i just bought my 240 in september so this winter will be an adventure for me. With RWD and no ABS, i'm gonna be driving like your grandma so i dont wreck my car.

Its going to snow soon here. I wouldnt dream of driving my 240. All of the roads in my area are steep inclines and very windy. Thats why i bought my 86 much lighter and i can run 13" skinny snow tires

i get scared like a [email protected]#% in the rain. i wouldnt ever go where it snowed with my s14. im in norCAL and rain sucks! i was getting onto the freeway from one of those cirlce on ramp types, and i tried to accelerate a little early before it goes strait. the thing just whips out. this was on Kumho 712. this winter im on nitto 450(GARBAGE TIRES!!!!) i hate them, i dont think itll be any safer with this set. im only 19 so i cant afford another car.

Now that I'm putting on my snow tires for winter #3 with the 240, they dont have much tread left. Guess I'll have to be extra carefull this winter.

some days it gets like 40 below (celsuis and farenheit are the same at 40 below) and the car still starts and drives me to school and work even in the extreme cold and wind. It doesnt like it tho. I prefer rear wheel drive in the winter myself, having tried front and rear wheel drive. Actually all wheel drive is better, yes, but i like my RWD. Its not bad once you get moving.

Damn that is cold. You need to invest in a block heater to keep from killing your engine. Can you park it inside? The tranny fluid is like jello at those temps and the pumpkin fluid...oil is like STP and the engine is contracted down to measurable tolerances and tight.

At least let her idle until you get the temps up. Poor tranny, poor pumpkin...

yeah, It came with a block heater from the dealer when the last guy who owned it bought it. I always let it get warm first before I drive it, at least in the engine department. It never really gets warm in the car since there is a lot of glass... It doesnt get that cold very often though.

PS Bill check your PM's

I'm runnin it for the second year in the snow, hopefully this winter isn't as bad as they expect. I bought snow tires and i'm gonna weight it down just a bit in the rear (~120lbs.). I drove it last winter with dry traction tires and survived, just got stuck a bit. remember, people used to drive RWD exclusively in the winter back in the day, so it can be done if you know what you're doing...just be careful.

and on that note, no i don't want to drive it, but i don't have room for a beater at my house. i wish i did.

how you guys get anyone traction and can actually drive without sliding all over is beyond me, ive driven other rwd drive cars/trucks, but for me the 240 is going to be put away in a couple weeks, i dont want to risk wrecking it, that is what happened to my previous s14, hey, atleast if you all pile up your cars this winter then those of huh that dont drive in the snow will have even rarer cars:boink: :boink: haha, good luck with it tho, and can i suggest not to add wieght to the back, just get really good snow tires

be careful weighing the car down
it can improve your ability to get moving but impede your ability to get out of a skid should this happen...extra weight to control. No one in my family ever weighs down the back of their cars, it can do more harm than good

that's why im using very little weight...its about the weight of a stereo system, so i figure it will be all right...i experiment a lot to find a good balance.

F'That. RWD Rocks in the Snow! Especially with snow tires. Im scared in FWD cars in snow, no control.

Just to keep the car out of the snow, i was tempted to ride the motorcycle during the winter...or buy a snowmobile and hope that it stays hidden from the cops.:D

I drove my s13 last winter in the snow with cheap tires, no good. But i still managed to keep it under control. Just keep the speeds slow and reasonable. Hills are where it gets scary, you dont know if and where its just gonna start sliding. And driving with an open diff in snow can be frustrating. To minimize tire spin im just really easy on the clutch and usually start out in second gear instead of first. I really need to get some snow tires for winter.

I wish i could afford a beater to drive in the winter. I try to avoid driving long distances in the snow when i can. I sometimes get a ride from my brother in his RS(awd).

i've got somethin AWD on the way for a new daily driver ;)

i've driven my 240 through 3-4 winters w/o snow tires and have NEVER gotten stuck to the point where i needed help out.. at first i thought it was kinda fun driving in little amounts of snow, but when you actually have to be places its more of a pain than fun. so basically it can work, but i really wouldn't advise it if you have a choice. and if you have to do it be very careful and don't mess around on the streets!

i have a feeling the number of 'drift' damage threads is gonna get even more obnoxious in a few months :o

yeah ive found out that weighing actually hurts on our cars....but on big ass trucks that can hold up to 500lbs, it helps...

its gonna be another fun winter to say the least...man o man i hate my open diff...nothing like getting stuck on a small hill with traffic going 5 mph, how embarasing :(

i should steal morgans13's vlsd, btw you put that in yet?

Yea, that's one thing i miss about Alaska.......the winters! Snow is the best! My dad and i had so much fun in his bimmer in the winters. granted we got stuck in flat parking lots with 3" of fresh but it was worth it. It's gonna be interesting here in norcal with a 2-way and coilovers. gonna b really sketchy. I guess my mom isn't driving my car anymore in the rain. haha

The weirdest feeling i've ever had in a car was when we were stopped at a stop light on a slightly cambered road and the car just started sliding sideways. SO weird! And there's nothing you can do about it. really crazy.

The other funny thing is watching to see how many crashes there are on the first snow. Even tho the people who are getting in the crashes have been through numerous winters before, they still go to fast and get in crashes. iditos.

Hehe, my buddy just called to let me know he got me a set of studded snows for $100, brand new. I guess I'll be driving the s14 this winter instead of looking for a beater as I originally planned. I tried it last winter with bald tires, then on AVS es100s... :bash: I do NOT recommend driving a rwd car on bald tires (steel cord showing) on 30% slopes in the snow... learned that the hard way!;)
