I got like $3000 and im lookin to do a motor swap. I wanted to know if its feasable to drop a sr in about that much. I sourced a cheap s14 sr for 2200 but no harrness and ecu, but i found a ecu for 120 and a harrness for 300. The only other thing i would need is a ic, and i can most likely get a sterion frmic for like 100 out of junkyard. So is like 300 for miscilanious goods. Does that seem like it can be done? or will it go way over that?

if you can, props to you.
I wouldn't attempt a swap with less than $4k, $5k to be on the safe side.

like stated above.
MAD props if you can pull it off, but ALWAYS allocate $1k or so for random things that will go wrong, or that you over look. In general, unless you've got some amazing hookups, I wouldn't even attempt it with less than 5k. I know from experience.

Destructo are you putting the engine in yourself or
do you know someone who can help you?
That would save you a lot of money.
goodluck!

Im not even going to attempt it until I have $6,500...
Most likely next spring... But hey, if you can do it, go for it. Just not reccomendable.

I think you will go over that, you need piping for the IC, a fuel pump, possibly a clutch, hoses, downpipe... yes you can get by without these but you will probably not like the result later on.
I did my swap with about 5000.00 and I wish I had more money at the time to do some initial things, namely repaint the engine bay black.
Mine is a Red Top with an intake, exaust, downpipe, clutch, fuel pump, and all the other required stuff. I did not get new motor mounts, but luckily my stock ones weren't in too bad condition. I wish I had the money for those up front too. As well as a front mount and a higher flow catalitic converter.
It is fine to drive around with a bare bones swap, but I imagine it kind of defeats the purpose, wich is a high power car. For Three grand you could do a lot (turbo) to what you have right now, especially if its a DOHC.

no.
with 3k save up. if you are so itching to do a swap, save up for **** like clutch, pulleys new hoses. all the other small stuff but it adds up. have you thought of the downpipe/exhaust 3''? what about tune up parts, what if something faulty in the package you get? you get stuck with undrivable car and incomplete swap.
save up more money dude

thanks for the feed back. I was gonna tackle it with some friends and try to get it done in a weeks time. To save some money to rather than going to a shop. plus there isnt a dam shop in my area that would touch a sr swap or atleast none i know of, or trust to do it.

Don't forget to make sure the engine comes with an ignitor.
I can't tell you how many $100 - $200 auto parts store / home depot runs I did during my engine swap, little things like heat shrink tubing, wire, wire loom, clamps, bolts, oil, engine cleaner, etc. add up really fast.
Remember to account for the battery, if you go with a FMIC you will have to relocate the batter +$50 - $100.
Engine stand, engine hoist? $$$$

Yeah good question.. Always wanted to know how much "extra money" you should have saved up before getting a swap.. Wow.. an extra 1000 bucks.. Well good to know.

with 3,000 bucks, I'd turbo the KA. with support growing every day, its becoming easier than ever to do it. You can also bolt up the parts and have your car back on the road in a matter of hours if you know what you are doing.

My KA has got some miles to it so turboing it is out of the question.
thank you for the points about the little stuff. thats what I was wondering how much some of it would be.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but would it be pretty safe to attempt the swap with about $1000 set aside if I've already got all the parts I need for the swap (downpipe, clutch, exhaust, intake kit, turbo timer, etc.) or should I wait another month or so and save up $2000+?

well 3k is a good start.. but if i were u, i would aim for atleast 4500.. like everyone says ur gonna have to accomadate for all the things that can go wrong... Ive seen SR front clips going for 1700.. and that should have everything.. with the rest of money u could better the swap for performance or just get it to work...
good luck

Look harder for a cheaper sr20, i got a stripped one for $800, but I won't be using stock turbo, piping, or anything of that

You can do a complete swap for 1700 but you have to have mad skills.
