View Full Version : Cold start warming up/ IACV

So I've searched a bit, but I cant seem to find an answer. So here's the problem.. When I cold start the car in the morning, my RPMs stay around 1K and within 2 minutes of driving it under about 2k RPMs, my temp gauge goes straight between C and H...which should be normal temp.. but I don't see how it could warm up THAT fast? o.O After its "warmed up" it drops down to 800 at idle. I'm wondering if this is even normal because the screw on my IACV is screwed all the way in. I remember when I first did the swap, we had to screw it all the way in because it was idling at like 1.5-2k. Does any of this have to do with TPS, ignition timing or maybe a dirty iacv? I have yet to check these.

I think the lack of replies is due to the lack of information posted. What exactly are you asking? Is it a idle question or a temp question? Your idle is fine, 1k cold and 800 warm *steady pin* is where it needs to be. If your IACV was dirty you'd experience an extremely unsteady idle with random stalls. As for the engine temp, you said you did a swap rite? Maybe the temp guage is reading wrong, also some engines run hotter and give funky outputs to the OEM guage. For instance, my 2JZ runs a lot hotter than a KA or SR so my guage after 20 minutes is at a point that would make most people pull over and check there engine. Do you have a standalone ECU you could plug into your computer and check diagnostics? My 2J runs at about 190-195 degrees for normal driving.
edit: have you checked your radiator for discrepencies and make sure the *correct* fluid is in there?

The needle reads fine.. it just bugs me because it shows that its at normal temp after about 5 minutes of driving. The needle never goes past the halfway mark. Im thinking about just saving up for an aftermarket water temp gauge instead so i can actually see how hot it is. As for the Iacv, i was saying how the idle is only normal at 800 because i screwed the adjusting screw all the way down when i did the swap.

so let me get this straight...you want to know why 1- your car idles at 1000 at cold start up and then drops to 800 when warmed up? and 2 - why it only takes roughly 5 mins to warm up while driving in las vegas? lmao :duh:, its gonna be 2 mysteries for the ages my friend:newbie:

Yeah you really have nothing to worry about, you're idle is steady and where it needs to be, and 5-10 mins to heat up the engine is fine. I idle my car for 1-2 minutes before driving and 5 min after that all temps the ecu reads are where they should be.

LOL well it does the same in cold weather too.
Alright cool, I was just worried cuz someone told me ..or i read somewhere that you shouldnt really adjust the screw all the way down cuz it should be set already when you do the swap. And I thought my car was just weird because on my girlfriends SR, it slowly gets to normal temps on her gauge. Like 15 minutes of driving. Thanks guys.
