View Full Version : I hate raspy exhaust!

Currently I have an S13 SR with these exhaust components:
- 3" megan elbow
- 3" megan downpipe
- 3" piping all the way to the rear
- 2 resonators (one is a test pipe resonator, the other is on the mid-pipe)
- Magnaflow muffler w/ a 3" silencer

I have Isis blast pipes to swap out for track days, but I hate loud obnoxious exhaust noises while daily driving. I like to stay low key and I hate the attention loud exhaust attracts. Hence, my efforts in quieting my exhaust in the above list. Currently, it's pretty damn quiet but when I get on it it's raspy and buzzy as hell.

I'm currently running the stock T25 w/ a megan manifold @13PSI. I have a GT2860RS waiting to be slapped on. I plan on running the same amount of boost, so perhaps looking for the 250ish hp range. I also have a SAFC neo and enthalpy ECU for the turbo if that info helps.

In my last ditch effort in quieting this garbage, I'm thinking about shoving one of these puppies in the axle-back pipe of my exhaust.

What I'm shooting for: low key, low annoyance, fun S13.

The megan elbow and downpipe won't be causing the raspyness.

Tran, do you have any exhaust leaks?

Well, I got the manifold for $30 and I had to repair a broken weld. I also found good deals on the elbow and DP, paid about $100 for both. But whats the difference of a 3" pipe from the others?

Not trying to be a smart ass.... legitimate question, if there is really a difference.

No leaks. I know because I found a leak from a bad gasket. I checked the whole system after that.

get rid of those blast pipes in general and you'll be fine. they are terribly raspy

Magnaflow makes great stuff man! You gotta think everything is gong to b louder than a stock exhaust especially whn you are going with a full 3" system. I have a Apexi GT spec exhaust and I love it and its a 3 3/4" to 4". It has a deep tone to it so maybe you might want to go to a bigger cat-back. Take it to a muffler shop and have them cut everything out including to resonators and re-weld everything to 3.5 inch or bigger piping.....not sure if this helps. If you think about it from a musical stand point bigger drums and horns have deeper tones. Just like speakers too ;)

Try taking the silencer out sometimes they can buzz, I dunno doesn't seem like it should be bad with all the resonators and stuff on a turbo car, usually the loud raspy exhausts are found on straight pipe NA cars.

yea silencers are rasp central

low key and no rasp doesnt come together unless you stay stock exhaust in my opinion

blitz nurspec r catback is like the best of both worlds i think

I have a very similar setup;
SR T25 stock manifold
Megan: Elbow, Downpipe, Test Pipe
custom 2.25" exhaust, no resonators just a "turbo" Muffler at the end,
I have no rasp at all, and its very low key.

Hmm.
I have a 14 inch (I think) resonator, and Magnaflow muffler + all 3 inch piping on my KA-T and I have no rasp.

Is the test pipe resonator a quality one?
Try swapping it out for a regular testpipe or cat and see if that kills the rasp.

If you can find it, a Blitz Realize TT (i think titan motorsports still sells em) Zero rasp, sounds amazing at WOT. Almost stock DB at warm idle, but loud as hell when you get on it. Almost no drone and looks low key if you paint the piping lol.

Weld a stock s13 muffler on the end or put the stock exhaust system back on if you want it to be quiet. It's not rocket science...

Sell your shit buy a stock one you'll end up with cash and not posting your raspy exhaust problems on zilvia (you should know what youre putting in you're car) you tube it they usually have vids of certain exhausts in there
