That doesn't really help him out, I am sure he realized that. I would say take apart the plastic cover that goes around your steering wheel and see if you can see any wire shorting out, and if nothing, I would take the cluster out. I don't know if you can go without the car for long so I would say take a day where you don't have to go anywhere and take the dash out because you will need to do that to get the cluster out. Then you can check connections on the cluster itself and look for the wiring from you turn signal to see if you have any pinched wires or grounding anywhere to create possible a spark, making the smoke. Food for thought.
Good luck man!

yeah pull the ignition shroud off and see whats up. You could have burned some plastic/insulation in a short.
Get it checked out soon
removing the cluster is seriously like 10 bolts, it is not hard at all, just be slow about it and DROP THE STEERING COLUMN
its 4 bolts to do that, it saves a head ache/cracked interior pieces

i took everything off an hour ago like the plastic cover over the steering wheel and was messing with the turn signals and no smoke was coming out but i turn the key to the on position and it turns out something is shorting in my turn signal thingy lol smoke came out when i signaled for a right turn but really couldn't figure out where the smoke was coming from. i know for a fact it wasn't coming from the dash.
