searched around a bit and didnt really find anything definitive. whining started after i drove 100+ miles at once a couple weeks ago. somewhat quiet at idle, gets progressively louder as i rev higher, almost starts squealing if i hit 3-4k rpms in first gear. no smoking or anything. belts didnt look frayed or cracked but ill check again. ideas ?

check the tensioner pullies.

you'll need to narrow down the source of the sound, though; i.e. front, mid, rear of engine, then top, mid, bottom, etc.

might be more obvious if you have someone rev the car in neutral while you listen for the sound. also a long screwdriver w/ your ear to it helps a bit.

Does your car also sound like a UPS truck now? If so, your clutch fan is seized.

I had this problem. It was the A/C belt on my car. Took the belt off since it was Fall anyways, and noise is gone. Now that it is warming up I gotta get in there and see if its the pulley or the compressor making the noise...
