Hey Zilvia,
I am in need of advice because I am thinking about buying a s14 zenki for 6.5k. I am 19 as of tomorrow and I play baseball for my college. I am currently making around 1300 dollars a month, but when the season starts next year i will only be making around 1000. So my question is, will I be able to afford the up keep of a zenki, like if anything breaks on it.. I dont really know because I have never owned one, but you guys out there that do, keep in mind that its a 1996 stock motor 120k on the ka24de. with my so called, "income" would I be able to afford it... I know this is such a vague question, but any help/advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
zak
edit: I forgot to say that this will strictly be a daily driver.. no drifting or racing, but maybe getting sideways a few times when it rains ;)

Any 240 is relatively easy/cheap to maintain, especially with a stock motor. They tend to be the most reliable. If you plan on using the car for a commuter as well as auto x or drifting on the weekends or whatever you can expect things to break.

Are you buying the car out rite when you go get it? Like your not making payments? Then yes you can afford it no problem. 240s are very easy/cheap to keep maintained and running strong. If its a daily to get you back and forth and your not beating on it then itll last you forever. $1000 a month will allow you to keep it maintained easy. But fair warning, as soon as you start wanting to use it as more than a daily, then you can exspect to break stuff.
The car will only be a money pit if you make it a money pit. Dont drive it like an asshole and youll be fine.

yes, just keep the ka and do regular maintinence on it. dont try to "drift" it like every other 19-20 year old who owns a 240 and youll be fine.

If you are paying $6.5K for a an old s14 zenki. Then just die. LOL jk. Seriously, do you know they sell for around $2000-$3000 average. I just sold a nice s14 for $2k, all stock. I bought if for $1.4K.
Biggest advice is learn the value of a damn stock zenki s14. Shitty paint/body= $~2K. Good condition paint/body= $~3K absolutely more then $~4k, even if its SE.

Yeah the car was exactly like the one he owned back in the day though that and the fact its showroom worthy made it worth it to him. He didnt want a kouki.
Its all about what someone wants and is willing to pay to get it.

I've had my s14 for bout 8 months n its had alota of stupid issues but nothing that really diasables the car.it can get expensive if u take it to a mechanic but if u do ur own work u will b fine..I went thru both sides inner n outter tie rods, fuel pump, broken 5 zigens, brakes, rewire the kouki lights..not to mention the large list of upgrades lol

I have had my 240 since 2004. Pulled it out of a junkyard with a blown motor. Payed 1500 for the car and 500 for a used, roughly 100K motor. I have daily driven it every since, the only thing I have had to replace was the fuel pump. The only big thing is that I cant keep a set of tires on it. Very inexpensive if you decide to just daily drive it. The body has close to 250K and its still holding together awesome!

I would not put that car 3k above going rate because it has wheels and coilovers. Don't go anywhere near that welded diff he has for it. If that's installed before purchase, Remove it and throw it off an overpass. If you're willing to spend what he's asking, Then buy the car, I personally wouldn't spend that much.

This guy makes a great point, a welded for a daily is going to suck bad. Plus the car being that low is going cause clearance issues for you everyday. Sure it looks pretty but i guarantee its bottomed out multiple times and has issues. Plus that was someone elses project/headache. Do you really want to take on what someone else has started and wants a mint for? That car is 15 years old and has probably been that low for teh last couple if not more.
If you want a reliable daily, that car isnt the way to go. Your looking for something more on the stock side then slammed. Definately is a bad ass zenki tho
If it were me, id give him $4000 for it, and thats top dollar.

Try to talk him down a bit, The car is clean but it isn't worth that kinda money. he's trying to justify the price of the car by the upgrades made. I'd say 4,000-4,500 Would be ideal. Either way good luck with your purchase, Upkeep on our cars is pretty basic and rather cheap. Just do the work yourself.

Dont get me wrong, if it was that clean i would have dropped a penny on it too.

Hey guys I thank you all for your input! I am looking for something aesthetically pleasing. This car fits my goal of what I want mine to look like. I'll talk him down a bit but this is my dream car. Lol everybody makes fun bc it's my dream car rather than a Lamborghini.... Anyways I'll try and get it for 4-5000. Once again I thank you all for taking the time to help me.

Do what makes you happy, if you have the money to blow, and dont mind over paying for it, then go for it.

I haven't read the post, but looking at the picture it's not original paint.
1 thing you should look out for, is the body. People that crash, put tons of body filler (too much body filler cracks down the road, usually over couple of months if too thick or not done right). Also if it's a cheap paint job, every inch of that car will start to flake off. Usually cheap paint is good for 2years, I think from what I seen. I just want to make sure you understand what your dealing with here. Say he painted this like year ago, and now in a few months the paint will start flaking off, it will no longer look clean and you will be regretting your purchase.

i have been putting thought into it and if it happens, then its meant to be but if not, owell. and i was talking to him he said the lowest is 6.5k so not gunna happen. but ya i would definitely check the car out before buying it. this guy has only had it for a couple months so it makes me wonder why he is trying to get rid of it already ya know what i mean..

Here is another car you can get. He asking $9K, but I'm sure he will be ok with 7-8k. Your spending only $1500 more, but you get much more in return. And it's Turbocharged.

Car looks clean as a daily, your budget seems fair if you dont have much other bills & so forth
also cars upkeep depends on how you treat it you know what i mean? You gotta think about weather or not you plan on doing anything else to it as well & seems like it has a bit of camber too so tires can get pricy depending on how much you drive & so forth but only you can tell yourself if you can do it man. PM me if you have more questions & what not and GL
