We're okay down here in Oki so far...predicting a 3 ft tsunami in the next few minutes. All the phone lines all over Japan has been intermittent due to the load. Everybody's trying to call everybody since 1530 local time. My Sq had a recall and they had to send a runner to house since I'm on leave today to get ahold of me.
Trying to convince the wife that it would be koo to grab dinner at Transit Cafe at the Seawall...:Ownedd: Off-base public bullhorn/announcement has been blaring for the last hour or so advising folks to find higher ground.
But holy shit, been watching videos on the JP news...Sendai was one of the first hit. All the vids you guys are seeing there of farmland being swept over, that was Sendai area. The freaking airport got cleaned off...
So far, we're hearing on ZY and Society Mike that Haneda and Narita shut down. They were diverting about 40 planes into Yokota AB West of Tokyo. Not sure how badly damaged the airports are if any, Chiba got some refinery fire going on, cant get any confirmation if Haneda got damaged since its on the damn water inside Tokyo Bay.

Okinawa isn't in the direct path of the tsunami.
So is Taiwan. Doubt anything is gonna happen to Hawaii, either. Last Tsunami warning that came down, we got 2 ft here in Okinawa and Hawaii got like 20cm.
I'm curious to know if they actually got the Tsunami Warning out to the areas that got affected, specially Sendai. From the videos we saw, I'm thinking not so effectively. I saw way too many folks getting balled over by water as they're trying to escape in their cars. Right now, they're confirming 19 people dead and hundreds missing. I wouldnt be surprised if the total goes over 500 people killed.

Well, its now bumped up to 8.8-8.9 earthquake at a depth of 24km (shallow as hell), 150 km from Sendai and this is now officially the strongest recorded earthquake to strike Japan. In retrospect, the this earthquake is rated 100x stronger than the Kobe earthquake. This earthquake is now #7 in intensity in recorded times.
They're saying now that the deathtoll is going to be high. It took the waves 15-20 mins from the time the earthquake happened to strike Sendai.
My heart goes out to anyone affected by the disaster. And supposedly cali is supposed to get hit with waves at 8am
I was in the loma prieta quake here in '89 and that shit was no joke and it was only a 6.9. I cant imagine the scale of destruction a quake that powerful is going to have on a area as populated at Tokyo.

Depends on where she's at in Hokkaido. If she's on the south-southeast of the island, then she faced the brunt of it.
But Jason's wife is in Misawa (further south of Hokkaido and closer to Sendai), if they're fine down there, figured Hokkaido would be okay too.

Well, PM me when you get news from your wife that power is back up down there. I got a couple folks that I can relay the info to.
One of my co-worker, who's deployed right now, his wife is from Misawa. We're still trying to get ahold of her down here to see if she needs anything. Fortunately, he's coming back on island tomorrow night from his deployment.
will do. I just emailed my wife. Still no power in Hachinohe and regular aftershocks

Theres a state of emergency at a nuclear power plant in Japan.
Yeah I just saw that, the cooling systems stopped working.
Fortunately most of the power plants went into safe mode during the quake.

Japan Police just reported 2-300 bodies after the water receeded on the north shore * off CNN
Official confirmed death toll so far is 90-100, most of the deaths they have are from the actual earthquake. The rescuers in Sendai finding bodies and they are estimating 200-300 bodies found so far. No official count yet but this is an estimate of bodies that are washing back into shore after the water receded out.
How strong is this earthquake? Tokyo is almost 400 kms away from the epicenter of the quake and it did this to Tokyo Tower...

just in case no one remembered, the one that hit haiti was a 7.0
on the richter scale, what earthquakes are measured by, each integer is increased 10 fold. So an 8.8/9 earthquake is about 20x stronger than a 7.0
Although Japan spends lots of research and development costs on Natural Disaster protection, this is pretty fucking bad.
The yen-value is supposed to have dropped, very slightly however (82 yen - 1 usd); the waves were speculated to hit california by tonight - however they probably won't be noticed

Yea dude, i was reading how much mike was putting up. But i finally got a hold of Kyoko and my son Yoshi. That was a shitty fuckin feeling, not being able to get a hold of them. Glad you dudes are Ok bro.

Oh and for people wondering why the Tsunami would be stronger on the Northern coast of California vs like Hawaii its a geographical thing. Geographically the Northern Coast of California is more of direct straight line with Sendai compared to Hawaii.
Put a map on the floor and trace a straight line from Sendai to both locations. I can pretty much bet the its shorter to the Northern California. This stuff travels outward in a ripple effect, the farther the ripple travels the less the effect.
ANd the fact that its atsunamyi not a rogue wave which mean it has an origination point, and it sends ripples out in every direction.
you can actually see the fear in this guys face at one point. People in earthquake country dont take the shit seriously at first. but as i watch more video you can see the gradual realization of how bad it actually was.

Ya and my birthday this year will be 11/11/11 oh shit coincidence. sheesh give me a freakin break. LOL
on that video note ya those people have balls of steel standing in that tower that way and looking out the window and such.
Of course when I was in the Loma Prieta quake in Berkeley I was watching the road do 4ft breakers in front the Japanese engine and transmission warehouse I was working at. Watched engines fly off shelves 2 to 3 stories up. It was pretty crazy.
So ya initially us folks that are used to Earthquakes tend to ride them out without fear. Except when they keep on going like in Japan.
I read 5:07 today is when Hawaii needs to be ready. Also Supermoon?
I dont think so, but everyone needs to be prepared regardless.
The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan early Friday were "completely unrelated" to the approaching "supermoon," despite a news report that tied the earthquake to the upcoming lunar event, according to U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist John Bellini.
The supermoon will occur on March 19, when the moon is at or near its point of closest orbit — lunar perigee — and is also full. As we explained in our previous coverage of the upcoming supermoon, seismologists have found no evidence to believe that lunar perigees heighten seismic activity.
The best evidence that this earthquake was not caused by a supermoon is that it happened now — exactly a week away from the date the moon will be full, and almost a week after it was new, the two times that the moon exerts its greatest pull on the planet.
A very small correlation exists between full or new moons and seismic activity, because the stronger-than-usual tidal forces caused by the alignment of the sun and moon puts added stress on tectonic plates.
But this quake happened with the sun and moon askew — the time when tidal forces are weakest. Putting aside the fact that the moon doesn't trigger massive earthquakes, blaming this quake on the supermoon is like trying to pin a house fire on an arsonist who is out of town at the time of the crime.
The Japanese earthquake thus points to the fact that astrology — an astrologer was the first to suggest the supermoon could be a threat — isn't a science. That this earthquake occurred a week before an astronomical event is mere coincidence. The vast majority of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and natural disasters do not follow the lunar cycle or tides. "This is something that builds up over hundreds of years," Bellini told Life's Little Mysteries.

if anything id say we're lucky that it didnt happen during the super moon.
if u think this is bad, could you image the chaos that would unfold if it happened during a super moon? this whole event is just so sad and scary as hell at the same time.
Especially for us san diegans. we've been waaaay over due for a big earthquake, and based on how reactive the plates have been the past couple years with these huge devastating earth quakes and all, i personally am not looking forward to it.

Prayers for all that have lost/or not heard from someone. All my fam and friends are accounted for... its been a crazy day... still no phones...
You guys got any damage down there in Yokosuka?
I still have not heard from one of my friends in Tokyo I believe he got stuck in his office. My other friends and close ones checked in with me early this morning. I was on Skype and Aim as well as Facebook with them till 2 in the morning. My friend Chris said there so many aftershocks of considerable size that they have just been shaking almost constantly and that's in Tokyo.
My heart and prayers go out to all affected.
I would not worry to much about this. We already have a team with cooling equipment and whatnot on the way to Japan in a Carrier. Saw it on the news this morning.
Oh and unsubstantiated fears are the biggest problem here. Just like the whole Oil thing. We have plenty of Oil right now and we have plenty of Gas. Fears are what is driving the prices up.
They've been getting aftershocks constantly up north. Minor tremors but still getting major aftershocks hitting 6.8s in the last 18 hrs. When I went to bed last night, they were reporting a total of 63 aftershocks in a span of 12 hours from when the earthquake struck.
you know someone is scared when they say "this is it, oh shit this is it!"
Everybody in Tokyo has been waiting for "The Big One." Alot of folks didnt really think much of it when the earthquake first struck. But then it got stronger and stronger. Most of the time, you get a tremor that last roughly 15-20 seconds. This one lasted well over a minute and was strong enough to knock folks off their feet while standing up, on the ground floor. Imagine it now if you were up on the 20th floor or higher. I personally, would have shitted myself after.
Yeah 13,000 people were stranded there yesterday, not able to leave! And 10,000 more at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, crazy stuff going on.
I'm surprised Haneda didnt get fucked up considering its on the water. Guess the way Tokyo Bay is shaped, the tsunami didnt really do much damage. Now imagine if the waves are heading north, right into the mouth of the bay, instead of it heading south...destruction would be freaking epic.
Anyways, they're having issues with the Fukishima Reactor. Guess when the earthquake happened, the reactor went into safe mode and shut down. The generators turned on for back up power to cool down the reactor. The tsunami struck the reactor and fucked up the generators so they have no power to cool down the reactor. They've managed to get battery power but they only had 8 hrs of life on them. Guess they got radioactive steam leaking into the facility and are reporting 1000x the normal amount of radioactivity. Basically, when they run out of power, they would have no way to circulate the coolant to cool down the reactor. The reactor takes atleast 2 days to fully cool down...If they cant circulate the coolant, they will burn off and steam up, could potentially blow up and welcome to Chernobyl all over again.
NHK is now reporting 427 confirmed dead and 740 missing...they have a ferry ship that had 100 people in it missing in open water. The waves has gotten as far as 10 kms inland in some areas.

so what does a nuclear meltdown actually mean? what happens? just a big explosion?
Let me google that for you (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=nuclear+meltdown)
first result.
A meltdown occurs when a severe failure of a nuclear power plant system prevents proper cooling of the reactor core, to the extent that the nuclear fuel assemblies overheat and melt. A meltdown is considered very serious because of the potential that radioactive materials could be released into the environment. A core meltdown will also render the reactor unusable until and unless it is repaired. The scrapping and disposal of the reactor core will incur substantial costs for the operator.
Two meltdowns occurred at American civil nuclear power plants. The partial meltdown at the Fermi 1 experimental fast breeder reactor required the reactor to be repaired, though it never achieved full operation afterward. The Three Mile Island accident led to the permanent shutdown of that reactor. Both meltdowns, though dramatic incidents, did not lead to any deaths or serious injuries; no deaths or serious injuries have ever been attributed to radiation from a Western civil nuclear power plant.
Within the former Soviet Union several nuclear meltdowns of differing severity have occurred. In the most serious example, the Chernobyl disaster, design flaws and operator negligence led to a power excursion that subsequently caused a meltdown. According to a report released by the Chernobyl Forum (consisting of numerous United Nations agencies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Health Organization; the World Bank; and the Governments of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia) the disaster killed twenty-eight persons due to acute radiation syndrome,[3] could possibly result in up to four thousand fatal cancers at an unknown time in the future[4] and required a Zone of Alienation around the reactor. The Chernobyl plant did not have a containment building as found on Western commercial reactor designs.

its when the nuclear core over heats and it causes a meltdown with leaks massive amounts of radiation into the environment
