I just bought a Starfire Blue 97 last night, and it came with a Pioneer Premier headunit. it worked fine, but it was a bit dated, so i decided to replace it with a JVC KD-R300 that I had laying around. I wired it up, tested it, and it worked. I then realized i had no electrical tape. I left to buy electrical tape. Returned, fuse was blown, headunit not working obviously. Returned with a new fuse, put it in the fusebox, tested the headunit. NOT WORKING?!?!?! I've tried re-wiring it many times, it will not turn on. PLEASE HELP :smash:

When you test the head unit is it bolted down? I recently found out with my 97 that the factory harness does not have a ground wire. The head unit must be screwed into place to ground the unit to the car. I wasted about 2 hours hunting for blown fuses.

It isnt bolted down, its screwed into the trim piece but out of the dash. I was grounding it to the harness, because theres a ground wire there. so i should put it all in and see what happens?

As the car radio only need +12v to operate....so, the best thing to do now is to be sure that the supply voltage is really at least +12V (normally 12-14.1V).....
Check with volt-meter that your supply voltage is really +12v....this is the best thing to check as sometimes you "think" your ground wire is already grounded.....You'd better off using a volte-meter to see at least +12V on your supply voltage......

There is no ground in the stock harness. Ground it to the chassis.

I already tried to tell him that. Apparetently he doesn't want to try it.

I didn't get that out of your reply, sorry. I figured what you were saying is that the ground wont work for some reason until the Headunit is back in the proper position (dumb, i know). SO: I need to ground it to the car? Just saying, the Pioneer Premier i pulled out was grounded to the harness adapter. I'll try grounding it to the car in the morning. :newbie:

just as you said, needed to be grounded to the chassis. grounded it to the metal brackets right behind.

Well, glad I could help. Like i said, I spent a minimum of 2 hours chasing fuses and such thinging my headunit was trash before I stumbled onto this little tid bit.
Nice pick up on the Kouki!

Yeah, I just finished painting mine BMW Interlargos blue, but some of my paint didn't lay down right. I'm seriously thinking about just spraying it the starfire when I put it back in the booth.
