So I picked up my 180sx vlsd this friday. Took it home, and got to work on saturday. Found out that i would have to swap drive axles also since the outputs are 5 bolt, and mine are 6 bolt. Not a problem since i bought the whole subrframe, but i had to go to work, aka got nothing done. Sunday i preceeded to remove the axles from the subframe which was a huge PITA since I was alone. Anyways, got the axle nuts and started pounding on the axles to get them out and preceeded to FUBAR the axles. They are so ****ted that I cant thread the axle nut back on... I am thinking about either griding down the fuct up part (its about 1/4" of thread that is fuct up, ending a few turns before the hole for the cotter pin), or trying to have a machine shop cut it off... any ideas?

any tips on how to hammer out the axles without fuking them up? Also, how do i hammer mine out when my car is on jackstands...doesnt sound too smart
it won't hurt to grind down a few threads off the end of the axle, there's so much room after you put the nut on that you could probably afford to grind off a good 1/2 inch if you REALLY had to.
To hammer it without damaging threads, try threading the axle nut on so the end is flush with the end of the axle, giving you a larger surface aread on which to hammer.
Don't forget the liberal application of PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench or similar. If this hammering (the bigger the mallet the better) doesn't work, your best bet would be to rent an anxle puller from Pep Boys/Autozone or Kragen. (AFAIK of these, Kragen is the only one who charges)
Good luck man! It's a bitch to do alone the first time!
If you have any more questions, I'd be more 'n' happy to answer what I can.

just go to autozone, and get a hub puller for free! You give them a $20 deposit, pull the axle, then take it back, and get your money back. :)
like this: http://ak.nextag.com/imagefiles/big/79/hub-puller-3431-56075779.jpg
The one in the top left is for pushing the axle out of the inside of the hub. The slide hammer in the lower right is for pulling the output shafts out of the diff.
If you have an impact wrench, the puller works like Butta', but if not, it still works, just takes a bit of muscle

Thanks...but how do i put the axles back in? Will they slide in easy enough that i wont need to hammer? I am guessing i can slide them in partially and just pull them out with the axle nut.

They slide in much easier than they come out. and yeah, I just used the axle nut to snug them up.

K cool...my friend works at a custom bike shop, i am going to see what he can do with the axle shafts. Otherwise i can get a pair for around $65 from a j30.

Just wondering, did you get the LSD from Dennis in the LA area (909)?

Yah...hes got a nice 510. Didnt get to meet him though, I bought it through his father.
Hey, I think dennis, at some point, was interested in my wheels. :) I have the exact same wheels as he does, except in 15". Anyway. That's a side note...
When you install your axles, clean up the splines if possible (rub a WD-40 soaked cloth along the splines) then either install it like that, or preferrably, apply some anti-seize before hammering that thing in. It'll make life a WHOLE lot easier for next time you need to pull your axles. :)
A friend of mine just ground down some threads at the end of some axles, and everything still went smoothly. If you have a dremel, it'll make life easier, but expect to spend a good hour or so, depending on how much grinding you have to do. With a file, give at least 3 hours. :o Since it's still on the car, consider having someone gas it a little to make your filing faster.

thanks very much!
I'm sorry, but that vlsd sticker is just.... .... ... horrible. Since the pic didn't work the first time I thought you were talking about the small orange one that goes on the pumpkin, and I thought "whatever" but now... I'm just thinking "showoff ricer!"

:stupid:
It's like having a "HICAS" or an "ABS" sticker, which is very unnecessary IMHO. Reminds me of older cars that have "16valve" or "DOHC" decals back in the day. Cheesy marketing scheme. And no, I'm not the kind of guy who favors shaved emblems all around so the car has no explicit identity. Sorry to digress from the original post..........
