ooh man...that truly sucks. my cousin was supposed to go that meet, drives an E36 BMW, was all excited about the canyon run. he ended up goin to six flags with me and some other guys, glad that he did too, cause i know i'd be traumatized if something like that happened to him. i was pretty psyched after my first canyon run, but since then i've been driving sooo carefully, 100mph through a canyon!?!?!? no way!!! let's hope a tragedy like this doesn't hit the 240community.

I read everything on bimmerforums and m3forum about this. It is way ****ing sad to hear **** like this happen. It makes me wanna strip the back of my car so that noone could sit back there even if they wanted to and i'm not joking. I have learned a lot in the last year about keeping things in control on the street and I hope this true story helps others to do the same. It's just not worth it to pull that crazy **** off. I think I might have to put on a "Take it to the track" sticker on my car or something to help this cause. The only thing bad with that is if I ever speed I might look like a hypocrite so it's kind of pointless. Keep it safe people.

Another reason why I don't go to random mountain runs anymore. Too many dangerous drivers in fast cars out on the isolated twisty roads.

As a car enthusiast, one thing that has always amazed me is how amazing drivers begin their learning.. how they started, and how they are still alive -- even after all the races and close-calls. One thing that I love about having a simple car, is how you can learn a car and not take much for granted.. since its safe to say our cars are "basic vehicles."
When you dont have goodies like abs, lsd, and traction control.. you learn the evil characteristics that a vehicle is capable of.
When you deeper into things, like not having power steering, not having great tires, having a crappy low power motor.. you get even better at knowing the basic characteristics of how a car handles, brakes, loses control, etc. When your car doesnt have much of anything, and isnt worth much of anything.. its really easy to just "get to know" your car. Its really easy to NOT have an ego when you get your ass handed to you by just about any car on the road.
I always trip out when I see egotistical people behind the wheel of cars that they are not capable of controlling. Some people think computers and technology can cover-up poor driving skills, but the bottom line.. there will never be a solution for ignorance.
I am not knocking the cars or comparing, just find it interesting how the basics really are the essentials when it comes to advancing your skills. Money does not replace practice, only TIME and EFFORT will make you a better driver.. it doesnt matter if its a million dollar McLaren F1, you have to be capable of not only controlling the car, but also controlling yourself.
It doesnt matter that the owner of this car was a BMW driver, the situation is nothing but sad sad sad. This is one of the very same reasons why I dont believe in canyon runs with large group of people, its just too unsafe and difficult to organize.
Its one thing to go and have fun, its another to just hang your balls out with the expectation of beating another car.
We need to be safe, be smart, and be humble. Condolences to everyone who knew the passenger in the back.

When we went on the mountain drive with the convention, Me, and a few other guys had a similar scare. At first Me, and Steele's, and Russ were all driving ahead of everyone, pretty far ahead, and driving dangerously fast. It was a beautiful day, and the roads were clean, so we were doing about 7-10th's. anyways, we get to a rest area, and pull off to wait for the rest of the group. After about 10 min, everyone shows, and Me, steele's and Jerome take off.. Russ is following but about 30 sec behind... Well, Me, steele's and jerome had a pretty good pace going 6 or 7 10th's I'd say. Good solid pace.. Come to a T in the road, and decide to pull off immediately after and wait for everyone b/c we weren't sure where we were going. Well, 10 min goes by, and no one.. We start to get a little scared. Try and call people on the walkie talkies but we get nothing (out of range).. cell phones, no one answered. An emergency vehicle goes flying by.. A wrecker.. By now we are pretty much freakin out.. One of us goes back to check out what happened.. We still sat there freakin' mainly because we knew Russ was going to be driving like mad to try and catch us. We were definately afraid for his life for a while. When we heard he had just done some slight body damage to the car, and that everyone was ok, it was like a million pounds being lifted..
this really hits home.. Be safe everybody..

tragic, stupid, and preventable.
It's unfortunate, but like Mike said, there are too many people who try to drive their cars in ways they aren't capable of driving them.
That's why at meets or whatever, the most I'll do is a cruise. You know, like maybe 3/10ths.
I'll never come close to losing control of my car when there are other people nearby or when there is a chance i'll harm someone other than myself. There's not much chance of me doing more stupid **** on the street anymore anyway. I've got too much to lose.
Clearly the guy with the red M3 didn't think he had that much to lose.
Unfortunately, his passenger James did.

The driver, Dave, was 20 and the passengers, Jordan and James, were both 20 and 19, respectively. He just turned 19 too...
The Silver M3 was an e46. There's no way that was Steve. He doesn't do stuff like that.
Wow. I'm not one to talk **** about maturity coming with age, as I'm only 23. I am, however, less prone to impulse and a big fan of utilizing common sense. I have no doubt that had these guys been more experienced in driving and in life, that that wouldn't have happened. At least not with them.
Sucks that that guy was only 19.
And also, WTF is a 20 year old doing owning an M3?

All i hear about nowadays is car crashes, and having just lived through a near death one, I can somewhat understand what the terror must have been like. My condolences to the family. Be safe guys.

Sad news. Prayers to James, and his family.
I would never want 2 people in my car during any kind of driving. The weight balance of the car is completely thrown off.

Thats a very good question, how did he get the M3? If I were to guess it was his parents. And I really do feel for his parents right now because if I was in their shoes I dont think I could ever forgive myself that I gave my son the keys to a car he could not control and to make it worse, he didnt kill himself, he killed someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Orange County, CA. BMW meet, mountain road, "spirited driving."
100mph, turns, E46 M3, 20 year old driver, 19 year old passenger (James) in the backseat.
Car loses control, flips/smashes/etc, car catches fire, people in the front live, James burns while trapped in the back. Confirmed that he was screaming for help, while car was burning, he died that day.
Driver is facing serious charges.

Thats probably one of the most horrible things that I can imagine...
Those young men that survived will probably never be the same people again, and their lives will never be anything like they were before.:wtc:

That's sad about the guy burning :o
About the question of a 20 y/o owning an M3. It is odd hearing of a 20 year old with an M3 but maybe he had a good job and was a hard worker, had money saved for college but then got his education payed for already, or inherited a good amount of money...orrr probably just a spoiled brat. When I was 19 I was working hard and making enough to afford an M3. And now I'm lazy and I don't make sht : (

...And this is just another example of why not to f|_|ck around with passengers in the car, if you do it at all. 9 times out of 10 passengers (esp. rear seat passengers) sustain the worst injuries due to lack of room for damage compression or escape and less safety features. If you gotta drive fast, then do it alone on an empty road and at least excercise SOME control, your family and friends don't deserve the grief of your death, especially cause you like to go fast...

yeah, that is a personal rule i have. i dont drive past 5/10th when i have a passanger(s). since its gutted now, i can only have 1 passanger. i dont find myself skilled enough to risk the lives of others (unless im paying money for a instructor, haha!!).

hopefully this story puts some sense into your heads. One of the reasons why I haven't done that in a long time. Theres still a bunch of people on Zilvia alone that I know still go canyon racing.
TIP: If you get the urge of racing up in the canyons, try to think if it's worth your life. If IT IS worth your life then at least drive by yourslef and dont take anyone else with you so if you flip over and die, it will be just you and noone else. the end.

Out here in LA, and M3 is pretty much mainstream.. not special at all. I mean sure, its a nice car and will get attention.. but the way SOME people live out here, its nothing out of the ordinary. Its not amazing to see punk kids attending schools like Beverly Hills High getting M3's when they turn 16.
Me? I didnt drive till I was 18, I owe my dad a big thanks on that one.. and I had no choice, he bought me a `90 SOHC S13 Hatch auto.. quick enough to get me into bad situation, but not TOO quick where you can easily get "cought up."
Some people have a hard time fighting the urge to race, adrenaline picks them up and they loose their cool -- focus more on racing, they think the streets become "2 fast 2 furious" and that the roads are theirs. Whatever, its bad to criticise this guy since we dont know him OR what exactly happened, but its a sad picture regardless.. especially for the rear passenger who passed away.
I agree, when I race.. I usually do it by myself. When I have a passenger and I want to drive fast, I always make sure they are comfortable FIRST. If someone doesnt trust me or my driving, I wont drive fast.. I dont believe in trying to impress people, they will be impressed if THEY WANT TO be impressed (and at the same time, feel safe).
Well anyway.. people like us kinda ask for stuff like this to happen sometimes, we fix up our cars and our cars get attention.. its a blessing and a curse. But, thats human nature.. its all self expression and we enjoy the bitter and the sweet. This is just another example of HOW bitter it really can be.

RIP James
Lets all remember a few things. You only have one life as well as others. Don't try to hot shot things just cause someone is tempting you. When you are driving a car its just not your life you hold while on the road you hold the lives of others in your hands as well. Lets also remember that our cars are weapons and treat them as such. You don't go out and fire you gun out in the middle of the road, so why go racing in a road. Take it to the track. And as far as some people saying "I don't want to back down cause I look like a punk" Remember this you look like a bigger man if you walk away from danger instead of heading into it. We as people are not bullet proof or danger proof, Its time for the ego's to come back down to earth. Life is short and nothing should be taken for granted. My prayers go out to the families of the kids. Just remember all we can help each other. Lets be smart, and as someone else said lets be humble.
