Hey Zilvians,

I have a problem where my shift knob CONSTANTLY vibrates as I drive. I'm not sure if this is due to a bad pressure plate, release bearing, clutch disk, flywheel, etc.

But is this normal for all you S14 owners? Does your shift knob hella vibrate when you drive?

Also, I realized at times where I start up my car in the morning, it grinds when I go from 1st gear to 2nd gear. But after engine/oil temperatures warm up, it doesn't grind. What could be the problem?

Let me know!

Do you know what weight trans fluid you are using?

^^^ sounds like your using to thick of fluid, do you have any type of short shifter?

How bad is the shifter vibration? Mine does as well, I don't necessarily see it as a problem or anything however.

yeah, I have a short shifter installed. I don't know what kind of short shifter though.

short shifter would make it vibrate or rattle ... even a B&M has a slight rattle to it.

but for the grinding from 1st to 2nd gear could be a few things, have you replace the clutch or done any maintenance on the trans?

I have a megan racing v2 short shifter and it rattles. At highway speeds and when I don't shift until redline it rattles pertty bad to where I hear it over my exhaust and radio but then if I diving around town it's not so bad. I think that it's 80w-120 trannny fulid I'm using but thats not to much thicker then what Nissan says to put in it. The shifter has a peace on the shifter rod that is held on with a snap ring and that is what is making the rattling noise. I've been wondering why it does this. Glad someone asked before I did

Rattle is from the short shifter, Grind is more than likely cause your using gear oil or thick fluid. Mine does the same thing BTW.

Also The snap ring vibration can be fixed with a little silicone, But not all of it.

If you have a short shifter, it will rattle. This is normal.
Your tranny fluid needs time to warm up, causing it to slightly grind when cold. This is normal.
A quick search could have prevented this thread.

A short term fix for the rattle is a thin layer of thread sealant tape between the o-rings on the short shifter, then put the weight back over the tape. It helped mine alot but when rpm's are up it will rattle no matter what.

Ahhh, thank you everyone for answering. Yes, I do have a shortshifter, as I didn't know that all short shifters vibrate more. I guess it's not much of an issue but for sure, I'll do a fluid check and see if my transmission oil is low. thanks all! i'll keep you all updated on this.

For the short shifter, what I did was get a hold of some 2" adhesive heat shrink. I put it over the entire center weight and snap rings, heated it, no more rattle. It's not terribly ugly, and there should be a boot over it anyway, so who cares what it looks like?

is it a grind or high pitch noise? Try youtube and see if you can match it up. In my 300zx i use to own, It made a grind but come to find out it was the throw out bearing. The clutch was OG so I just went ahead and did both.
