Hey guys, I just removed my shift knob after about a week of off and on work trying to get it off. I tried to twist it counterclockwise but that just twisted the rubber boot so then i tried to use a pair of vice grips and that didn't work either(even when i had my bro hold one pair and turn the opossite way I was twisting so that the boot wouldn't twist). I began to think that it was welded on and nothing could take it off so then I tried again with vice grips and this time the leather came off and the rubber knob behind it was exposed and really sticky and kinda ripped from the vice grips. I kept rying and eventaully the rubber came off too exposing a metal knob. I just couldn't get it off no matter how hard i tired and i gave up for a couple days. It was terrible because it would get really hot and really cold. Eventually i realized i just had to get it off so i grabbed a reciprocating saw and went at it. after a few reapeated attempts and one broken blade it finally just gave way and twisted bought half way. so i just teisted the rest off to expose the treads i cut a bit of them up, but you can still tread something on, so i just bought a cheap univesal knob for a temporary fix but it began to rattle so i returned it and just used an extra one from a harbody truck we had lying around and it dont rattle around anymore. Well anyways I dont really want to buy a short throw shifter and was wondering if i could buy and oem just the black shaft anywhere becasue the wreckers around here dont have any or if theat shaft is the same as any other cars int eh nissan line up such as the nx2000 becasue they had one of those at the wrecker. Also if anyone could tell me what size the thread diameter of the oem knob is that would be muchly appreciated, Regardless to say I would have rather not even touched the knob had i known this was going to happen as I need a new boot now too. Removing the 240sx shift knob is total :bs: compared to other knobs that i have removed.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated thanks.

I say leave the shift knob off and put a tennis ball there... like what some ppl do with the antennas. From what I heard its comfortable .

yah...the 240 shift knob is BS... hack saw, vice grip, and 3 big 200lb guys is how much it took to get mine off... it was glued on there.

YES! Our knobs are notoriously hard to take off. Most people I KNOW have trouble taking it off. So did I. It took alot of Elbow Grease and raw bestly power. Sucks to hear you put so much work into yours though.

hmm... that's strange. my shifter is easy to take off too. screws on and screws off. but its a bit loose when aligned properly. if i screw it on all the way it ends up upside down. oh well :P
95 240sx btw

yea mine is upside down if i screw it down all the way. so right now theres a tiny tiny gap between it and the boot.
i had no idea our cars are notorious for this. before this thread, i only know of one guy with this problem. it was at some meet last month, i tried so hard to take the shift knob off, but my awesome sheer strength was humbled  :D

Use a pipe wrench to get the shift knob off. It will ruin it though. If you put the new one on, and it ends up backwards, just put a little piece of cardboard inside (from a matchbook). It will act as a spacer and compress down to keep it tight and facing the right direction. I tend to use easy (ghetto) solutions unless it would be noticible.

that cardboard thing is a great idea. i was actually going to go buy a aftermarket shifter b/c the slipping pissed me off too much. thanks for saving me $50 bucks and a ricier interior. :D

I think you guys are a bunch of pus sies. Drop and give me 20 for complaining about this. (Cue Old Guy Voice)Back during the war, we used to use our GI Joe kung fu grip on our s13 shift knobs or we would tell the POWs to sit on it and twist. JK.
Never was in the war and mine came off easy for some reason.

holy whining about a stupid shift knob, Batman!
If i whined this much about everything that was the slightest bit difficult as far as my car is concerned, i could fill up a forum.
But I don't!

My knob required a bench vise, and vise grips to remove it. Its simply because nissan is built to last, never fall apart, and the **** knob is part of that criteria;)
