View Full Version : SR20DET intake mani for Red top vs. black top

I have an imported black top non-VVT SR20DET (I guess that would make it an S14 94-98 or something like that). I bought a built head for a red top that has springs, Ti retainers, 264 12.0 cams, etc. and didn't even think about whether my stock manifold would bolt up to the red top head or not. My guess is no?
When I swap the head I will be upgrading to an Apexi metal HG, ARP head studs, top feed injectors..all quality stuff. If necessary I will buy an S13 intake manifold (not a stock one) as part of the build. Turbo is a GT2871R .64.

you're guess is right, you got a lot of fancy stuff for someone who doesn't know what to do with it.

Wait... what?
Why not? It's the same exact thing. He said a NON vvt blacktop block(s13), with a built redtop head(S13).
Those are the same style intake manifolds.

S14 94-98 all had VTC. 180sx had non-VTC

This is exactly why I asked the question. I thought the intake manifolds for the black top and red top were the same, with the black top vvt motor having a different intake manifold?
I am relatively new to the 240sx scene and have spent countless hours trying to learn by reading this site, the NRR and NWN sites. I still have much to learn so I am thankful for anyone who is willing to help.
I bought the car around November of last year and have been continually piling up boxes of new parts to install on it, but my mechanic has been too busy to build the car for me. If I had a mechanic that I could trust and drop the car off with a pile of cash to get it done, I would do so, but I have to do this research myself because I don't have access to that kind of support.
EDIT--
According to the SR20DET FAQ page (http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/237660-sr20det-faq-swap-info.html) The 94-98 SR20DET black top was an S13 180sx motor. The only SR20DET motors to go into an S14 was the VTC version which I positively do not have.
My Question still remains: How much I have to change if I put a standard red top head on a motor that had a black top head.

If its a blacktop S13 engine, its the same exact shit as an S13 redtop engine. They just changed the damn valvecover color for the most part. If your blacktop has the same exact valvecover other than the color difference, its an S13 one. S14 are called notchtop because they are taller and have a slant on the back side of the valvecover. S13s all have a flat top valvecover.

lolz im sure thats the only difference... Actually I think on the black top there are slight differences than just a valve cover...

There are more differences, but he said for the most part because they're negligible differences.
