It's been almost 4 years since I've owned my car now, and it's time to share the ever evolving process of my car from start to finish. I've accomplished a lot with this car, and yet at the same time, there's still so much more left to do!
First let me start off by saying I bought my first 240sx in January of 2007.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/white240/10-11-07_1740.jpg
It was a pretty nice start for me... until the inevitable happened...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/white240/accident/11-05-07_1133.jpg
I tried to kick the rear end out on a round-about and over-corrected 2 or 3 times before I popped the curb and side swiped a tree. Really sucks because that same week I was about to drop in my freshly rebuilt SR20DET... But the story continues!
A week later I decided I needed to buy another 240sx and fast. I had an SR awaiting transplant and now no car to drive. So I went online and searched furiously for another car. I was looking for a shell originally but ended up snatching up a nice 1990 hatch 5spd from a user here on Zilvia.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/orig/100_1113.jpg
I ended up selling my white 240sx to my friend after taking all the parts I wanted from it. He decided to turn it into his track slut.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/white240/dd6osw/%281506%29.JPG
However that was short lived. Drifting was expensive and he needed money. So he parted pretty much everything out of it and then off to the junkyard it went...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/white240/theend2.jpg
But enough with this sad story crap. Time for the real story! I've got a car to build.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/srswap/112-1232_img.jpg
The beloved KA24E, sorry but after 132,000 miles its time was up.

The new heart. Fully rebuilt SR20DET to stock specs w/ S15 pistons. Bling.

Getting things hooked up, little by little.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/srswap/Img_1383.jpg
I think shes ready!
Drove around for a couple months on the stock SMIC. Eventually I had enough of it and needed a front mount! (as well as a lightweight battery)
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/srswap/Img_1408.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/srswap/Img_1409.jpg
For the most part my car looked like this...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/cw/Img_1372.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/cw/Img_1373.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/cw/Img_1374.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/cw/Img_1375.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/cw/Img_1376.jpg
300zx wheels, and the S13 chuki front end from my white 240sx. I pretty much drove the car like this fixing things here and there.
Then... it happened... Yes, IT happened. I got into an accident! Nothing major thankfully, but a retarded situation. I was on my way home from work driving on the highway. It was raining, and I was probably driving 10mph under the speed limit, so roughly 55mph. Anyways, this person forgets to get off on their exit and comes to a complete stop on the road and attempts to turn around to get onto the exit. Well the person traveling behind the idiot slammed on her brakes, and thus caused me to slam on mine. Good ole non-ABS decided to lock up and with tires that needed replacement, I didn't make it.
However, the damage wasn't bad. I managed to slide and give the van in front of me a little love tap. The guy that originally stopped took off, so I ended up being at fault for the lady's van. The good news is, her van had ZERO damage. Here's what happened to my car...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/accident/IMAG0162.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/accident/IMAG0166.jpg
Not bad at all really. But, it was enough for me to say "Screw this. It's time for that ESSS FIFFFTAIN!!!"
So my planning began. I already had purchased an OEM S15 bumper w/ Trust Gracer lip from Drift Freaq back when I was swapping in my SR20...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/s15coming.jpg
The damn thing was sitting in my room for a long time. But I always kept it as an incentive to keep my original plan and go with the S13.5 and I did.
I decided that since I was upgrading to a front end from '99-'02. I would also need newer wheels to reflect the change. The 300zx wheels were too early 90ish for the S15 front end, so I opted to get 17" 350z wheels.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0019.jpg
Carbon fiber VIS hood, lights mounted and 350z wheels in check!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0031.jpg
Bumper mounted temporarily with some zipties.
I had everything in check except for the fenders. I decided to try out the fiberglass conversion route due to my lack of funds creeping up on me. And as you can imagine the fitment sucked ass. I am definitely going the S13.5 metal conversion route once I get some other things fixed on my car first. Since its just cosmetic it can wait.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0042.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0043.jpg
Jank fitment.
But eventually I got over it and spray bombed it all so that I wouldn't be rollin' down the street looking like a tuxedo lol...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0044.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0052.jpg
And you can't forget the ever-popular lightning bolt S. Zap!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/s15conv/IMAG0056.jpg
I like this picture, but the lack of aero bothers me so. Do I smell kouki 180sx? :faint:
At this point I was pretty much broke, so I decided to do little tasks with my car.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/clusterevive.jpg
Threw some LEDs into my gauge cluster.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/newplatemounted.jpg
LED license plate lights, Nismo frame, and a nice new shiny vanity plate :)
So yeah, onto that kouki 180sx aero...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/kouki/IMAG0139.jpg
First thing I bought was the side skirts.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/kouki/imag0265z.jpg
Next came the tail lights. :)
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/kouki/IMAG0319.jpg
And then finally the rear valances. Decided to keep it wingless, so don't suggest I throw a kouki wing on it to make it more "legit". :whip:
So heres my car as it sits right now...

Yay, time for an update!
Finally got my Hicas steering rack, tein tie rods, and FA tension rods installed. I was completely exhausted after all this and wasn't in the mood to snap good pictures, plus it was dark so quality on these is out the door, please forgive me beforehand lol.

Have you done rear ball joints? I have been having all kinds of issues trying to get replacements for mine. Found some at Auto Zone, but they were wrong, and every other place I try says you have to buy the control arms with them, I say ok, then they say "Oh, we cannot order those either". I am not really looking for forking out cash for tubular ones.....

I got my control arms from PDM Racing. You can get the rear lower control arms with ball joints from them as well.

Update time!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0039.jpg
My new front rotors and pads came in today. Originally intended for this to be a quick brake job but then I decided to paint my calipers red. :D
Let me say though, I'm glad I got this stuff replaced as soon as I did. It turns out the rotors I was using were not the correct size. I'm not sure what car they are off of, but they are bigger than S14 5lug rotors but smaller than 26mm 300zx rotors... Take a look...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0043.jpg
On the left is the mysterious rotor which measured out to be 21mm in width. On the right is the new 26mm 300zx rotor. Kinda hard to tell from the picture but there is a noticeable size difference. Anyone know what the 21mm mysterious rotor is from???
Here is a picture of the 21mm rotor next to the S14 5lug rotor.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0049.jpg
S14 5lug rotor on the left, 21mm ??? rotor on the right.
Anyways, after I made that discovery it was time to get old brake pads off and the brake calipers cleaned up.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0040.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0041.jpg
This is the boring inefficient setup.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0042.jpg
Old pads on the left, new pads on the right.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0045.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0046.jpg
Who said 300zx calipers don't grow on trees???
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0047.jpg
Mmmm, them apples is ready for pickin'!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0048.jpg
Sanded off the lettering, ended up nicking the caliper with sandpaper a few times had to go back and do some touch up spraying (damn I'm lame).
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0050.jpg
Driver side mounted. I definitely should have let these dry over night, they got a few blemishes from me handling them.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0051.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0052.jpg
Picture without the light... damn my phone sucks hardcore. Sorry guys.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0053.jpg

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/front/IMAG0055.jpg
And now I have shiny red calipers peaking behind the 350z rims. :)
Overall, I'm very impressed with my stopping force. I thought I was braking ok but now having the Hawk HPS pads and the PROPER size rotors, when I think about stopping, she's already in a nose dive. Can't wait to complete the whole package when I do the z32 rear calipers.
That's all for now. More to come in the future.
Thanks for reading. :2f2f:

Looking good bud, gonna do the rears soon?
Next up...
- R200 VLSD swap
- New subframe bushings + other bushings
- Z32 rear brake setup
- Gas tank cleansing + new fuel lines
- New rear lower control arms
- New catback exhaust
Gonna do it all at once so it'll be a big update. Probably going to swap the VLSD into a spare s13 pumpkin on Monday.

Small update.
Last week I went to the junkyard with a friend to snatch up some 5 bolt axels from a J30 that he needed for his VLSD. While he was removing the last remaining bolts I decided I would look around the yard for any other J30's. After a few minutes of searching low and behold... a black J30. When I got up close to it I saw a '97 with a circle around it. My heart started beating faster, I couldn't believe it! (I've been looking for the 6bolt setup for awhile). I immediately look under the car and BAM! the pumpkin was still there albeit a little rusty. We didn't have time that particular day to pull the pumpkin out so we went back a few days later...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0058.jpg
J30 VLSD, knocked the output shafts out.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0059.jpg
The work area I guess, lol. J30 VLSD exposed, s13 pumpkin behind it.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0060.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0061.jpg
Open differential (left), J30 VLSD (right).
I decided that I wanted to maintain my final gear ratio and use the stock 49:12 (4.08) ratio ring gear. I wouldn't recommend going this route unless you are familiar with grinding because you will have to grind down the longer output shaft to make up for the skinnier ring gear once its set in the pumpkin. Probably a little easier to swap on the J30 pumpkin and buy an ABS driveshaft!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0062.jpg
J30 VLSD + 49:12 ring gear from s13 open diff
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0063.jpg
After a little persuasion, she seats into the pumpkin nicely.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0066.jpg
This is the longer output shaft that needs to be grinded down IF you decide to use the open diff ring gear. The grinding area is from the red line down, and then must be tapered up slightly from there.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0067.jpg
Workbench. Dremel and a couple hours of taking my time.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0068.jpg
I was so excited after I finished I completely forgot to snap a picture of the grind job. Once I banged it in there and it fit perfectly I decided to leave it in. Sorry guys.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0069.jpg
I had a hell of a time razor blading the OEM paper gasket off, it was fused to the aluminum or something. I soaked it in purple power for a day, put goo gone all over it... and eventually had to use sand paper to get a smooth finish. BUT, its all together now, waiting to be transplanted on the car.
That's all for now. :)

Quick update regarding my car:
Was driving home tonight from a friends house, I decided to give it a little throttle around a turn and as the revs increased I wasn't getting any power to the wheels (felt like clutch slippage) and I was hearing this rattling sound. I'm 99% sure it was the sound of the flywheel bolts backing out. So now the car is parked and going to be pulling the transmission to check out the damage.
All other parts sans my new HKS exhaust have been ordered. Looks like I'm also going to upgrade my clutch in the process.
Stay tuned for the carnage!

Well, I started a little bit of the break down process tonight. Took off my exhaust. It's now sold. Anyways, decided to snap a few pictures of the disgusting state of my rear end situation.
Below are the pictures of my subframe bushing gap. All four corners have about 1/4" of separation. It's horrible, do not look if you have a weak stomach.

And finally...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0112.jpg
Fuel lines leading up to the gas tank are cracked. FML.
This is just a small sample of things to be replaced. I'm sure it'll get a lot deeper the more I get into it.

Mini update.
My flywheel bolts were loose. ALL eight of them. 4 were finger loose and 4 were loose enough to use the wrench with almost zero effort.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/drivetrain/IMAG0120.jpg
Picture right after taking the clutch off. Can't tell that the bolts are loose in this picture but they were.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/drivetrain/IMAG0121.jpg
Backside of the flywheel. Notice the bolt holes are no longer perfect circles due to the bolts carving them out. There's even thread marks inside the flywheel holes from the bolts... lol.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/drivetrain/IMAG0122.jpg
Here's a picture of the pilot bushing. If you look at the bottom right section its completely burred into the housing. FML!
The clutch seems to be ok, but its got around 30,000 miles on it so I'm going to replace it. Rear main seal is leaking so that also will need to be replaced.
More pictures when new parts arrive + install procedure.

Random picture of the tranny on the ground.

Heres what the flywheel did to the crank, had to sand it down and smooth it out. Rear main and housing also off in this picture.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/drivetrain/IMAG0133.jpg
Front transmission cover removed. Backside all cleaned up.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/drivetrain/IMAG0134.jpg
Front cover back on with new front gasket and seal. No pivot ball installed in this picture, but I got an SPL one.
Anyways, when my clutch arrived it was go time. But as usual my car doesn't get work done to her until she puts up a fight, and she did. This time, I was attempting to center the pressure plate onto the flywheel tightening down two bolts at the opposite end of each other. One side went in fine, but the other had a lot more stress trying to pull the pressure plate onto the flywheel... Needless to say, the bolt popped out and took some aluminum threads from the Fidanza flywheel with it... FML. Lucky for me, it wasn't that bad so it was helicoil to the rescue!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/drivetrain/IMAG0137.jpg
Flywheel with the helicoil in there.
I was able to take my car out for a drive around the neighborhood for a good 15 minutes. No leaks so far. No grinds or any tranny noise whatsoever. What sucks is I sold my exhaust a couple weeks ago so I can't really drive it out on the roads like I want to (open test pipe=loud).

My car is finally back on the road in one piece! Got everything installed I set out to do. Had some troubles with the z32 ebrake setup and a minor issue with the exhaust install...

New lower rear control arms and z32 rotors / hawk pads.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0164.jpg
Z32 2+2 cables installed with brackets mounted.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0165.jpg
These are what my fuel lines looked like that went from the tank to the hard lines in the back. Crackkkk city.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0166.jpg
New fuel lines installed. Ah, sigh of relief.
So, my first attempt at driving the car wasn't exactly perfect. Every time I would go to engage the ebrake I would hear a clunking sound and it wouldn't lock at all if I was in motion. It would lock if I was stopped, but even then it wasn't locking full strength. So I had to pull everything off and see what the deal was.
Turns out, Z32 hubs are little different than s14/ichiba conversion 5 lug hubs... They have a flange that goes in between the ebrake hardware and the back plating...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/z32rhubs.jpg
Red arrow indicates the flange tab part of the z32 hub that is absent from s-chassis based hubs. So to counter this, I used a spare axle washer.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0173.jpg
Axle washer in between the back plating, thus mimicking the presence of the z32 flange.

HKS Hi-Power Exhaust (85mm).
I had a little issue with clearance with the muffler tip. It's crazy big compared to my old Apexi N1 so it was hitting up against the tow hook. Pretty much bent the piss out of it in order for it to clear without hitting.
Well that's it for now. I'll get pictures of the exhaust on the car tomorrow when it's daylight out.

Upgraded my tail/brake lights to LED. Overall I'm very happy. No more dimming of electrical system when brakes are applied (like all s13's I've ever been in). And my idle no longer drops when braking. I have a video comparison although my video camera sucks ass and makes the LEDs look weak when they are just as bright if not brighter than the stock bulbs.

Not much going on with the build. I'm still saving up for coilovers and with holiday season around the corner I should be able to get more hours at work. :)
In the meantime I've purchased a few goodies for my car to "spice" up the interior. S15 steering wheel and S15 spec-R floormats that I have been looking to get for YEARS!

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/IMAG0216.jpg
In order to get the horn and turn signal cancellation mechanism to work properly with the S15 wheel I had to cut the plastic pieces from the back side of the S13 wheel and RTV it onto the S15 wheel. Overall wasn't a hard process just a little time consuming making sure everything fits good. I also removed the airbag (not the actual bag but the part that explodes lol) just for safety reasons.
I also decided to replace my clutch master and slave cylinder. Pedal engagement was getting softer and the clutch would engage differently all the time. Tried to get rid of the black gunk by draining out the old fluid and putting in new but no matter what the new fluid would turn black instantly.

Looking great man, I love all the maintenance things while your upgrading as you go.
One of the rare well built 240's in florida. Sadly most people here worry about "moar low, hella flush" crap instead of building a functional car. Keep up the good work, I have been following this build for months so keep the updates coming.

I hate not updating my thread. My family has been having some financial troubles as of late so I've been helping them out which means my funds for coilovers are temporarily on hold. However, I did manage to pick up some minty fresh S14 seats for a cool $100.

I'd like to exercise the idea that good things come to those who wait. Well, I've been waiting for close to around 4 years tentatively looking for my dream wheels. I finally found them I had to drive 6 hours to meet a fellow Zilvia member in ATL. They need a little TLC but that is what I'm all about!

Nismo LMGT4 by Rays. 17 inch! 17x8.5 +30, and 17x9.5 +38. Every time I would search for these rims they are always in the 18 or 19 inch option, which I don't think suits the s13 too well. I'm planning on restoring these and painting them mercury silver.
I'd like some feedback for those who read this, thanks! :)

The long trip to Atlanta destroyed the seals on my turbo finally. Before the trip a little bit of oil would seep into the coolant over time from the seals, but now it seems much more apparent. Going to drop in another T25 and redo all the gaskets as well as upgrade to steel braided lines.

Not planning on keeping the car black. If things go as planned I will be painting the car this summer. More details on the color in a couple months when I actually construct it using the combination of two OEM Nissan paints. :)

Driving 6 hours to Atlanta in back took a toll on my carbon fiber hood. At constant 80mph speeds, it was flapping around pretty good and I was a little worried it would fly off at times. When I finally got home I inspected it further and sure enough there was some hairline cracks starting to form at the latch. So you know what that means...
Aerocatch Install!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/aerocatch/IMAG0298.jpg
Took the hardware right out and started playing with it... Haha.
Now in order to mark the correct spots I wanted, I put the hood pins where I wanted them to be along the radiator support, spread some touch up paint on the top of the pin and closed the hood down until it touched. This marked the spot that I would use to drill the first hole through the hood.

Holes drilled.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/aerocatch/IMAG0306.jpg
Stencil taped up in the exact location I needed it to be. The alignment point here is parallel to the hood's inner lines. To me this seemed to keep it looking sleek and not too tacky.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/aerocatch/IMAG0307.jpg
Traced and ready to be cut.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/aerocatch/IMAG0308.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/aerocatch/IMAG0309.jpg
Cut it out perfectly. Although there was the bottom layer that I also had to cut from the underside of the hood so I could mount the housing properly.
The driver side pretty much went smooth as butter. The passenger side however (which always seems to be the problem side for everything I do) was being difficult. I had to fabricate up a bracket, do a lot of pounding and bent the hoodpin itself slightly to make it line up properly. A little sloppy, but it's 100% functional.

Yeah, once you make the first "incision", you're pretty much committed after that, hah!
The way I look at it is this, either I keep running the stock latch and risk my hood flying off and possibly causing me or someone else on the road to have an accident OR I cut into my expensive hood for added protection.
There really is no other choice. If I had it my way I would want an aluminum OEM style hood.

Dude I am loving your build to bits! I draw many simularities with my (also black) 180sx and your build gives me much inspiration for my 1/2 complete soon to be also s13.5!
Let me say though, I'm glad I got this stuff replaced as soon as I did. It turns out the rotors I was using were not the correct size. I'm not sure what car they are off of, but they are bigger than S14 5lug rotors but smaller than 26mm 300zx rotors... Take a look...
S14 5lug rotor on the left, 21mm ??? rotor on the right.
I'm gonna guess a worn 95 gen maxima rotor? They are the same size as 180sx/altima rotors except 5 lug and 180sx/altima/maxima rotors all measure at 22mm thick with a 11" diameter. I am converting my 180sx to 5 lug, after much research I pull the trigger on a set of maxima rotors and they drop right into my 180sx endless calipers.
Thanks! You'll hear a lot of criticism from the community about the S13.5 but we all know its the hottest s-chassis conversion! I mean cmon, best front end + best rear end = best of the best. :)

Rode in this car last week, keep up the good work bud.
Thanks Trevor.
I've decided NOT to powder coat my wheels. I've read from too many sources that powder coating forged aluminum wheels could jeopardize the integrity of the alloy. Most powder coating temps need to reach around 400F degrees. I know they do make a lower temp powder coat, but as far as I know RAYS doesn't powder coat any of their wheels, so I'm not going to either.
With that said, I've decided on a wheel color which seems pretty close to Mercury Silver and is OEM Nissan official!
http://my350z.com/forum/picture.php?pictureid=2862
Chrome Silver Metallic (KY0). Which was also the silver for the R34 Z-Tune.
Can't wait. Just gotta get my funds up so I can get the wheels fixed and then buy all the paint supplies. Oh yeah, I'll be painting these myself (with the help of my friend who works at a body shop).

Fuel pump has progressively gotten worse over time. I checked my fuel pressure the other day and it was idling at 32psi when it should be around 38psi. Currently the car is parked and I'm waiting for a new Walbro pump. I also bought a Nismo adjustable fuel pressure regulator, new z32 OEM filter and of course the gasket o-ring for the tank.
A minor set back, but not too big of a deal. I'm also going to siphon the gas out of the tank and see how dirty this thing is, if its bad I might impulse buy a new tank. :)

All the supplies that arrived yesterday from FedEx. Just got done installing everything, car runs like a champion now. Walbro pump is SILENT. Can't even hear it like my last one that would scream after 10 minutes. Fuel pressure steady at 44psi with vacuum off, 38psi when vacuum is plugged in.
I examined the tank, honestly wasn't too bad. Yeah there is a little residue caked on the bottom but nothing floating around in the tank or anything. The wiring connections on the fuel pump to the Walbro from before were also loose so I cleaned them up, installed fresh wire and made sure it was on there TIGHT.
Feels good to be driving again. :2f2f:

Next up: Tires!!!
I put in an order for Yokohama S.Drive's. I've heard good things about these tires so I wanted to try them out. I usually buy BFG KDW2's which are great tires too, so we shall see how they compare.
225/45/17 front on 8.5 inch wheel.
255/40/17 rear on 9.5 inch wheel.

My Firestone got a new manager that really sucks on ticket/time management. Not going to wait 3hrs for a 15min re-align. The other one uses a laser rack... It's always good to drive a little bit for better service.

Yeah it use to be like that for me... once upon a time LOL. Everytime they see me, my car is up on the rack within 20 minutes. If there is no car currently on the rack I usually cut right ahead of whoever is next. :)

Sometimes the little modifications you do to your car are just as rewarding as the big ones. As S13 owners we all know how much of a nuisance it can be without a cup holder. All the options I've ever seen place the cup holder in the center console region which I never liked. My arm / hand / elbow etc would always hit the cup in some way shape or form, especially when shifting.
Anyways, randomly sitting in my car one day trying to plan out my interior, I was thinking of a location where a cup holder would be ideal and not get in the way. After a few minutes the location was obvious. Couple weeks later a thread on Zilvia popped up in regards to cup holders and it just reaffirmed my conclusion. So without further rambling...
This cup holder is made in Germany by Fischer.

Baha Blast Mountain Dew! Cup holder held on tight like a champion. Supposedly it can hold up to 16lbs so this thing is built very well.
I would recommend anyone with an S13 with power window door panels to buy at least one. You could also put one on the driver side but my legs tend to occupy that area at times.

Finally installed a DIF fan controller for my Altima fans. Originally I had my stock A/C switch to trigger the fans via relay, but I noticed a bit of over-cooling due to the fact that my idle would start to rise to around 900-1000rpm.
I began installing the controller just how it says on the instructions but I soon noticed a little note at the bottom of the page...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0415.jpg
I'm not sure how many amps the Altima fans pull at high speed, but I have a good feeling its more than 12A. So I decided to use the fan output as a trigger to a set of 30A Bosch relays.

05-08-2012, 08:50 PM
So I've come to the conclusion that my car is a bitch. Throughout the years I've noticed how even the smallest of tasks end up turning into annoying problems. Despite her constant bitch status, she has only left me stranded once in over 5 years... (and that was my fault for ignoring a bad alternator for too long).
Initially I had planned to do the battery relocate + Nissan Quest alternator upgrade at the same time. But the latter would not happen.
** cody if you're reading this 3/8" drill bit was too small for my SR alternator bolt, 7/16" is the correct size. **
I've read countless times on how to perform the alternator conversion and I bought codyace's kit. Drilled the holes out to 7/16" and figured I'd be good to go... Wrong. I go to mount the alternator up and everything appeared to line up perfect, but when I went to put the bolt through the bottom bracket, it would hit the back steel insert. No problem, just needs some persuasion... but I forgot, I'm dealing with my car. LOL. Needless to say, I tried 20 thousand different methods to try to get this bolt to go all the way through, no dice. The bolt goes through fine outside of the car, but when I apply it to the car's bracket, the bolt doesnt go through! :duh:
So I took it out and decided the steel insert wasn't drilled perfectly so I popped my SR alternator insert out and put it in the Quest alternator. Go to put it back on the car, same problem! I couldn't believe it. Over 2 hours spent trying to get this damn bottom bolt through trying different methods.
The end result: I'm back to using my SR alternator (which has nothing wrong with it).
But! The good part of this story is I relocated my brand new Optima Yellow Top to the back. All I have to say is WOW, what a difference. My car starts right up, and my headlights must be at least 3x brighter than they use to be on the old battery. I'm never using a dinky ass battery again.
Now onto some pictures...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0445.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0431.jpg
I bought the JEGS battery relocation kit, came with all the supplies I needed to do a relocation. I ended up cutting it up and making it smaller because the Optima was nowhere near the size of this box.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0447.jpg
Here's the location I placed it at. Behind the passenger, this was before I did anything to it, I just placed it there to show where it resides.
For the most part I was just preparing all the connections with proper linkage so I could bolt it all together.
Since I thought I would be using the Quest alternator I saw that the bolt thread was a bit larger in diameter than the stock SR alternator cable end...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0442.jpg
So I had to use these 8-10AWG circle terminal thingies.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0443.jpg
Crimped and ready to go, like a baus.
Now its a good thing I was using my brain at certain points during the installation because the main reason why I didn't want to relocate the battery to the far back was in fear of drilling into the tank. So at my location, I was sure to be safe from this. Not quite. Before drilling I measured where underneath my car I would need to place holes, and sure enough, two of them were directly in the fuel lines / brake line track. LOL. So I was glad I caught this because I would have been PISSED if I get out of my car to a puddle of gas and brake fluid mixture...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0448.jpg
Here's a little piece of wood to prevent me from doing something dumb.
After getting everything mounted all that was left was to route the positive cable to the front. I went under the carpet and up to the ECU harness plug in the firewall. Initially I was going to drill a hole through it but I was way too paranoid that I would tear into all the wires there... So I did the ghetto half ass job and cut up a chunk of the plug big enough for the cable to fit through...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0452.jpg
Oh yeah and for extra safety I wedged a rubber grommet on top of it so it wouldn't rub against the metal. :)
Here's a picture of drilling into the Quest alternator...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0449.jpg
Honestly, I think the front hole is not centered correctly to begin with. I think I may try using a 1/2" drill bit and boring it out more. But as of right now I'm going to hold off on the Quest unit until my SR alternator starts to go... We shall see...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0450.jpg
Everything all connected. Yes I know I have wires going everywhere. It may look like a disaster but its a very controlled disaster LOL... I'm planning on cleaning up all the wiring when I strip the engine bay down for paint (which means everything is getting removed) but that won't be for awhile.
Sorry for the long post but thats what happens when you do 22 hours of car work and only get 2 hours of sleep.
:2f2f:
edit:
And the finished product...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/engine/IMAG0453.jpg
As you can see I used one of the backseat bolt holes to ground to chassis. The positive cable goes behind that rear body panel and then down the side underneath the carpet to the ECU area and up to the firewall.
edit2:
Cut a slot into the carpeting so I could lay it down over the mounts and then the battery on top of that for a little bit more cleaner look, even though the battery box isn't too visually appealing lol...

I have nothing extra in my car, not even AC. I know its a bit overkill but I wanted to go all out. For too many years now I've been dealing with sub-par batteries, it was time for a change. I had a RedTop before switching to an FMIC and it was fine as well.

Well, you guys know me. As I continue to save up for my coilovers + rear suspension links, I decided to tackle another little project I've been meaning to do.
*** Wireless Trunk Release ***
I installed power door locks on my car as soon as I bought it so I could utilize the Viper alarm lock/unlock feature. And when I bought my kouki 180sx tail lights I said to myself that there is no way in hell I'm carrying another key just for the trunk. Which was not a problem for me because my manual lever works fine.
However, it wasn't until last week when I was buying groceries (something I rarely do) and I had a few bags in my hand and in the other hand holding onto my Nissan key when it dawns on me... This key can't open my trunk. Herp a fucking derp. So I have to proceed to unlock my door, open the door pull the lever (with bags in hand) and then pull the trunk up. Pretty lame right? Yeah I thought so too...
So I bought the DEI 522t trunk release kit.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0458.jpg
(Bosch relay not included)
Now this isn't necessarily a hard install, but it will take a few hours if you want to do it right and hide the wires as best as possible.
The first thing I needed to do was to inspect the trunk latch mechanism.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0459.jpg
The manual wire you can see I've highlighted yellow, you will want the solenoid to mount from this direction (right side). Red arrow indicates where your new wire from the solenoid will be going.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0460.jpg
This is the little piece you will feed the wire into and then screw down to lock into place. It's important to remove all the slack so that the solenoid can get a good pull on the wire when you go to activate it.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0462.jpg
Solenoid mounted. I used one of the 8mm tail light stud/nut combo to mount it. It was really nice of Nissan to use 20 studs to mount the tail light assembly to the chassis LOL.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0461.jpg
Here is the little clamping piece fed through the wire and then tightened down. You will want to make sure your solenoid is mounted firmly before finalizing this step.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0463.jpg
Relay setup.
Now for Viper alarm systems, I had to locate the red w/ white stripe wire in the main harness. Thank god it was right out in front so I didn't have to fishing for it in my cluster bomb of alarm wiring... LOL
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0465.jpg
So pretty much the only annoying part of the whole process is feeding / hiding the signal wire from the front of the car all the way to the back. The same idea would apply for the 12V source wire too but since I relocated my battery to the back, this was a lot easier.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0466.jpg
This is my common area for hiding wires, LOL.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0467.jpg
12V source wire hooked up to the battery terminal and then fed out of the box and underneath the interior. Don't forget about installing the 15A fuse (unless you like fires).
Here is everything all mounted up...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/interior/trunk/IMAG0469.jpg
Finalized product. As you can see I used another tail light nut to mount the relay to the chassis, props again to Nissan. :)
The only delay I had with the install was with the Viper alarm system itself. I was pressing the AUX button and nothing was happening. So I had to dive into the user manual and figure out wtf was going on... Apparently you have to hold the AUX button for a good 3 or 4 seconds before it sends out the ground signal to the solenoid. Hearing the relay click and solenoid pop open the trunk is sweet sweet music to the ears.

Yeah they are nice. Good streetable coilover. I'm most definitely going to upgrade to Swift springs in the future. I want to keep 7kg up front, but increase to 6kg for the rear, 5kg just seems a tad bit too soft for me.

So I have this running theme with my car. Basically, this idea entails showering my car with decals. I know what you're thinking, "wtf killer screw this ricey bullshit build, im out!".
But no, there are strict conditions:
Condition #1: The decal CANNOT be seen from a person's normal viewing angle. As in, with the hood shut, doors closed you can walk around the car and look everywhere and no decals will be seen.
Condition #2: The decal must represent something either installed on the car -or- represent something to me as a person. For example, earlier in this thread I installed the HKS Hi-Power exhaust, and on the frame rail I slapped on the HKS decal (http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0179.jpg).
Which brings me to my next little addition...
I work in a sports store while slowly finishing up my bachelors degree in Computer Science. Not too long ago we got in these cool static cling decals for various teams. I decided to snatch up all my favorite teams to put somewhere on my car.
I was looking around for a good spot to put them, and the answer was just too easy...

Just ordered some Swift springs for the coilovers. I couldn't wait. 7kg front / 6kg rear. But unfortunately they are on back-order for 4 weeks! Oh well.
I also ordered a new set of OEM rear wheel bearings for my Ichiba hubs. Probably won't be for another month until everything starts rolling in. Going to collect all the parts and do it all at once.
Finally got my friend's S14 back on the road (yanked out the KA and swapped in an SR). Here's a rare picture of me actually IN my car. :)

*sigh*
Occasionally I get random urges to check my car out, whether it be looking for leaks, looking for loose bolts etc etc. Sometimes I find myself underneath my car looking at everything anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour.
Ever since I installed my coilovers I would notice occasionally this sound of "dirt" kicking up in the tire well, I knew it wasn't a coilover noise because it was rotational. I sort of shrugged it off because it would eventually go away.
Fast forward to tonight, I'm looking underneath the rear section of my car, looking at subframe bolts, axle bolts, and then I notice immediate fail.
Apparently that "dirt" sound was the inside of my tire grinding against the inside wheel well metal lip, and chunks of tire were being slung up, hence the sound.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/hkscoils/IMAG0509.jpg
This is a picture of the inside of the tire, probably the worst spot, but this ring goes all the way around.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/exterior/hkscoils/IMAG0510.jpg
This is part of the wheel well that was rubbing against the tire (and it looks like some rim too).
The whole fail aspect to this story is I took my 5mm spacers off because I said to myself "I don't need these anymore, I'll wait for my 15mm spacers to arrive." And the thing is, I checked for clearance when the car was still jacked up, but I failed to recheck clearance once the car was on the ground. The car rolled back with ease so I assumed I was good to go... NOT!
I banged the lip flat and I re-installed my 5mm spacers, so I shouldn't have any more clearance issues...
Do you guys think I need to replace this tire? Anyone who has dealt with this before. Again its on the inside of the wheel not the outside. It really sucks cause I just bought these damn tires. Fortunately the other side was fine, it was only the left side that had the rubbing issue.
edit:
To clarify again, it was the rear left tire that was rubbing. The other 3 tires were fine with no clearance issues.

I recall reading somewhere that people had issues with one side of the S13 chassis having one wheel sunken in more than the other side. Guess you found out what side it was... I would run the tire. It looks strictly cosmetic and not cut super deep. The car looks good, I can't wait to get mine back up and running.

Yeah, the rubber thats missing seems to be the extra amount of rubber that protects the rim from curbage. There are no steel belts exposed or anything and definitely no air leaks. Knowing me I'll probably end up buying a new tire in a couple weeks though. LOL.
Drove to work today no rubbing or any signs of clearance troubles so I'm good for now. Got a few parts on the way and a few more parts still to order. Tick tock tick tock...

My new OEM rear wheel bearings came in...

And then the other day I decided to take a random picture of my car...

Haven't washed the car in months, I've pretty much given up hope on the car's exterior until I actually decide to start working on all the body work that lies ahead of me...
Parts I'm still waiting on:
- 15mm KICS bolt on spacers.
- 7kg front / 6kg rear Swift Springs.
- SPL Parts rear traction / toe rods.
Once the parts come in I'll get some more pics up, then off to Firestone for an alignment.

I don't know how I'm going to tell you guys this, but I have some embarrassing news. Let me start off by saying that when I bought my first 240sx back in 2007, I knew little to NOTHING about cars. In the last 5 years I have literally went from knowing nothing, to knowing everything I do now. And I'm still learning on a day to day basis...
With that said, I made a gruesome discovery... I swapped my SR20 into my car sometime around Jan/Feb 2008... For the last 4 years, the ground wire for my oxygen sensor was never hooked up! I have been running rich for 4 years...
*moment of silence*
Seriously? Yeah... Sometimes I find myself going back and checking things I did back in 2008 when I swapped the SR and scratching my head like "what was I thinking..."
But what I don't understand is my car never ran terrible enough to make me question the oxygen sensor's integrity. I usually got 21mpg in the city, and I verified that I was getting around 30mpg driving to ATL and back all highway. My idle was always consistently 850rpms...
So now that I have verified that it has ground and 12V switched with ignition ON, I am interested to see what type of gas mileage lies ahead of me. Maybe the sensor is so fouled from running rich this whole time it still won't function properly.
I did a quick drive after hooking it up and noticed a smoother idle. The car seemed a little smoother in between shifts as well. Other than that the power felt pretty much the same. I just replaced my spark plugs too so I don't have to worry about fouled plugs.
When I yank the engine out this winter I'll replace the O2 sensor with a new one for sure.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0527.jpg
Project KICS 15mm bolt on spacers. This should give me the desired look I'm after. It will effectively make my front offset +15 and the rear offset +23.
My Swift springs have been shipped, so I'll probably get those by next week.
I made a trip to Harbor Freight this morning, had to get a low profile jack now that my car is lower than before. Not to mention one of my scissor jacks stripped the threads and my car came crashing down as I was lowering it. Good thing I wasn't underneath it LOL. I also bought an electric impact gun, so removing wheels will be a breeze and those hard to break bolts won't slow me down anymore.
Sunday after work I'm planning the breakdown process, Monday I'll be taking my hubs + new bearings to get pressed on. Hopefully I'll be able to get everything back together and the alignment on the same day, otherwise I'll have to wait till Wednesday when I'm off again.
Stay tuned!

Well I had a jam packed day today. Started the day with a trip to AutoZone. I needed to get some axle grease for the axles as well as some oil and filter for my upcoming routine oil change.
I also realized I didn't have a 36mm socket for the axle nut so I had to call my friend who I know had one. Ended up staying at his house for a couple hours trying to help him diagnose some issues he was having working on someone else's car (Pontiac Grand Prix). To make a long story short, I told him the coolant temp sensor he bought wasn't ohm'ing out the same as the OEM one, he switched back to the OEM one and the car no longer overheated... lol.
After that little fiasco I needed to head on over to Firestone to get the old Ichiba rear wheel bearings off my hubs and the new OEM bearings pressed on. I got to the counter and the guy manager said "We no longer service parts people bring in." WTF! I brought my front wheel hubs + bearings to you guys like a year ago. When I told him that he told me they no longer do it anymore. So I took my ass to Pep Boys down the street and they said "Sure, we'll get this done for you in no time." And an hour or so later they called me up to come pick up my hubs. Awesome.
Now onto some pictures...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0533.jpg
Nothing better than fresh OEM bearings. I'm hoping these last me a good 20+ years.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0529.jpg
Old toe and traction rods. I swear the traction rods on my car have not been tampered with since the car rolled off the factory line. I was using my brand new impact gun and the impact was no match for how seized these bolts were. I had to get my ratchet and the pole from the low profile jack, and use that as leverage to do one giant push of energy to break it loose. Damn that sound was horrible too. LOL.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0535.jpg
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0536.jpg
New traction and toe arms installed.
And now we move onto the axles... Holy crap. This shit looked like baby's milk diarrhea. I would recommend everyone to put fresh new grease in their axles the next time you swap in a differential or do subframe bushings.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0534.jpg
BARF!!!
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0532.jpg
Cleaning it up, once I got as much of the old grease out (which is was so liquidy it just poured right out like a milkshake), I took a good amount of new grease and packed it in there.
After bolting everything back up, I put the cotter pin in for the axle and was trying to bend it up with a needle nose pliers, the type of pliers that bend 90 degrees near the tip. I'm pulling up with the pliers and of course it slips off the cotter pin and I stab myself with both tips right in the face just missing my eye...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/accident/IMAG0540.jpg
So as a reminder for you guys, please don't forget to wear safety glasses. I could be rocking an eye patch right now if I wasn't so lucky... Or maybe an eye patch would be boss as fuck? I'm sure the ladies would love it. :)
Wednesday I am going for an alignment. :yum:

No, the axles were not leaking or anything. In retrospect, I probably should have refurbished the axle entirely, but this was just a little job I wanted to do while the axles were off the car. Remove old grease, insert new grease. Nothing to it.

Then OE boots are probably the reason the grease was diluted. They get permeable over time. Why you see the silicone boot kits.

Well as planned, I got my alignment today. Went to a brand new Firestone where my tech got transferred to. The alignment machine is wayyyy nicer than at the other Firestone I use to go to! Check it out!

This setup makes it favorable for lowered vehicles, just perfect!

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/IMAG0545.jpg
In the process of getting the settings dialed in!
I did -2.5 for front camber and -3.0 for rear camber. Toe and caster all set to factory standard. The car drives amazing now. I actually cracked a smile when taking a turn LOL!
Another little piece to the puzzle showed up today...

Only thing left to do now is put on my 15mm spacers. I'll probably get to that later today.

did you get your oem bearings from pepboys? I know chain autostores (oreily/kragen, autzone, etc.) can special order things, i was just expecting these autostores to carry some type "oem replacement" raybestos wheel bearings on the shelf.

No, I got them from the Nissan dealership.

Just got done installing the 15mm spacers. Unfortunately I had a little clearance issue so I had to crank the camber a little more. I'd probably say I'm at about -4.0 for the rear now. I'll go back to Firestone next week and get it evened out for sure. Might also bump the front camber to -3.0 instead of -2.5.

Alignment is done. My rear toe was horrible as I expected.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/IMAG0019.jpg
With this much toe in my tires were fighting against each other, it became real apparent in the rain. Not fun.
In order to prevent rubbage I ended up doing -5.0 camber in the rear. A bit more than what I wanted. So I'm thinking when I start diving into the body work, I'll do a SLIGHT roll and pull so I can achieve -4.0.
I have the front camber at -3.5 and I think I like it at that setting for now. Car rides amazing, definitely a real treat to drive. :2f2f:

Took my car out for a spin, didn't notice too much of a difference. Probably because my engine mounts aren't shot to shit like most folks. But the one thing I did notice right off the bat was the engine start up and shut down, a lot more stable in that respect.

It's just an overall nicer ride. There's no secrets with these springs they perform how you would expect them to. Very smooth and very quiet. Not saying the HKS springs were bad at all, but Swift is kind of a big deal. Haha.

Yeah, honestly I've had no troubles with them in dry or wet conditions. Again, this isn't a track car, just a nice daily.
The next set of tires I plan on purchasing are the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs. Been hearing good things about them so I'll give them a try. Before the S-drives I had KDW2's which are also good tires.

Not really, just normal daily driver duties, a few sharp turns here and there. The car rides so smooth you wouldnt even know I'm on coils, but all the performance benefits of coilovers are present.

I decided to try something different. Since I strictly bought KDW2's, I figured I would at least see what else is out there. Going to try the Z1 star specs next, we'll see how they match up against the KDW2.

Haha thanks. And no!!! Absolutely not. While I love the RB, its not suitable for what my intentions are with this car. I am however planning on hitting a reliable 300hp with the SR. That's the goal.

Good question. When I first bought my car I didn't know much of anything. I bought the SR and just threw it in there and wired things as I went along. Lucky for me the engine has been running solid for 5 years now. It's a mess, but a controlled mess.
This winter I'm planning on ripping out the engine and doing everything the right way.

This car is long overdue for a paint job. I'm not going to reveal what color until I'm ready to spray the engine bay. Gotta keep the suspense alive.

Well, the 300zx calipers have been shipped, hopefully I will receive them by Wednesday. I would like to be able to paint them red so hopefully the package comes earlier in the morning. But knowing my luck I'll get it at 6pm. :(
Decided to clean up the garage today. Still a work in progress but spent the entire morning clearing up as much as I could...

Alright. Got some work done today.
Installed the 350z brake rotors and z32 30mm aluminum front calipers with conversion brackets. Since the kit I bought was essentially for the 300zx, I had to use my own spacers not the ones provided in the hardware kit.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/brakes/IMAG0067.jpg
Bolting the conversion bracket on.
And mounting the calipers is where I had a little spacing issue. The washers supplied to correct this were literally thin as paper...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/brakes/IMAG0068.jpg
I needed more space, a lot of it. So here is what I came up with...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/brakes/IMAG0071.jpg
Area of emphasis here is between the knuckle and the bracket.
Then I had another little issue... The caliper was hitting the head of the bolt by like 2mm.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/brakes/IMAG0070.jpg
Had to bust the dremel out and grind it down ever so slightly...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/brakes/IMAG0072.jpg
Once that was all done everything was perfect.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/brakes/IMAG0073.jpg

LOL. My car never ceases to throw surprises my way...
So I get off of work early to install my rear calipers that I painted. I install the driver side, all good. I go to do the passenger and I look at the threading for the brake line, completely stripped! I didn't even bother to see if the caliper would work. I know how easy brakes can leak so I wasn't going to take my chances...
What sucks is, Edwin was going to buy my old set so now that can't happen. Sorry bud.
AND THEN!
As I'm installing my driver side caliper, I notice a thick gooey like substance all over the place...
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/rear/IMAG0078.jpg
Yep. My axle boot tore, dispensing all the grease out. I have a feeling this happened from when I put new grease in... Maybe it was too much? But my boots were cracked from the start... Should have replaced the boots!
Good news is, my friend had a set of spare axles just sitting so I bought them off of him. Boots look way better than mine so we will see how they last...
Here are a couple pictures of the axles once I got them off the car...

My SR has been helping me with my daily duties for over 4 years now... I decided to clean out my FMIC and radiator. This job seems to be something a lot of people overlook, but doing so helps out in big ways. I always use to spray my radiator with the hose when I would wash my car but it never really cleaned anything. The best and most thorough way to clean it is to take it out and flush it out from the backside.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/cleaning/IMAG0085.jpg
Yanked the bumper off, time to pull the FMIC off...

Here is the FMIC before the cleaning procedure.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/cleaning/IMAG0089.jpg
I used an A/C coil cleaner that is safe for aluminum. It foams up and seeps into the fins breaking up all the gunk that has been collecting for years.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/cleaning/IMAG0091.jpg
The above picture WAS the disgusting state of my radiator. Yikes.

Radiator back in the car, clean as a whistle.

FMIC cleaned up.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/restoration/cleaning/IMAG0094.jpg
All back together!
The main reason why I decided to go about this job was because I was noticing my fans kicking on A LOT sooner on my trip home from work than usual. Not only were they kicking on sooner, but staying on twice as long. My car would never overheat, but the fans were overworked. I also noticed higher engine bay temps and overall my idle was a little rough.
If you daily drive your car I would recommend doing this, just take a look at your radiator and you will know if its time.

Going to finally focus on my interior.
Here's a list of things I have planned so far:
- S13 JDM DCC install
- Defi Gauges (Boost + Oil pressure)
- AFR gauge + digital temperature gauge
- Suede door cards, headliner and dashboard
- New speakers all around
- Clean up all interior wiring
- Customize gauge cluster bezel to fit AFR / Temp gauges
- OEM S15 seats
I know there will be a bunch of little things to replace once I start ripping it all out, for sure lol...

Well, the car looks great, we have similar taste. Since I'm too lazy to go back thru your thread, I'll just ask. Is that front bumper a stock s15 with a greddy or similar style lip molded on? I have the c-west front bumper but have been considering going with an oem bumper and was curious as to how it's holding up. It's either an oem piece or a wisesquare kit that I'm juggling around. I'm interested to see how your DCC install goes as well. Although I'd have to source an entire AC system first. Keep it up, subscribed.

Yes, OEM S15 bumper with Trust (GReddy) Gracer front lip.
No A/C for this car. However, the blower motors and the heat will be fully functional.

Just curious about something because I've never seen it mentioned in the DCC install threads. Hows the unit going handle not always being able to reach the cooler temp that it's set for? if that question even makes sense. The reason Ive set this project on the back burner is that I figured without having AC, on a hot or warmer day, the unit would constantly be trying to correct for it and, I dont know, maybe burn out sooner because it's constantly trying to correct it to a cooler temerature that it won't be able to reach without an AC unit. As I've never been in a 240 with the DCC in it, I have no 1st hand knowledge as to the different ways it actually operates, I am just going off everything I've read on here basically about it. Or maybe I'm just stoooopidR right now than i usually am, and am way over thinkin it. Props for doing your work yourself.

08-09-2012, 10:51 AM
Without AC and the DCC on auto and set for like 65 degrees it will just turn the fan on high and leave it there. I'm not sure what you expect to burn out. It's not like you add some magical box for it to work with. It's still just your AC air exchange box under the dash and a blower fan. I'm one to say without AC the DCC conversion is just being a fan boi to the max. It's pointless. The only real time it would work is when you're using heat. So to go through the conversion to only have it work properly on half the settings just doesn't make sense, and for Steven here in Florida to do it, his would be used and work properly what?? 2 weeks a year?? Maybe???? I vote you just put AC back in your car Steven. It's not some track car, it's a street car.

Hey guys thanks for the concern. The majority of the time the DCC unit will be OFF. Hell, I have a head unit but I NEVER listen to music (ask Trevor haha). When I want to use the unit for heat or fan blowing purposes, then I will turn it on.
A/C will never be installed in this vehicle, I have another car for that. ;)

08-09-2012, 12:02 PM
Like I stated, I didn't know because no ones mentioned it on the DCC install threads, so I was asking. And I was just refering to the actual unit itself trying to compensate for whatever it is set too. I know there's not some magical little box, jeez, you'd thought I posted about believing in leprechauns and unicorns. Also I don't think it would be fanboy to put something in your car that was OEM equipment, and if later down the road you want to put Ac in it then your all set. Until then it will still serve the same purpose as the one he has now. Out here in Cali, soemtimes I have to run the heater in the summer when I'm stuck in stop and go traffic to keep the temps where I like to see them hover. Besides, the DCC unit looks a shit ton better than manual unit like I have. Busted ass POS is what it should be called.

I'm rarely in traffic honestly. Most of the time when I'm in need of A/C is when its pouring outside and the humidity is so goddamn awful my windshield fogs up bad. LOL. The fuel lines were easy to get to since I had the entire subframe dropped. I sold the white 240sx to my friend for $800 once I stripped everything I wanted off of it.

Thank you! The cool thing about the color I have chosen is that it has never been applied to an S-chassis. I have searched all throughout Google and I've been through the definitive paint thread a few times. Infact, the only car it has ever been on (other than the cars it was painted on from the factory) is a Honda... And they applied it as a single-stage paint so it doesn't look as great.
I'm excited to dive into the engine bay and begin the prep work so I can see how the color will translate. :bigok:

================================================== ====================
The car actually overheated on me going to work yesterday. It ended up being the DIF fan controller not switching the fans on. I had to switch it to another temperature setting to get them to kick on. So due to that, when I do yank the engine out I'm going to have to figure out another type of fan controller. I will need something more reliable.
Any ideas?

The engine in the 2tone ended up being no good, even after the headgasket job. So I had to source another KA24E. Pulled one out of a car on Thursday and by Friday night had it running in the 2tone.
Drove the 2tone all day today, slowly starting to finalize it. Once I do a few more things and deem it a reliable daily driver, the S13.5 will go under the knife for at least the next 6 months (although I'm anticipating longer). And thus, this build thread will flourish with life again, LOL!
Snapped a couple of pictures in the meantime...

Finally, I have done a write-up of my half manual, half power window modification.

And to stay somewhat on topic. I snapped this random picture of the S13.5.

I will be starting the break down soon. First I need to get 20% tint for the 2tone. Once that is done I'll be doing a complete overhaul of the garage, cleaning it up and organizing entirely. Once the garage is done, it'll be the resting place for the S13.5 for at least 6 months!

Haha, I would have a hard time enjoying my car if I had cheap janky parts on it.
Went down to the local Firestone to visit my tech. He just got his freshly rebuilt 2JZGTE VVTI engine swapped into his IS300 and running good. I had to check it out. And of course, it gives me an excuse to drive the S13.5 for the first time in 2 weeks.

I love s15 fronts, I literally said the same thing you said when my car crashed.
That lip looks a lot better now for some reason. I couldnt justify spending like $300 for that, I went to a local honda place and got an integra one for $50 LOL
What are you planning to do as far as fenders? Yours do not look bad at all, maybe minor fiberglassing would suffice. Mine are Extreme dimensions fenders and they fit like crap. I have origin ones that need to be picked up from my local shop.
I'm gonna go double check, but I didnt see anything about a bumper support/crash bar. Do you plan on getting one? I would try and fit your old support with some cutting or something.
Did you switch rad supports or no? I think if you have an s15 rad support, you can use the jdm zenki bumper supports which are 2 square pieces. I have a set but I havent installed them yet to confirm

I have a set of OEM S13 fenders, and a set of OEM S15 fenders. I'm going to have them cut and welded so fitment is spot on perfect.

As of right now, no plans on a bumper support. I still have my pignose bumper support but I doubt I can modify that appropriately without ruining its structural integrity... We'll see...

Origin fits perfect. It's a good price too. Idk how much the s13 fender, s15 fender and welding is going to cost but if it is under $600 total then go for it.
I bought origin ones for under $400 and its worth the money. The route you are going is ideal, but I would feel serious pain in my heart if anything ever happens to them. I would feel the pain, bro, I'd feel it.

As you can imagine, I've thought about the Origin fenders. However, I do not like the air ducts in them and I'm set on retaining the factory side repeaters on the fenders. The ultimate goal is to get the car looking like Nissan offered the S13.5 as a factory option. :)
In other news, currently waiting for my tax money to process and deposit into my account which should be in the next couple weeks. Once that happens, V2.0 of this build begins!

BTW MOAR POWER SOON
Updates:
I spent my tax money on bills and the purchase of new wheels for the two-tone (Volk GT-C's). So naturally, the S13.5 got short changed! :( I drove it the other day for the first time in about a month, amazing to feel the power difference from KA24E (140hp) to stock SR20DET (205hp).
My goal with the SR is 320hp max. Anywhere from 300-320hp I'll be satisfied.
Soon I will be taking the tires off of the LMGT4's and swapping them onto the GT-C's. Then the LMGT4's will stay in a safe spot until I can get them fully restored.
Before I start tearing apart the S13.5 I've decided to save up a good chunk of money. So that's where I'm at currently... SAVING UP!

It has begun. Since I'm currently broke and busy with work and school, the car gets no play. But that's fine in a way too, because it gives me time to think about every little critical detail.
I dismounted the tires off of my LMGT4's and put them on the GT-C's for the two-tone. I've decided from this point forward to really start taking pictures / video of every little detail along the way from now till I finish. I'm going to create a video of this car when its all finished.
I was so excited about the ideas flowing inside my head I decided to make a quick video of me driving my two-tone with the newly installed GT-C's, seen here:
Silver Green Two-Tone 240sx - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSRaWqFBpCI)
The video for the S13.5 will be a lot more in depth than this, and probably twice as long, and twice as entertaining!!! I'll make sure of it!
Anyways, here are some pictures of me swapping off the LMGT4's and installing the 350z wheels.

Man this is probably one of my favourite builds on this site so far. I love the 13.5 conversion. I plan to go that route at some point in the future. I am definently going with the welded fenders. But I would like to retain the s13 core support. Can you detail how you mounted the headlights?

Haha. I can't wait to prep this car for paint. I've decided to set up my garage as a mini paint booth, I'm gonna buy a small compressor, DA sander and an HVLP gun. Prep the car myself and spray on the primer and primer sealer. Then when I'm satisfied with the prep work I'll take it to my friend's brother's body shop and have him paint the car. He will also be the one doing the cut and weld on the S13/S15 fenders to my specifications. I'll be sure to document it all.
And yes, there is a build thread for the two-tone, but its private at the moment. :)

Began doing work. Trying to do all the little stuff I can while I save up some more money.
I started off by taking the HKS coilovers and adjustable RUCAs off of the car and replacing with the stock components.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/v2/teardown/IMAG0973.jpg
It's like building a car in reverse. LOL. I remember when this car was stock.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/v2/teardown/IMAG0974.jpg
Dat gap!
Only did the rear at night, didn't want to disturb the neighbors anymore, so I decided to continue the front suspension swap the next day.

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/v2/teardown/IMAG0976.jpg
Bumper and fenders off. Trying to decide if I want to sell these conversion fenders to someone for cheap, or if I should create a Youtube video of me blowing them up into a million little pieces all while laughing manically.
After removal of the fender on the driver's side. I immediately noticed that my tires were rubbing against the harness.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/v2/teardown/IMAG0977.jpg
It was a matter of time before I would start having electrical issues! Definitely going to have to route this harness differently.

I've decided to show you guys some pictures of the engine bay, and all the work that lies ahead of me in the next couple of months...

http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/v2/teardown/IMAG0986.jpg
Wires, wires, wires! Wires running everywhere, in all directions. My goal is to eliminate everything I don't need, clean and conceal everything else.
http://tehl33tsite.com/240sxdd/black240/v2/teardown/IMAG0988.jpg
Ugly routed hoses, zipties galore, brake lines not even secured to chassis etc. Just a lot of little shit that is really starting to bother me with this car, so it will all be addressed.
That's all for now. I've already drained the transmission so the next step is to pull the engine out and start removing all the components in the engine bay. Given the fact that the two-tone is running solid now, I have plenty of time to work on this car and there will be nothing that is overlooked. But as far as I'm concerned, I have to start over from scratch.
