I though I had $250 (woohoo) so I was gona get a rear STB. Then come to find out, I over spent (on something else) before the money was put in and I got charged $60!!! plus still had to pay the $5 I over spent. I was pretty bummed so I went out for a drive (like I always do when I'm bummed) and after I was out for a little while I started driveing harder and harder...woohoo fun 90mph on little back roads takeing turns at 50mph, lots of fun right? Well on the last good turn before I get back to civalization (and 5 minuets later my house) I'm takeing this corner and just around the turn who is waiting for me? Thats right, jonny law...So he gets me for a 48 in a 35. I dono how much thats gona cost me but I basicaly just pissed away almost all my money. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gona go get drunk and piss away the rest...

sorry to hear that. if you were doing 20 mph over the limit, it would have been an even heavier fine, and the traffic lawyers charge more. so think of it as learning from your mistake, get a traffic lawyer, and drink up! save your worries for tomorrow.....just don't make it a habit. heh.

or, get one of those things that makes the radar don't work, i saw it on an ad in a mag, but it was illegal in CA (wher ei live) and couple other places. it like makes the radar so it don't reflect back or somthing...
that sux david i got a ticket today too. except mine was for my tint. i was at farm fresh and i saw a cop (being the normal dick that they are) pulling over a civic and looked like an integra, and writing them up. the spot they puille dem over at was in the parking lot near my car. i decided to stay in the store for a couple more min till he left, b/c he was taking a look at my car too. finally he left. i proceeded to go out to my car, and i pulled ouyt of the farm fresh parking lot, ... and all of a sudden, whoo whoo. #### it!!!!!!!. he pulled my over right asd i puled out . he was waiting for me. my windows were down the whole time. he looked at my exhaust, looked at my front windsheild banner, and then asked me to roll up my windows. then he told me it was way to dark wrote me the ticket, and 15 min. later he was off happier than can be for screwing me over.

I used to do it ALL the time. I only got 1 ticket in my car because the cop snuck up on me when I wasn't paying attention. If I saw the cop turn around or flip on his lights he was toast, I was long gone. Although that one occasion was for 59 in a 45. He said I was doing 61 but was gonna be nice and drop it down. I thanked him and went straight to my attorneys office.

Things that make radar detectors don't work are scams, and illegal everywhere if they did work. These are not worth your money. However, a radar detector most certainly is. Because radartest.com gave it the best markes, I got an Escort 8500, but they're kinda pricey. However, the first time she saved my sorry ass, I had already broken even again. Another favorite is the Valentine, but I just liked Escort's better, and radartest seemed to as well.
Regarding running from the cops, I've done this a few times, and made it all but once. The problem is how much it depends on the lead you already have, the cop, and the neighborhood. If you're not on home turf, you're best off not trying (that'd be the one time I didn't make it). But, if you are on home turf, you should be able to judge ahead of time your route, and whether or not he can keep close enough behind to see your route.
Even still, it's awfully stupid. And I'm probably more lucky than anything else I pulled this off. It all started the first time I was pulled over and realized, "I so could've made that if I had only kept goin". After succeeding in doing so three times, it all ended the first time a cop slammed with four tickets, adding, "You're #### lucky I'm not giving you another for evasion as well". Looks like it all evens out in the end.
And, oh yeah, the moral here is that while immeasurably better than 20/20, a radar detector's vision is never perfect either. I (we all) should probably consider slowing down.

i bought a cobra radar detector. it's too #### quiet when it alerts you. i bought the radar detector then got two tickets in the same day! haha. but they were state patrolmen in black crown vic's and not using their radar. (hey i thought they were racing me, i outran them) but they caught up. anyways. radar detectors are cool. i haven't gotten those tickets in 2 years but the radar detector lets me know when the cops are around so i can turn down my stereo in time. it's saved me from more peace disturbance tickets than speeding tickets. and that's with a cheap radar detector, next one i get is the valentine.

I've heard Valentine is comming out with a Valentine2 with updated circuitry and stuff. The reason teh escor t did better was because it's brand new technology, the V1 is running on like 5 year old Circuitry, and still keeps up. Can't wait to see the V2..

Ah, but if you purchase the optional "Service Plan" for the Escort, not only do you get a lovely bill line item on your credit card bill reading "Escort Service Plan" (read that again if you missed the humor), but you can also have the firmware upgraded for free for three years. That's kinda cool. =)

Is there any way a cop could know your using one (other than actulaly seeing it)? Whats the range? Does the radar actually have to be hitting your car for it to detect it? Any links to info would be great.
Oh, I went and talked to the bank and got my $60 back, woohoo! But still got charged $20 on other fees but better than $60. Also, if I take some class, I don't get the ticket since it was my first one. I dono how much the class will be but hopefully not too much...maybe just a couple hundred. Still a lot but maybe, just maybe my insurance won't see my ticket if I take the class *crosses fingers* cauz thats whats REALLY gona hurt my wallet.

cops are fucking assholes, they belong in ####.
hrm...I dono about that. I have nothing but respect for most cops...they actually help people and solve crimes and stuff. But the ones just driving around with radar on just looking to give out tickets need to be beatin badly for being such pricks. Or pulling us kids (or young adults) for haveing dark windows...####, get a life! BTW, dave, I thought your tint was legal? Its only 20% right? Are you gona fight it?

Woah, that's a ton of questions there. Well, in order...
Can you get a good one for under $300?
The Escort Passport 8500 is $300, and the Valentine is $400. Those are most frequently accepted as the best you can buy.
Where can I get one?
I've never seen a Valentine in any store, and have only seen the Escort very infrequently. The BEL980 is a very respectable option, also costs $300, and I see in stores kind of a lot. But, friends don't let friends pay retail. Go to eBay.
Is there any way a cop could know your using one (other than actually seeing it)?
Cops can detect radar detectors using VG2, but even cheap detectors from Radio Shack ($100 or so) do a fine job of detecting that for you. If a radar detector promises "VG2 stealth", that usually means it will turn it's sensing ability off upon detecting VG2 as to make itself invisable. Of course, it can't detect actual radar anymore, but that's okay, because you slowed down as soon as it told you it was in "stealth" mode.
Whats the range?
This varies greatly depending on the detector, the gun and the terrain. Check www.radartest.com for test results. When I say the Escort is the best, I mean it detects the farthest. But this still depends on the gun. There are three types of police radar in use.
X-band is the easiest to detect from the farthest away, but is also the exact same frequency used by the motion detectors above doors at your local grocery store, so you'll be pickin' those up too.
K-band is essentially a driver's favorite, as it's pretty easy to detect from afar and hardly ever a motion detector.
Ka-band is essentially a cop's favorite, because it's the hardest to detect. When your detector starts beeping that it just sniffed out a Ka gun, slow down and slow down now; you probably only have a second or two left.
Does the radar actually have to be hitting your car for it to detect it?
No. Radar waves behave much like sound waves: when they hit something, they bounce off in every direction. That said, if a cop shoots the car infront of you (or even a quarter mile infront of you), your detector will pick up the stray rays.
Lasar is another story. Thankfully, only about ten percent of police nationwide use lasar, but it fires a beam straight at it's target and straight back to the cop - just like the wave of light it is, not sound. Lots of detectors claim to be able to "see" that beam even if it's front of them, but only the expensive ones aren't lieing. I have no idea how this works, and have only seen it work once, but it does work.
Any links to info would be great.

don't know how it is in your state, but here in NC You can have 2 tickets and they won't affect your insurance as long as they meet certain criteria:
One thats under 10 over, and one PJC (prayer for Judgment). So your probably golden.
The class is a Defensive driving class. Been there, done that. SUCKED BALLS. bored out of my mind, and useless. You could actually get an insurance BREAK though, if you tell them you took a defensive driving course. (just can't tell them why..)
