OT-- $100,000 VW JETTA?????

i was reading entertainment weekly when i got out of class the other day.  there was a little article about the kid from malcolm in the middle... franky muniz (spelling?)  anyway.... it said that he just turned 16 and bought the white jetta from the fast and the furious for $100,000!!!!  ONE HUNDRED FREAKING THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!

100,000? I would pick up a 426 hemi cuda (71 or 72) and then replace the leaf suspension with coil overs.... I would make that baby stick to the track... wouldn't you love to see a car that was on the track that still needed wheelie bars &quot;just in case&quot; oh, and for that much I could drop a quad turbo on, and run my 13:1 compression and have around 2000 hp... THAT would be fun. Probably the most insane car in the world. I want that.

And give the car a little credit, that car was a vr6, those are great engines, and stock, they will hand a modded 240 it's ass... 180hp with 226lb/ft, and damned if they don't sound great too... granted, his was a waste of money, but there is a turbo vr6 in a 85 rabbit in montreal that is one of the most insane vehicles I have ever seen.

Don't start saying what you'd do with $100k as if this kid would have any clue to do that as well. &nbsp;Of course we'd spend the money differently (exporting a Varietta, for example .. humana, humana).

The point is that he shouldn't've bought any car that nice without an appreciation for what he was doing. &nbsp;He's all like, &quot;I don't even know what's in there. &nbsp;It's got like DVD player, etc, etc&quot;. &nbsp;It's just a big toy for him if he thinks a DVD player counts as a 'mod'. I'm just saying I would go for something that is going to appreciate in value, that Jetta will never be worth what he paid for it 10 years down the road.

In 1965 you could buy a Cobra for under 8 grand, 30 years later that car is worth about 200 grand, the highest Cobra S/C went in 1990 at the Barrett Jackson auction for 700 grand. A Ford GT40 is worth over 300 grand.

Yes, because investment value is what this kid cares about. &nbsp;A few years down the road, he's not going to need cash any more than he needs it now.

It was not a financially unwise move in the least, because for him, it just doesn't matter. &nbsp;The only reason I insult the move is bitter jealousy (of being able to throw like that down on a car - any car)

i think...if it was the real car used in the movie... it could be an investment. &nbsp;maybe not a $100K investment....but more than a modded jetta. &nbsp;the only problem is.... he's 16....with a semi-fast car..... with NO appreciation for it. &nbsp;i say it'll be wrecked in 6 months. &nbsp;then another movie prop down the drain. &nbsp;

I agree with you Jeff, I think that to even have the option to throw down a hundred grand on a car is luxury I will probably never in my life have. The only way I would ever own a car worth that much is if I found one in a field and restored it. And even if it was the actual car used in the movie, in 10 years no one will remember the Fast and the Furious, let alone the VW Jetta that was in it.

My beef with the Jetta....4 doors. &nbsp;I refuse to drive anything that provides ease of transportation to loser acquaintances who bum rides when its raining. &nbsp; With my 240 i just throw a pile of clothes and a cd case in the back seat and say theres no room
