Yo! havent seen this on here yet. A thread where we can talk about pick ups.
Im new at this, had low cars all my life so going with a truck would be a break.
Im really itching to get a toyota 4x4 pick up, favor towards 80s *back to the future * truck, or even early 90s.

I may recieve my dad's 99 blazer ls 4door 2wd. Currently not running, perhaps fuel problem.. Im hoping to fix it up and sell or trade it for a toyota 4x4.
I would like to find one thats already lifted so its good to go.. Seen some on craigslist.
Don't think im too interested in the prerunner/desert runner setups. I just want to be able to drive over everything.
Seems like 85 is the sweat year to go with for the old toyotas, last year solid front axle and first year fuel injections. I suppose sas could be done to any 4x4 but that is work to do.
First gen 4runners look pretty tough too.

Toyota 4x4's are the shit. the family has a land cruiser and that thing pulls like a freight train.. when its in low 4 the toque is amazing it feels like nothing can stop it. I love toyotas for trucks. good luck

Honestly, I'd stay away from 1980s Toyota pickups or 4Runners. They're getting old.
And they're really, really dangerous. Those were before any kind of light truck crash safety regulations. If you get in even a minor accident by today's standards, you're gonna get fucked up.
No crumple zones, no side impact beams, no airbag, light as hell; seems dumb to sink money into a 30 year old death trap. I think the only safety features are a collapsible steering column and seat belts. Hah.
The "sweet spot" right now, imo, is the FZJ80. Specifically, the 95-97 models that had the 1FZ, airbags, and optional factory locking differentials. The 94s are the same except for no airbag. Older FJ80s have an older engine, which is a turd. FZJ80s also have a pretty decent towing capacity, leather seats, etc. that make them a more practical vehicle than an 80s pickup.
They can wheel too. They were actually the last solid axle Toyota sold in the US. And they're coil sprung so they don't ride like a tractor.
I guess if you want a weekend toy, an 80s pickup might be OK. But something like an FZJ80 can be a DD, light duty tow rig, and four wheeler all at the same time. Kinda hard to beat that.
My brother has an 84 Land Cruiser we go wheeling in sometimes. I like it, but out of all the Toyotas I see out there, nothing beats an FZJ80. The pickups are tin cans, FJ Cruisers are all financed wussies, and 4Runners are just awkward.

I would get the 90's Toyota pickup with a IFS and do a full size axle swap to it. You could just get the kit to swap in the 80's year solid axle. But I think a little yota with a dana 60 and 14bFF would be awesome.
This was my 4 wheeling rig for a few years. If I get back into it I am looking at a wrangler, yota, or a samuri.

Are you wanting to "build" something? An FZJ80 with a bolt-on lift and good tires will do pretty much anything, comfortably. They're already solid axle front and rear and some of them came from the factory with electric locking diffs. You don't really need to build them up much to have fun.
This is how I'd roll an 80.

Bam, done. Srsly. Though I'd opt for rock sliders instead of running boards. Maybe $9000 total or so to buy a stock one, clean it up, and lift it.
I guess if you want a toy that doesn't have any kind of creature comforts, or more of a project, you could get an older Cruiser or minitruck. Cruiser guys mostly just fix and restore their trucks. Not too much heavy modification going since the Cruiser suspensions are already pretty decent. Nothing ridiculous like converting to propane and back-halfing and all the stuff the minitruck guys do.
And honestly, I've never, ever been blown away by any 4x4. Not like some cars. Truck mentality is just a little different.

The FZJ80 is my favorite of all FJ chassis. First mod though I would do is rip out the stock engine and put in a ramjet 350. Best mod IMHO in those years unless turbo diesel.

Even if it is a little better than another 25 year old car, it's still absolutely terrible by today's standards.
Some people care about things like this, some don't. I know if I ever get a second car I'm going to buy something newer than my S13. Going even older just doesn't make much sense... really from any angle you look at it.
Other than love, I guess. :)
Of course, if you don't drive it much you're less likely to crash it. So you just have to figure out how much you'll be using this thing. If you drive it once or a couple times a month or whatever, it's probably OK. At the point you're driving it everyday you're getting into the zone where you should really consider something safer.
I actually read a paper on model year versus crash safety recently. I got bored halfway through the paper and skipped to the end, but basically, the more you drive the car, the newer it should be. Model Ts pretty much never get driven. 2010 Honda Accords get driven a lot. Where does what you're buying fit in? It may make sense to buy the older Toyota. It all depends on how you plan to use it.

although the 3fe engine from the 91-92 FJ80 is a slow TURD. It does have the benefits of reliability. The motor and timing is all gear driven (ie no chains or belts to wear). It does have the heater hose problems as the 93-97 1 series motors have and the transmission is suppose to be out of a mini bus or something like that.
Which has lead me to my decision of rig and currently undergoing new fabrifcation with custom rock sliders, rear bumper with swing out and front bumper with winch and a rear locking lunchbox diff.
rocking 3inch OME lift with 33 BFG.
the FJ80 and FZJ80 all come with solid axels. The toyota uses a Birfield drive to drive the front. Stronger than your normal CV style. Although rebuilding the birfiled is kind of a mission (something i will be doing in the near future) The axels are known to wheel 37 with no problem. But companies make chromoly axels and birfields.
axels on the 91-92 are semi floating while the 93 and up are full floating. And having the later model optional locking front and rear differential is a plus.
The factory 4 link in the rear is amazing. The front has binding issues but something tells me toyota designed that for the front to be the controlling the pitch of the vehicle while making the rear do all the grabbing.
Gas mileage sucks on both trucks i wish i had a diesel swap
and with that said suck it !

I really like the new calvary blue available in 2011 models.
I've only ever been disappointed once offroad, and I can blame that on still having highway tires. Got stuck in a little mud puddle. Otherwise its completely stock, and its great for going out and exploring. Its also great as something to sit in for 2 hours every day.

240SXs actually got better crash ratings than similar year Toyota pickups. Granted, they're in a different weight category, so you can't directly compare the ratings, but when NHTSA says "poor" for a Toyota light truck and "acceptable" for a tin can S13 I'm gonna say I'd rather be in the tin can. S14s are even safer. (However, Tacomas, which Toyota started in '95, were much improved over the Hiluxes, as far as safety goes.)
I'm not saying don't buy one. Think about what you want out of this new vehicle you're willing to plop money down on, and decide where you want to compromise. Like wearing a helmet on a motorcycle, you ultimately have to make the decision.
I see a newer car as a win-win, you get a car with hopefully less wear and tear, and it's safer as well. And if it's around 15 years old you don't pay the "it's cool because it's old tax" aka Back to the Future tax for those Toyotas. So you get more value for money.
And yes, I'm talking about crash safety on a 240SX forum. I figure everyone here doesn't want to get dead.
I will say, it's funny to see FJ Cruisers out and about next to the older Toyotas. I think the FJs got really, really good crash safety ratings. And you can tell because they somehow manage to be bigger on the outside and smaller on the inside than any of the old Toyotas. Haha.
FZJ80 with factory lockers is the sweet spot right now, in terms of value. For something you can actually drive on the road and go wheeling in.

My whole family has been into lifted trucks, All of them are Ford's though. I used to have a 1993 Chevy stepside with a sbc that had a little bit of work done to it, some differant shocks and tires truck was fun. but sucked on gas, i have been looking into getting a truck/suv to tow the 240sx around with but want something to have fun with, might look up those FZJ80

I never said F(Z)J80s were unsafe.
Though they only did airbags on them from 1995 on. And lockers were only from '94 on. So I'd just get a 95+ if I bought one.
