HEllo,

IDK if this is the correct section or not.

I have a question about carbon fiber hoods. I am new to the 240SX scene as i just picked up my 1991 coupe up just 2 weeks ago. MY question is I'm looking for a quality carbon fiber hood. i have owned seibon products in the past and i didn't like them. fitment was HORRIBLE it turned yellow over time (and the car was kept in the garage and was washed regularly).

What companies has anybody here had and their experience and opinions on them.

Oh, and also I'm trying to keep the flip up lights front end.

Thanks in advance.

My VIS hood fitted nice on my S14, but the hood latch never really lined up correctly. The VIS trunklid for my S14 fits pretty well, but once again could never get the trunk latch to line up. My Megan roof spoiler has terrible fitment around the sides of the glass. On a further note the VIS hood catch ripped oneday after the hood latch decided to let go and smashed my windshield and destroyed my roof.....hood pins

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all carbon fiber parts will fade over time. Just like painted surfaces will.... That's why they highly recommend re-clearing them yearly.

wrong. i also own a subaru and know a lot more about those cars but for example. VARIS carbon fiber is amazing. i know somebody that has a CF trunk on his sti. he had the car sit outside in the sun all last summer and it stay out side. the thing looks as good as it did when he bought it. its just companies like vis and seibon aren't good quality. so that why i started this thread to maybe see if there are any companies that offer CF for 240's that don't make any parts for subarus.

all reisen on fiberglass and carbon fiber will turn yellow due to UV light or other types of reisen that needs UV light to harden it. I've worked on a lot of types of reisen in the past and UV light causes it. if the carbon fiber hood does not have a layer of UV protectant on it, it will turn yellow. its suppose to reflect UV light from the reisen to absorb it.

He's saying that most resins are degraded by exposure to UV light. Most companies do not use resins that are UV stable. The reason is less that they can't purchase them, and usually more that they're very expensive/have short shelf life. So instead, the companies tend to rely on conventional clearcoat for UV resistance. That's pretty much the long and short of it. I used to sell commercial-level resin systems, so I've got a good amount of knowledge on the subject. When you get into Industrial/Aerospace grade stuff it gets even wilder.

The long and short of it is, unless your parts were clearcoated with a high-quality UV filtering paint, they will fade. I'd ask the companies directly or consult their websites. Otherwise, have it done yourself. It'll save you the headache in the long run.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think ManoNegra is referring to painting your carbon hood. He's saying it won't fade quickly if you paint it.

I want to get for the CF look as well or I wouldn't mind a carbon kevlar hood. Does anybody know of any companies that make carbon kevlar hoods for an S13?

It won't fade at all, if you paint it.

This is a Jay Leno/Corvette vid, but check the link to get an idea of what I'm talking about here... you only need to watch from 1:38-2:00 and the link starts you right there.

No joke. Dunno about quality, as I've never seen one. But they're out there.
