So in Japan, people either bow in their car (and nearly clock their wheel) or more commonly, put on their hazards to say "Cheers mate!" when someone lets them in etc.
After driving in Japan for yonks - I don't think I'll ever break the hazard lights thing (I also bow when on the phone... But that's just embarrassing).
So - how do you blokes say thanks???

put your hand out the window pointing up in the air real quick.
hazard thing works too...unless guy drives a civic..then he thinks you're going to race him.

Flashing your lights in Japan = Dozo (go ahead). Important lesson to learn if you're used to driving motorbikes in Oz and it means "I'm coming past you at an extreme rate of knots. Please don't be a co$k!". Oops.
As I smoke, my window is usually down and it's easier to give a wave. Most people in JDM land don't get it though.
Contrary to most countries, I love truck drivers here. It's the old bints in Kei cars that kill me. And people don't understand that high beams to a car doing something stupid means "you're a douche!" here.
My last 2 months it's been my personal mission to educate drivers that slowing to 5kp/h BEFORE indicating is bad...

I know, but if you flash only once people should be able to figure out what it means. Most of all, they've done a favor for someone.

I guess now I know why idiots always give me the high beams. Whatever, flash them all you want, morons...you still suck at driving. Sometimes I'll blip the hazards back at them just for the :keke:

- If somebody lets me Squeeze into a lane, i will put the hand up towards my rear view mirror, or out the window.
- If im going to let somebody in i try and give them a hand signal, or flash the beams at them.
Its a small thing but it keeps the roads happier, most people where you clearly give them the gesture that they can merge in but then they dont even give you the slightest 'thanks' is rude.
Never seen hazards used in AUS as a thank-you.

the flashers are cool..the public transit drivers in toronto blip the hazards on to say thanks for letting me in and not being a douche about it..i never thought to try it my self, i always do the hand towards the rear view mirror sign though..
so for me..
day time = hand gesture
and night time = blipping the hazards
