned for all the boltons.
How hard is it to unbolt the headstuds? Got myself the 10mm torq with a 2 ft. piece of pipe and some decent force and the studs allready squeled.
Can remember it took severe more power/PITA last time i took them out of a Primera engine...

21 psi on stock turbo with stock HG and bolt ons.
You fucking joking? How long were you able to run this?
21 psi on
stock block
2871 .86
z32 maf
nismo 740cc
JWT ecu etc. etc.
Sorry, my bad.

That's still a very large amount of boost for stock headbolts and headgasket.
I'd say get your head decked. Get a cosworth headgasket, and some arp headstuds, slap that shit on, and call it a day.

Thats exactly the plan if im sure the head lifted and nothing else is f'cked.
Thanx for your support guys.

I think the head lifted as well. White engine indicator.
Thats probably the good news.

True true, but just think about it, if you have the funds, now would be a perfect time to upgrade the head a little bit. Springs/retainers, RAS. Shouldn't be too expensive.
Jup, i know. Especially when you know I've putted TODA cams in last month so I didnt have to take off the head for new valves and springs haha... (considering the HKS step 2's).
