alright guys this isn't another "how to skip ps with belt tensioner, etc, etc." thread. recently on my s14a i removed the unit and inspected internals. there's the obvious back cap held on by 4 bolts, the circular cylinder that forms an oval in the middle and the middle rotary piece with the 10 fins on it. i decided, what the ****, why not remove the internals. it worked fine, but ****ing god our steering is nowhere near like a honda, where its hybrid ps/no ps, its straightup ps required. so here comes another idea, only put in 5 of the 10 fins skipping one hole so as to keep the balance. steering is insanely badass, you can tell when you have/dont have control and can still get the wheel around relatively fast, its the very best of both worlds. however, past 4k rpm i can start to hear a loudass ticking from the pump. the belt is not slipping, my valves are not that loud, its a recognizable sound. but what in the **** could be wrong? could it be the sound of the fluid sloshing around in there like a jack russel ****ing terrior or what? i refuse to give up this perfect mixture of steering i've found. the fluid isn't low, my r/p isn't ****ed up, i just need some troubleshooting ideas from you guys if thats cool.

This is not an answer, rather just more interaction..
Old_S13 took all his power steering off and likes it. If it is close to as stiff as it is with the car off and power steering on (pressure of fliud) it would not be for me. However, if you remove and plug the hoses, and consult with Old_S13, perhaps we can find an answer to if:
A. How stiff is his set-up while parallel parking?
B. Is their no tightness (lack of boost as if fluid is low)
C. Are you talking about removing vanes in the PS pump? (I have an S-13, not looked at S14)
D. Exactly, are your hoses and fluid still in the loop as factory, or do you have it modded?
E. Revert back to A.
OLD-S13 is delighted at his method of P/S removal...and I think I would be as well. You definitly should have a much easier super low speed steering than trying to push a fluid coupled system around at low speed. The problem I have is I have a leak. Once the fluid gets low, the emergency manouvering of the car is downright dangerous. HElp old mighty one of 25 years to come in here and tell us how your steering feels and what you did to the rack , like plugging it up...etc..
 :D :p

I modified nothing but the internals of the pump as my belt is crank/water pump/ps (tensioner) so the pump cannot be removed. i had the internals completely gutted for 2 weeks (the pump pushed no fluid what-so-ever) and didn't prefer it as i physically could not get the wheel around fast enough to initiate a drift. i really really like this half and half, its the perfect mixture and i don't wanna lose it.

Coll, worthy of others to experiment with!

from the sounds of it, i'm the only one dumb enough to even touch the internals of this pump ;)

Hmmm... sounds interesting. I'll have to open up my spare p/s pump and check her out when I get some spare time. Why exactly do you prefer the 5 fin to the 10 fin? Most people get rid of PS to lose weight and free up a few horse, but in this case I can't see much of a gain in either weight loss or power gain. Were you looking for a stiffer feel, if that's the case I would have just gotten a smaller diameter steering wheel?

whenever i find myself really hauling ass in a corner, i worry that i won't notice when/if the front wheels have or haven't lost control and have full countersteer going. when the wheels do catch my car flips back and it always scares the **** outta me. now, i can tell when they have or haven't lost control and can judge my countersteer. smaller wheel is also on its way, trying to find a kit to fit a domestic style 3spoke grant onto the s14, i love the way they look and my friends is really comfortable and simple for a $29 wheel.
