View Full Version : Question about SCV, Cams, S14 MAF, intake, and int. mani on S13

First off, I drive a 93' S13 coupe and I am swapping a 95' KA into my car.

1. Can someone post a picture on a car of what the SCV (controls secondary butterflies on intake manifold in 91-early 93)looks like? I don't think my car has this and it has led me to believe that I don't have the hotter cams, so then there would be no point in me pulling my S13 cams out and putting them into the 95' KA. If it somehow turns out that I do have an SCV, couldn't I just use the intake manifold from the S14 because it is OBD1? I read somewhere that some guy was going to try it but it was an old post and i didn't feel like reviving it.

2. The S14 MAF is larger on the 95' so I've read. Does it wire up correctly to an S13? Would it make my car run rich or lean and is there a relatively cheap way I could correct this? I read on FA or here and someone said it works fine but another guy couldn't get it to work? Any updates on this? And I know using an AFC uses the same MAF values for an S13 and S14 KA so why wouldn't it work.

3. Will the piping on an Injen Intake for an S14 fit on an S13 if I can get the S14 MAF to work?

I don't know too much about this stuff so any help or corrections to my ramblings will help. Thanks.

I’m using the S14 maf, but I’m not sure what I’m going to be doing about it yet. I only tried it now because I got it for a good deal and wanted to know if it would work. I am not ready for turbo yet and actually am planning to swap another engine in soon. But the S14 will work you just need to be able to play with some stuff, probably stuff and S-AFC would take care of. For some reason my car has been running pretty rich, and I’m getting an injector leak code, which is a California only thing, but my car isn't a cali car, so that’s been bothering me. The thing about it running rich doesn’t make any sense because the engine should be getting more air and from the maf voltage readings I took it looks like it’s reading the same as it should’ve been when the S13 maf was on the car, so that’s a little confusing to me.

I’m hoping to do more testing once I get the new engine in (another KA) and probably get an s-afc or at least a techtom or something to be able to see how different things are acting when I’m driving the car. Oh and that’s when I’ll try to hack it with 370s, I just need a baseline for the s14 maf on the s13 maf so I can try and calculate how big the pipe needs to be. Hopefully all this will happen soon, but who knows.

Basically though, I guess I can’t really tell you much other than the s14 maf worked fine on my car, just in the sense that the car still runs and there aren’t any real major issues. The other guy that tried putting one on his car was having trouble with it, but I don’t know how things are going right now with him. But it should work, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work, it just might take some tuning and a little more playing with than the hacked maf on an s14.

This was my recent response to an email sent to me about using the S14 maf on an S13. It's more for the purpose of using a hacked maf with a KA-T, than putting it on just because it's a little bigger.

Basically, I haven't done enough testing to find out if it works right and it's something else that's wrong with my car, or if the s14 maf just won't work perfectly with the s13. So try it if you want, in theory it should work right, it should actually make your car run lean if the voltage v. airflow curves for the s13 and s14 match up, which is something I really haven't been able to find a definitive answer to.

Is it OK to be running a little lean all the time or should I just use the S13 MAF and custom mate the intake to it? The whole reason I bought this engine is so that I can meet tech inspections because the motor I have now leaks like a mofo. If I take it to the track, is running a little lean gonna cause serious problems or am I just going to lose a little power? TTT for all the people checking zilvia at work on monday. Thanks guys.
