Hey guys, I have a 92 Hatch. My front-right CV Boot is completely torn and there's no grease left! I'm gonna buy a CV Boot kit from Checkers and my friend says he'll help me but he wants to know if the CV Joint needs to be pressed out? Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

umm yeah, i think you might be confused. Front right CV joint...
You sure you dont mean Steering rack boot?

Our cars are rear drive, they don't have front CV joints.
Are you talking about the boot on the tie rod end? If so, just replace it. The tie rod end, that is, not the boot. You can get Moog or TRW replacements (which can be regreased, unlike the stock bits) for around $40 or so at most auto parts stores, or spend more and get tough stuff like Teins.
Or are you talking about the boot at the end of the steering rack? One of mine is torn, too. I've got the new boots, just need to get under there and slide the new ones on sometime.

wow relief has struck me! Is it bad for this thing to be torn? or is it common and should just be fixed, but my suspension won't die w/ it not fixed.(it might have been like this for a few months now...=( ). Thanks soo much for your quick responses.

Well it's usually not good for stuff to be torn...
But if you're talking about the tie rod end, if you have a small grease gun with a needle tip you can squirt a little grease in there to keep it from groaning until you can replace it. Stick the needle under (or through) the rubber and go. But remember, that's a temporary fix.

replace it before more shit goes.. boots offer protection to parts, to keep them away from road grime, dust, water, etc.

i dont think it's been mentioned so i'll throw it in: make sure to clean out dust and debris that worked into the crack before replacing and re-greasing the boot! so remember to get some brake cleaner and more grease.

Here's a pic: it's about in one foot from the wheel. Is this the steering rack boot? I hear a popping noise when i turn my steering wheel. very bad or just needs to be regreased? Thanks again for all the help!

um..that's just a boot
it does NOTHING performance wise
its just keeps dirt and grime out of the inner tie rod ball joint
replacing it youll still have same problem!

Nope. Loud and Clanky represent! :D Uh, it's when i do left turns, but it sounds like its coming from that joint!!!!!

EDIT: Like when my car's off(so it's quiet). I turn my wheel to the right(no sound, except tires moving. hehe) then when i whip it back to the left i a hear a joint-popping sound. ?

very easy fix. 1. take of rim 2. take outer tie rod end off spindal then rack....be sure to mark the tie rod end the nut and the rack so you dont have to get it realigned. 3.cut off all old boot 4. put on new and put everthing back on

maybe you guys cant read
THAT BOOT DOES NOTHING!!
replacing it WONT fix your noises
wont make your car quieter when turning!
how do i know? i've removed and replaced the boot when changing tie rods
the boot is just a dust-keeper-outer. it does NOTHING to fix your creaking/moaning!

you use Power steering fluid in the pump? or ATF?
did you bleed your PS system yet?
SiNFuL

have not bled the PS system. Is PS liquid red by any chance? I'm leaking some liquid somewhere. Might be tranny fluid!!! Muchas problemas con mi coche!(many problems with my car!)

your SUPPOESD to use ATF for powersteering system (check FSM if you dont believe me)
if you didnt
drain it (pull a PS line and let it out) then refill it
to bleed jack up front of car (this is the easiest way)
and turn wheel full counter left then full counter right...30times or so
repeat as necessary

Only 16 and def. still learning so I really appreciate all your guys' help, especially dousan. what is ATF(I trust you that its the best)...is it expensive? ...and to bleed/drain the system I undo the PS hose, jack the car up, aim it over a pan(im guessing to prevent spillage), then get inside and turn the wheel left-right a lot to get all the air out of the system. Then redo the hose, and fill the system w/ ATF?

atf=automatic transmission fluid
(might even say in your owners manual about it--check the Power Steering section)
nah drain then put hose back
THEN refill and bleed.
