I AM PISSED
and this is why:
I swapped the dashes in my 240s last week, and had to E-Check it today for my plates, and the commie bastards there told me that I had to go to the State Highway Patrol because the vins are switched. So I call the SHP, and the Officer Dangle proceeds to tell me that I've committed several FELONIES, becasuse I switched the dashes. Apparently that's illegal?!
So anyway, I need a solution, ASAP, like getting collector plates for my sr20. Anyone have any ideas? Is the 240 in the Collector's car guide? HELP!

OH **** !!
Switch the VIN of the dash onto the other dash .. oh boy .. to late for that
good one :hammer:
SO now you have to take your car to SHP with an SR in it ?
I'm in a similar situation, I have to take my car to CHP (for a different reason) and have an SR, so I'm switching shells. :)
Why did you swap them?? Can you swap them back in easy?

Switch the VINs over and tell them they made a typo last time.

Well Jenne, do you have your old dash still??? If you do take the new one out, as pain in the ass as it may be, and get a rivet gun and swap them...but yeah changing vins on cars is VERY Illegal.....even if it is just a dash...your lucky they didnt impound your car...they could have said it might have been stolen and taken it from ya. Count yourself lucky... :hammer:

This is your punishment for not coming to the Chicago meet
Seriously though, do you have your old dash still? I'm pretty sure you can move the vin from one dash to the other.

To be perfectly honest, it didn’t occur to me at the time that the dash was not legal to swap. I own both cars, can show title to both cars, and can’t conceive why in the HELL I can’t swap parts on them if I chose to. I work in law, and it still doesn’t make a lick of sense to me.
I wouldn’t even be as pissed as I am if f*cktards at e-check hadn’t given me misinformation not once, but TWICE! And the SHP guy was a jerk about it too. He even understood that I was fixing up the car, but I guess when I bought it, the salvage title went away and at that point it was unlawful to continue changing parts out. But what if a mechanic changes your dash? Is that a felony too? I’m talking to my lawyers about this.
I could have it re-riveted, but that would require the destruction of the other vin plate, and I want them both. The rivets used in the process are special order from the government, and only certain people can have them – I have a friend who has the gun and rivets, and he said he would do it, but I have to pull my windshield.
I am going to re-swap the f*ckin things this weekend.
And about the meet in Chicago, I am truly sorry for missing it. My boyfriend and I broke up over the weekend, and I didn’t really feel like doing anything. I promise to come to the one in October, by myself, and happily.
Thanks for listening to my rant.

what you need to do is swap the old dash back in, and show the shp and whoever else. Tell them that you didnt realize ur mistake and you wanted to fix it ahead of time...NO QUESTIONS ASKED, hopefully. Then after everything is done and you've dealt with all the legal stuff, swap the vin plates while both dashes are out of the vehicles,(so you dont have to remove the winsheild) and move on with life with a nice dash in ur sr powered s13.
Have Fun! good luck!

Ahhh... if only you were right.. Special order rivets? Destruction of a VIN plate?.. Uhmm NO.
I replaced the brown dash from Lisa's 240 with the black dash from Mark & Irena's Jalopy. I removed both VINs and put the old vin on the new dash (the black one). Neither VIN was destroyed (or even damaged for that matter), and I used some Arrow rivets to secure it to the dash. I don't know the size offhand, but i can find out later.
I work in law, and it still doesn’t make a lick of sense to me.
It doesn't make sense to you that a Vehicle Identification Number should match the vehicle it's on? That a plain-view chassis ID number should match the chassis?
but I have to pull my windshield.
No. No. NO. That is 10x the pain in the ass pulling your dash would be. TRUST me. Just bite the bullet, pull the dash and swap the VIN.
Anyway. I'll post some pics of the actual VIN I swapped and a non-messed-with VIN plate.
Tell me what you think is which.
I'll tell you if you're right

As pleased as I am to be taking an oral lashing from you, friend, I really have to disagree - I might not be right, but chances are that the chanels I had to wade in the midst of this bureaucracy bullsh*t, having all said the same thing, probably are. What I'm quoting is what the dip**** cop told me when I spoke to him (for nearly 30 mins) about my situation. The rivet guy AND the 5-0 both said the same thing about the rivets, and the cop went even further to say that I would be in REAL trouble if he saw that they weren't the right rivets. It could be that he was talking about himself in particular, since there is only one inspection SHP office in Summit Co. Also, the rivet guy said I'd have to "pull the windshield myself," which more than likely means that IS a step in the process. So all of these things, while regurgitated, must be at least 50% right for the simple fact that most of the idiots involved opine similarly on them.
But all of that is neither here nor there. I appreciate the photos and the information that you have given me, despite the fact that I stated I was "ranting", and had already reached a decision about what to do, I just didn't really look forward to it. I am NOT excited about pulling those f*ckin dashes again, but I guess I should have re-read the ORC before I pulled them in the first place. It really saved my ass the day I decied to rob a bank.
(that last part was a joke)
PS. I am not one of the stupid, classless, clueless riceboys that post on here, so kindly refrain from treating me as such. Thank you.

i gotta vote for the first vin number to be most likely tampered with because around the inside of the screws it looks like the paint is scratched off.
well thats my best guess
so with my vote im really curious which vin did you tamper with?

See I don't know why he would be mad about you putting your cars original vin # on your new dash! Just say your old dash was warping and the "leather" (heh heh) was faded! He shouldn't complain if the vin # fits your cars registration. And NO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PULL THE WINDSHIELD!!!!!

*Edit* Ok Jenne, I am not gonna be a bitch...but in all honesty, the things you have posted, at least to me and a few others, are not coinciding. If you are in the legal field...you would know that the vins are never to be changed...and yes a mechanic can change a dash, but he will also put a vin plate on the new dash and it is documented through vehicle service records. Typically only a dealer, and very rare cases a body shop, will change out dashes...not your average Joe mechanic. Kevin was just trying to help you better understand what is common knowledge about vehicle vin swapping, it was not meant to be a verbal lashing...as you put it. Take it for what you will, and hopefully next time you wont have half these problems. Please, like I said at the beginning, don't take this as me being a bitch...Just trying to help you out.

Lol j/p, anyways there is the possibilities that she does the modeling thing for fun, I mean entering stuff at car shows isnt a full time job, and neither is taking a few pics here and there. I mean I gots a camera and tripod, I can trick out my basement and take some pics for a few minutes of the girls time, and then the rest is on me the photographer.
But I guess I don't know her whole story. We all make our mistakes, swapping VINs inst legal, I am sure there are others that are learning this now, but basically you have to think of it from a thiefs perspective.
You steal a car and swap the vin plates from a beater you buy, cops who don't know **** about cars wont know the diff. Thats why they are bieng all bitchy about it. Just swap em back, these are the sacrifices you have to make with engine swaps.
Hope everything (even further than the car, you know what I mean) works out for you.

Why would you call me a tool? What did I do to deserve an insult from you?
Anyway, I didn't ban him or delete his account.
Well not his main account. After he came back again as 'bannedAGAIN' i banned that account.
Anyway, why should we let James back? He doesn't respect the forum, much less it's rules and guidelines. I couldn't care less that he doesn't respect the moderators other than the fact that he frequently acted in an immature manner and wouldn't do what we asked.
As much as he or anyone else may believe it, I don't have a vendetta against him or anyone. I'm not power-mad or self-righteous.
If any of that were true, I'd have banned alot more people, and for no good reason. The plain as simple facts are this:
I'm an asshole in Zilvia (in moderator mode, anyway). I have a low tolerance for BS or flames, etc. I'm a nice guy in real life.
My opinion of James (and I'm pretty sure I've told him this a time or two before, so i'm not talking about him 'behind his back' as it were) is that he's intelligent, but immature. What kind of person re-registers to be on a forum he's CLEARLY not wanted at? ...and not simply once or twice, but close to TEN TIMES!
I'm nobody to pass judgment on anybody, but I am free to have my opinions.
Anyway, back to the VIN swapping mania. Sorry to everyone else for the OT interlude.

I meant it jokingly not as an insult. My point here is that people seem to take things too seriously and personally on this forum. Just look at this thread as an example.
And for some reason the people who seem to have the shortest fuse, and are the quickest to jump on people all live on the west coast. Not trying to insult anyone, just making an observation from my point of view.

I bumped this thread because I'm going to eventually swap the dash in my S14. The only time someone actually looks at that VIN is when I go for a safety inspection. I would just swap out the dashboards and swap VINs at the same timeframe, that's what I plan to do.
But what kind of rivets do I use? and how do I get that plate off?
Bill Roberts
09-28-2003, 06:56 PM
You drill the rivets out with a believe a 3/32ths bit and variable speed drill. As for new rivets, just get the arrow rivets (hancock fabrics, clothing supply and rivet gun) and do it.
Hell no problem if you own BOTH vins.

there was a zilvia aim chat room that we used to do every night for like a couple weeks, then it died, then it was brought back a few more times, and kept dieing.

A chat link in the site would work. No one there, just Pm for a chat.

no....it hasn't been discussed on the 200SX...
you forget Germany (like some European countries) have LHD cars.
having LHD cars + Nissan + RWD + SR20DET + S14 = German 200SX
German 200SX = U.S. 240SX (in looks)
German 200SX > U.S. 240SX (in options)
German 200SX > U.S. 240SX (in performance...STOCK)
Getting away with a German 200SX on the U.S. roads = priceless
:D
Anyways...this was just a thought....since its more EXPENSIVE to import a car from Europe (I think).
